Chapter Ninety-Six: The Workshop

Li Si did not immediately respond to Chen Jing's statement. She frowned and said, "These human-faced worms on the ground look like caterpillars. If we assume that the angel is their final form, that is, a butterfly, then there should be a cocoon form in the middle."

"I was wondering where the cocoon form went..."

“You mean,” He Lili said, “that the face worm, the cocoon person, the angel, is a continuous process of change.”

"A guess," Li Si said. "Someone of you could dissect these face-like insects and see if they have wing structures inside their bodies, or glands that spray out silk threads."

Dao Nan nodded, picked up his long knife, and slashed open a maggot corpse. No blood splattered, only some white tissue fluid seeped out.

After a moment, he said, "I didn't see any wing structure. As for the glands, I don't know; they're hard to identify."

Chen Jing suppressed his nausea and examined the shriveled corpse of a maggot.

The worm felt dry to the touch, not slippery as I had initially imagined. It was significantly lighter than a person.

Each worm has a thin white tube attached to its back, pointing towards other worms in the ground.

“Speaking of which…” He Lili walked to the front of the angel’s corpse, where a bronze basin had been placed, but was now empty: “I remember in the mural, the angel was crying, and then tears fell into the basin, right?”

"Do you think it will be Angel's Tears?" Li Si asked.

"Angel's Tears?" Dao Nan asked. "What's that?"

He Lili explained, "It is a kind of magical material that has only appeared in some ancient books. We don't know the specifics, but many records mention that certain magical spells use it."

“Evil, depravity, and the prayer for destruction. The purpose of Angel's Tears.” Li Si said, “However, I don’t know if this is the ritual for creating Angel's Tears. This is the first time I’ve seen something that turns a person into an angel, and it’s not recorded in ancient books.”

Chen Jing asked, "Are there really angels in the rumors?"

In Chen Jing's memory, angels were a product of the West before he traveled through time.

He Lili said, "Yes. The word 'angel' itself means the messenger of heaven. All angels are inseparable from feathered dragons. In legends, feathered dragons sometimes appear in human form. At that time, what appears is often a tall, handsome, powerful angel with wings on its back."

"Does 'Angel's Tears' have hallucinogenic effects?" Chen Jing looked at Li Si: "Could it be that Mei Moke ingested Angel's Tears and became like that?"

Li Si said, "Perhaps it's not hallucinations, but parasites."

"There are flames flowing in the blood... Doesn't that sound like worms crawling into your veins? And the sound of the ocean, doesn't it sound like the echo of worms gnawing at your brain?"

These words made both He Lili and Zhang Taoying tremble.

A chill ran down Chen Jing's spine... The thought that this was indeed possible sent shivers down his spine.

“I feel unwell, uncomfortable.” Li Ai frowned as she spelled out the words.

“…Let’s continue exploring.” He Lili said, walking to the second door on the left. “There’s no malice inside.”

Li Ai nodded and stepped forward to open the door with her immense strength.

Although they didn't sense any malice, everyone remained vigilant, and Chen Jing and Dao Nan both drew their swords.

Inside the door were piles of maggot-infested corpses, but there were no cicada pupa-like creatures like the ones Mei Moke had seen before.

The group breathed a slight sigh of relief, but remained vigilant as they went inside.

"Search this place," Li Si said, as the will-o'-the-wisps floating beside her coalesced into a human form and went inside to provide light.

With their hands clasped together, the group inspected the area. Chen Jing spotted some flashes of light where a maggot-infested body had collapsed.

Chen Jing carefully moved the corpse and saw a piece of light silver armor with symbols of an anvil, flames, and a longbow on it, as well as a silver, technologically advanced rifle that was not an ordinary object.

"I don't recognize this." Dao Nan looked at the gun Chen Jing had brought over: "This is a model I don't recognize."

This is quite rare... Chen Jing looked at the two ladies.

“This feeling is awful… Don’t let that gun get near me,” Li Ai said, frowning.

Ugh... Is this the gun? Chen Jing looked at the silver rifle.

“The combination of flame and bow should symbolize the heavens. In ancient times, people who believed in the heavens preferred to use bows as ranged weapons,” He Lili said. “Flame also has the meaning of heavenly fire. We can conclude that this symbol is related to the heavens.”

"This cutting board reminds me of an organization called the Workshop."

A workshop? Chen Jing's spirits lifted.

He remembered the diary he had read before, which also mentioned the existence of the workshop.

"The workshop can be traced back to the Heavenly Dao Sect's pursuit of the Demon Transformation Disease in 914. The Demon Transformation Disease is a disease that spreads through blood..." He Lili glanced at Li Aidan: "The symptoms of the disease are very similar to her ability... Her hands and body turn into a monster-like beast form, but this only happens at night when she absorbs moonlight. Otherwise, she looks exactly like an ordinary person and is difficult to distinguish."

This sounds a bit like a werewolf, turning into a monster to attack others during a full moon... Chen Jing remembered what the expert had once said.

"Blood Realm cultivators can exploit the fear, cowardice, and suspicion of others to form alliances and manipulate them skillfully. They can also transform into a kind of bloodthirsty beast, such as being covered in fur and growing sharp claws and fangs."

Chen Jing immediately asked, "Wait a minute, what is the connection between this demonic transformation disease and the Qi of Words?"
