Chapter 22 Deleting a friend is already a futile act...
“Mom…” Yu Kui lowered her head, tears almost streaming down her face. She hugged her mother, feeling as if she had a thousand words to say, but she couldn’t utter a single one.
I just feel so lucky.
Having loving parents means that no matter what happens, they will always stand by your side.
In their eyes, she will always be a child who needs to be protected.
Yu's mother gently rubbed her daughter's head. "Let's go home."
"What exactly happened between you and Yu Kui?" After entering the house, Qin's mother looked at her son with a serious expression. "How could you talk to Yu Kui like that today? Your Aunt Yu and the others must have noticed."
"So what if you can see it?" Qin You said expressionlessly, "This is between Yu Kui and me, it has nothing to do with them."
"How can it be unrelated?" Qin's mother thought his idea was too naive. "Yu Kui is their daughter. How can your mother get along with your Aunt Yu in the future if you act like this?"
Qin You's eyes flickered slightly, but he still said, "The affairs of the younger generation have nothing to do with you."
Upon hearing this, Qin's mother didn't know what to say. Qin You was so naive. He had hurt Yu Kui so much. How could Yu's mother not mind?
He always assumed that everything would go as he predicted, without realizing what he would lose by doing so.
"If you do this, I won't be able to have anything to do with the Yu family anymore." Qin's mother sighed. She knew what kind of person Yu's mother was.
The last thing she wanted was for the two families to stop interacting.
Qin You didn't speak, feeling extremely irritated, and blurted out, "Do you really have to have contact with their family? Don't you have any other friends?"
Qin's mother stood there, stunned, looking at her son's cold expression, unable to believe what she had just heard.
"I'm tired," Qin You said. "Don't invite me to these kinds of gatherings anymore."
After saying that, he went into the bedroom without looking back.
Seeing this, Qin's mother remained motionless for a long time. She never expected her son to become like this and didn't understand what had gone wrong.
The moment he closed the door, a hint of self-reproach flashed across Qin You's face, a remorse he himself didn't even realize. He clearly didn't want to say those words, but he just couldn't help it.
Whether it was Yu Kui's questioning of his grades or his mother's admonition to get along well with Yu Kui, he felt offended.
He is a free man; he has the right to choose who he makes friends with, instead of always having someone pressuring him to make decisions.
He loathed his uncontrolled life and always wanted to break free from the whirlpool.
When they got home, Yu's mother told her daughter to change her clothes first, while she went to the kitchen.
Yu Kui came out after getting dressed, and her mother asked her to sit down next to her. The three of them chose a comedy movie and watched it happily.
They didn't press their daughter about what had happened between her and Qin You; they simply prepared her favorite snacks and fruit drinks.
The room was warm. Yu Kui looked at her chat history with Qin You, her fingers trembling as she clicked on Qin You's profile picture. She took a deep breath and deleted him from her friend list.
That's settled then.
Yu Kui silently told herself that only in this way could she gradually break free from the memories of the past.
After the Chinese New Year, the second year of high school started.
Yu Kui walked into the classroom with her new schoolbag on her back. Sun Shuya was already there. She waved and asked Yu Kui how her New Year was.
Yu Kui briefly told her about her trip back to her hometown.
“I really envy you,” Sun Shuya sighed. “My house is always so noisy, I’m tempted to run away.”
Yu Kui couldn't help but laugh, "So you won't make a fuss when you go to school?"
“It’s much quieter than at home,” Sun Shuya asked her for a copy of her winter break homework. “I was writing all night but I still didn’t finish. I was really afraid the English teacher would call my name.”
Like Yu Kui, Sun Shuya was most afraid of her English teacher. Even though she dressed very fashionably and spoke in a gentle and pleasant voice, they were still afraid of her and trembled with fear every time they were called on.
The two looked at each other and then burst into laughter.
Tao Jiang didn't finish her winter break homework either. The other winter break assignments were relatively general, but the grammar assigned by her English teacher was a bit more complicated. If she hadn't taken good notes, she basically couldn't finish the assignments.
Yesterday, she asked Qin You to help her review the key points and spent most of the night catching up on her homework, but there's still a small part left to finish.
She wrote while sending messages to Qin You.
Qin You had already finished her homework and was reviewing her lessons in class when she received his message. After reading it carefully, she replied to each message one by one.
Qin You already knew that Tao Jiang's grades were poor. Concepts that others could easily understand were extremely difficult for her.
During the winter break, Qin You spent a lot of time with her. He wanted to go to the same university as Tao Jiang so that they could still see each other every day like they do now.
He had even already decided which city to go to and what such distant things he would do with her after she went to university.
After the start of the school year, the workload became more intense than before.
Yu Kui devoted most of her time to studying, only relaxing during holidays.
Her grades were among the best in the entire grade, consistently ranking in the top three in monthly exams. Her homeroom teacher had high hopes for her, praising her efforts in class on numerous occasions and encouraging her classmates to learn from her.
Tao Jiang looked at her calm profile and felt a pang of sadness.
These days, she has been trying to win Yu Kui's favor, hoping to make her obey her as before. However, no matter what she does, Yu Kui doesn't care. She is like a river flowing towards the sea, stopping briefly when passing by her, but her destination is only the sea, so she never looks back.
Tao Jiang has met many girls, but very few are as stubborn as Yu Kui.
Sometimes, she even regretted being too self-centered before, otherwise both Qin You and Yu Kui would be under her control now.
She enjoys the vanity of being pampered and also hates situations where things are out of control.
It's such an eyesore.
Seeing Yu Kui standing like a mountain in front of her, Tao Jiang felt frustrated every time, wishing she could step on her head and tell her that good grades were useless, and that the person she liked was easily attracted by her.
However, she said she couldn't export it.
She loses if she tells the truth.
When Yu Kui went to the cafeteria for lunch, she ran into Qin You at the entrance of the teaching building. He walked quickly toward the tree-lined path, his slender figure resembling a straight tree, seemingly unchanged from before.
But this time, Yu Kui didn't have to jog to keep up with him.
Noticing the gaze, Qin You subconsciously turned around, only to find Yu Kui already turning to Sun Shuya to talk about the math problems from that morning.
Looking at her fair profile, Qin You's pupils contracted slightly, and his fists clenched unconsciously, a tension rising in his heart that he himself did not even realize.
But Yu Kui didn't look at him again, as if that gaze was just his imagination. Qin You turned around, suppressing his inner turmoil, and quickened his pace.
After that dinner, he and Yu Kui never spoke again. On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, when Qin's mother came upstairs to visit with gifts, Aunt Yu's attitude was noticeably less warm than before, and his attitude still affected the relationship between the two families.
When Qin's mother returned home, she sighed deeply. Although she did not blame her son, her eyes were filled with disappointment.
Qin You felt terrible. He subconsciously sent a message to Yu Kui, hoping she could ease the tension between the two families. Their problems shouldn't affect the elders' feelings.
Perhaps it was out of habit, but whenever something made him uncomfortable, he would always seek help from Yu Kui. He knew very well that even if they were no longer friends, Yu Kui would still try to see things from his perspective.
That was a habit he had developed over the past ten years.
However, when he sent that message, a message that popped up in the chat box made his blood seem to freeze—
"Yu Kui has enabled friend verification. You are not currently her friend. Please send a friend request first."
Qin You stared at the notification, remaining lost in thought for a long time.
Yu Kui deleted him from her friends list.
He's sending messages unilaterally now, and she can no longer receive them.
After a brief moment of stunned silence, an uncontrollable rage welled up within Qin You—
How could she do that?
What gives her the right to do this?
Qin You stared intently at the chat box, his heart seemingly spasming.
Suddenly, he couldn't remember anything, and a strange sense of unease made him feel like a completely different person.
Qin You sat there in a daze for a long time until his mother called him to go out for dinner, at which point he closed his eyes as if waking from a dream.
Only he himself knows how many ripples were stirred in his heart by that short message.
He was absent-minded all day, ignoring both Qin's mother and Tao Jiang, and just staring blankly at Yu Kui's profile picture.
He had cruelly broken up with her before, but now that she had decided to sever all ties, he felt not joy, but an indescribable sense of unease.
That shouldn't be the case.
Qin You kept denying it to himself, thinking that Yu Kui shouldn't treat him like this.
But if asked why he shouldn't, he couldn't give a clear reason.
It's like I've gotten used to seeing her whenever I turn around, and when I turn back, she's still waiting for me in the same spot.
But who in this world can remain unchanged? Especially since he was the first one to leave.
Qin You did not add Yu Kui back as a friend, nor did he have any further interaction with her.
Time will take everything away.
He told himself that since he had made the choice, he shouldn't regret it.
Only late at night, he would occasionally click on Yu Kui's profile picture and look at her Moments, which were no longer open to him, and there was not even a trace of her messages left.
Qin You strode forward, as if this way he would truly have no regrets.
When he arrived at the cafeteria, he subconsciously bought pork rib rice and sat by the window. Yu Kui and Sun Shuya sat in a corner far away from him. She was talking to Sun Shuya and they both laughed.
She was happy without him.
Seeing this, Qin You realized that no one in this world is indispensable to anyone else, and those things he took for granted were actually no longer true.
This discovery made him realize that what he had lost was not insignificant, and even if he wanted to turn back later, it would be too late to undo the damage.
He looked at the sweet and sour pork ribs on his plate and suddenly lost his appetite.
