Dao Nan decided to defend the spot and guard against any other unexpected events. He pointed to the sleeping people and then to the light opposite, indicating to Chen Jing and Li Ai whether they wanted to wake up the others.
Chen Jing nodded and took the lead in climbing towards the window railing, nimbly scaling the "steps" made of stone slabs.
When Dao Nan came to explore this time, he was wearing heavy armor that he had made himself, which made it difficult to move silently. He said in a low voice, "Sorry, be careful."
Li Ai followed Chen Jing forward. When they passed Zhang Taoying's spot, the girl snored contentedly, seemingly having a sweet dream.
She followed Chen Jing's example and climbed upwards, one step after another. When she reached the last "step," she accidentally kicked a piece of gravel off.
In such an extremely quiet environment, the sound of the gravel was very clear, which made Li Ai's heart jump, and she didn't even have time to observe the scene inside the window.
At this distance, she finally heard the sounds coming from inside: painful groans and the sounds of branding irons and barbed whips striking people's bodies. The sounds grew louder and clearer.
She quickly looked inside the window frame. Thankfully, nothing had changed; the inside seemed normal... except for the faint light. Wait a minute!
A jailer stood there with his back to the restored window bars.
However, he looked very much like, very much like the zombie that had stood up and attacked them before! At his feet, the helmet that Li Si had left there earlier was still lying there.
Only then did Li Ai, who was not quite clear about the situation, look at Chen Jing, who had been subconsciously ignored before.
Chen Jing made a shushing gesture with his finger, then pointed it down, waved his palm in front of his nose, and then pressed his palm down.
This is a set of sign language that is very commonly used among hunters.
Li Ai didn't understand what it meant at all, so he remained still and watched helplessly.
Chen Jing had no choice but to climb down quietly, trying not to make a sound, while waving to Aidan and pointing down.
Seeing this, Li Ai finally understood and followed suit, climbing down the slope.
Chen Jing and Li Ai retreated to the vicinity of the obelisk. Dao Nan asked in a low voice, "How is it?"
Chen Jing took a deep breath and told them what he had seen earlier.
"The jailer had no wounds."
Li Ai nodded, indicating that she hadn't noticed any wounds either.
Chen Jing glanced at her, then said, "It's not standing on the ground."
"It is floating."
Floating... Li Aidan and Dao Nan felt an overwhelming sense of fear and panic.
Li Ai whispered, "We can't beat the floating ones..."
Indeed, if wandering spirits move in a floating state, then they are in a ghostly state, and ordinary physical attacks cannot touch them at all... Chen Jing thought, but he wondered if attacks with spiritual power, such as "ghostly blades" and "dark swords", could touch them.
“Its clothes look very new,” Chen Jing added. “They don’t look nearly as tattered as we’ve seen them before.”
"I suspect it's a wandering spirit that has turned into a ghost. It should be nighttime outside now."
At night, the wandering spirits transform into ethereal forms, making them extremely difficult to harm, but their destructive power remains undiminished.
“They’re not a match for us,” Dao Nan said softly. He glanced at the window and, seeing that they hadn’t chased after them, said, “Let’s continue resting until everyone has recovered before we move on.”
"I'll keep watch, you should get some rest," Chen Jing said to Dao Nan.
“…Okay.” Dao Nan did not refuse. With Chen Jing’s help, he took off his heavy armor and sat down next to Li Ai, who was curled up and asleep, leaning against the obelisk.
Looking at everyone who was resting, Chen Jing also became seriously vigilant about his surroundings.
...
After an unknown amount of time, when another section of the incense burned out, Chen Jing lit another section, and they finally woke up.
Zhang Taoying seemed to be in good spirits. She muttered to herself, "Good morning, Chen Jing, I had a good dream last night..."
Then she realized that she was not at home, but with the reconnaissance team.
She is now in a dangerous underground location.
"Phew... Good morning." He Lili rubbed her eyes, leaned on the obelisk to stand up, and dusted herself off. "So tired... I feel like I didn't sleep well at all. This is the first time I've ever slept on the floor..."
"Did you notice anything unusual yesterday?" He Lili asked. "I feel this place is a bit strange."
At this moment, Chen Jing saw a small, spider-like machine crawl out of He Lili's pocket. Its main body was a clear, transparent crystal, with a violet gemstone embedded on its back, resembling a watch face. A narrow yellow light appeared on the gemstone's dial.
After touching the spider, He Lili said, "'Little Sky' didn't find anything."
"What is this?" Chen Jing asked curiously.
“A mechanical fairy made from a piece of sunstone,” He Lili said. “It is connected to my mind. Well, you can understand it that way. It’s a special spell given to me by the spiritual energy I cultivate.”
Every kind of spiritual energy has its own unique characteristics… Chen Jing sighed for a moment before saying, “There were some issues last night.”
He paused, glanced at Dao Nan who had woken up from the noise, and Li Aidan who was still fast asleep, and continued:
"There seem to be ghosts haunting the prison. They look like the prison guards we saw before. Their clothes are intact, but they are floating."
Zhang Taoying was so frightened that her hair stood on end: "Now that you mention it, I also feel like something has been watching me all night."
