Chapter 42 Meeting them... her tranquility was too much of a distraction...
“Mom, I’ve thought this through carefully before I started dating,” Qin You couldn’t help but explain. “The girl I like is definitely the most suitable person for me. Don’t doubt her. We get along very well.”
"Then why did you apply to that university?" Qin's mother stared into his eyes. "This wasn't a decision you made."
"It was my decision," Qin You said, lowering her head. "I just wanted to be closer to her; I didn't think too much about it."
Hearing this, Qin's mother felt even more disappointed.
First, she felt heartbroken that her son had lost his basic judgment because of his relationship; second, she realized that the girl's grades were probably worse than her son's, and that she would not get into a good university.
“Her family will worry about what kind of person she is and what kind of school she applies to, but you are my child, and I have to be responsible for your future.”
Suppressing her anger, Qin's mother said earnestly, "I hope you can stay rational now and not let your emotions blind you. No matter how strong the relationship is, it is unstable if it is not based on a solid future."
“You’re right,” Qin You said, having sobered up considerably after being questioned by her mother. “I will definitely listen to you.”
Qin's mother didn't say much, and only breathed a sigh of relief after watching him change his college application.
“As you get older, there’s less and less Mom can do for you, but parents have their responsibilities. Even if you resent Mom, Mom will accept it.”
Perhaps only when children truly grow up will they understand their parents' good intentions.
But now, he needs more time.
Qin's mother didn't want him to one day regret the choices he had made. Feelings were important, but there were things far more important than that.
When Qin You turns back, he will surely suffer greatly.
"Is that girl a classmate of yours?" Qin's mother looked into her son's eyes.
“No,” Qin You shook his head, “she’s a liberal arts student.”
"Just like Yu Kui?" Qin's mother felt a pang of pain in her heart when she thought of Yu Kui.
If only my son and Yu Kui hadn't fallen out.
"She's in the same class as Yu Kui," Qin You thought of Yu Kui, her feelings becoming complicated. "I really like her."
Upon hearing this, Qin's mother knew that the matter between Qin You and Yu Kui was related to that girl, and her opinion of her plummeted.
"How are her grades?" Qin's mother asked deliberately, "Will she be able to go to the same university as you?"
Qin You looked troubled. "Mom, academic qualifications don't mean anything."
“Academic qualifications certainly don’t mean much,” Qin’s mother agreed with his statement, “but things outside of academic qualifications have influenced your judgment.”
"Mom doesn't care about academic qualifications, but how you conduct yourself is something ingrained in your bones. You'd better take care of yourself."
There were some things that Qin's mother could only hint at, and whether Qin You would take them to heart depended on his own thoughts.
However, how could a young man, so full of passion, truly understand her predicament?
After changing his college application, Qin You changed his clothes and couldn't wait to see Tao Jiang and explain to her why he had changed his mind.
After receiving her acceptance letter, Yu Kui enrolled in swimming and calligraphy classes... planning to use the holiday to complete some things she had been interested in before.
Sun Shuya would occasionally call her and ask her to go out, "Yu Kui, want to go play an escape room game?"
“I’m at the bakery,” Yu Kui said, making cream puffs. “You guys go have fun.”
“That thug is here too,” Sun Shuya said with a smile. “Are you sure you’re not coming?”
"I'm not going." Yu Kui squeezed cream into the cream puff. "You guys play."
"Why have you been acting like an ascetic lately, always learning this or that? How are we supposed to bear it?"
"Learn more of what interests you."
“Alright then,” Sun Shuya said, “I’ll come to your house tomorrow and see if you come out.”
“Sure,” Yu Kui said, “I’ll treat you to hot pot.”
"Okay."
Yu Kui packed up the cream puffs she had made, intending to take them home for her mother, when the wind chimes at the door suddenly rang twice.
Yu Kui looked up and saw two extremely familiar figures walking in.
“It’s my dad’s birthday, so I’m definitely going to bake the cake myself,” the girl said in a melodious voice. “You can help me out later.”
"Okay." The boy ruffled her hair. "What kind of thing are you planning to do..."
Before they could speak, the two saw Yu Kui sitting not far away, quietly watching them with calm and deep eyes.
Qin You immediately lowered her hand from Tao Jiang's head, her gaze drifting as she looked at Yu Kui. "What are you doing here?"
"Learning baking." Yu Kui seemed oblivious to the subtle hint between them, and stood up to leave.
"What are you pretending for?" Tao Jiang grabbed Qin You's arm and looked at Yu Kui provocatively. "Since you've already found out, I'm too lazy to hide it anymore."
Yu Kui stopped and looked at her mocking eyes, then said slowly, "I wish you happiness."
Tao Jiang's expected sadness, grief, and tears did not materialize. Yu Kui was surprisingly calm, as if her being with Qin You was no big deal.
However, Tao Jiang knew exactly how much she liked Qin You.
This is so unlike Yu Kui.
"Actually, we've been together for a while now," Tao Jiang said with a smile. "It wasn't after the college entrance exam that we got together. Qin You liked me back in our second year of high school. Isn't that a surprise?"
Yu Kui ignored her boasting and walked past the two of them.
Tao Jiang was stunned for a moment, and when she realized that she really didn't care about what she said, her mood immediately turned gloomy.
This was different from what she had expected.
She thought Yu Kui would become hysterical, questioning her like a madwoman. At that time, she would definitely say something that seemed like a catastrophe, plunging Yu Kui into hell, and standing on the high ground, looking down on her pain and humiliation like a victor.
Otherwise, she wouldn't have gone to such lengths to conceal her relationship with Qin You.
But now, Yu Kui clearly doesn't care about her relationship with Qin You.
How could she be so calm? What gave her the right to be so calm?
Tao Jiang couldn't understand.
Her histrionic personality seems to be crumbling, revealing her inner paranoia and loss of control.
"Why should we care about her?" Qin You noticed her unease and reached out to hug her. "So what if she knows? We're in a normal relationship, what does it have to do with her?"
"Then why did you let go just now?" Tao Jiang stared at him coldly. "Are you still thinking about her?"
"How could that be?" Qin You couldn't explain why she acted so strangely at the time, and subconsciously said, "I was just afraid that her emotions were unstable and she would hurt us."
"Are you sure?" Tao Jiang narrowed her eyes. "You really think so?"
“Of course,” Qin You said, quite certain that she didn’t like Yu Kui. “Don’t you know who I like?”
“But she liked you before,” Tao Jiang said quietly, “I thought she was going to go crazy just now.”
Qin You also thought that Yu Kui would come forward to question him, but his and Tao Jiang's fantasies were dashed, which made their behavior seem particularly ridiculous.
Yu Kui didn't care who he was with at all; even if that person was Tao Jiang, she could ignore it.
This made Qin You feel extremely uncomfortable, as if he was really looking forward to her having a strong emotional fluctuation, so that he could be sure that she was still the little girl who used to depend on him.
But he still breathed a sigh of relief.
The college entrance exam is over, so even if Yu Kui tells his mother about his relationship, it won't affect his feelings for Tao Jiang.
After leaving the bakery, Yu Kui stood by the roadside for a long time before she could calm down.
She really wanted to question Qin You and Tao Jiang: why did she hurt herself when she had been so good to them?
But she held back.
Perhaps, ignoring it is the best outcome.
One day, these feelings that make her sad will disappear.
A month and a half later.
Mr. Yu pushed his suitcase behind the mother and daughter, watching the students coming and going, a smile on his face. "This is where our daughter will study for four years. This school is really impressive, even more prestigious than your dad's school back then." "Of course," Mrs. Yu rolled her eyes at him, "What score did you get back then? What score did our darling get? What's the comparison?"
Mr. Yu: "..."
After registering, the family settled into the dormitory. There were four beds in total, and the other three were already occupied. Yu Kui stayed in the bed near the back of the door.
"Hello," the three girls, who had already settled in, looked at Yu Kui curiously, "Do you need any help?"
“No need,” Yu Kui shook her head and took out the snacks her mother had bought to share. “My name is Yu Kui, and I’m a freshman in the law department. I’m very happy to be living with you all.”
“We’re all in the same major,” the three girls introduced themselves to each other. “I know you. You got a very high score and you’re quite famous in our school.”
Yu Kui smiled a little shyly, "We're all equally excellent because we got into the same university."
After packing the bedding and luggage, the family of three went out for a meal, and then Yu's mother and father went back to work.
Yu Kui felt a little reluctant. "Mom, I can't bear to part with you."
“If you can’t bear to part with me, call me every day,” Yu’s mother hugged her daughter. “Mom can’t bear to part with you either.”
Mr. Yu looked at the mother and daughter and said, "What are you doing? It's not like we're going to die. It's just a matter of a few hours by plane. You can come over this weekend."
Yu Kui: "..."
After seeing her parents off, Yu Kui wandered around the school, familiarizing herself with the surrounding area.
"Yu Kui, have you registered yet?" Sun Shuya called her. "How's the school? Is it particularly good?"
"It's fine," Yu Kui said, taking a few photos of her. "How's it going on your end?"
“Sigh, there are still some old classmates from our class in the dorm,” Sun Shuya snorted, “I’ll be very comfortable for the next four years.”
After careful consideration, Sun Shuya applied to the Chinese Language and Literature major at a local university. Many girls in the humanities class applied to the same university as her, so the probability of running into acquaintances was high.
“I really envy you,” Yu Kui couldn’t help but say, “but my roommate seems easy to get along with too.”
"That's good," Sun Shuya said. "Are you going home for the National Day holiday? Let's go out and have some fun. You broke your promise before."
"Okay," Yu Kui said softly, "Where do you want to go?"
"Is City B fun?" Sun Shuya wanted to visit her. "How about you familiarize yourself with the place first, and then show me around?"
"Sure," Yu Kui said after thinking for a moment. "Can my parents come along too?"
“Sure,” Sun Shuya said. “You make the plan, and I’ll go with them to find you.”
"good."
After hanging up the phone, Yu Kui felt a warm glow in her heart.
As she was about to return to her dorm, she received another phone call.
"Yu Kui, can you show me around the school?"
As Yu Kui walked to the school gate, Xie Xingzhi, wearing a white shirt, stood quietly under the shade of a tree across the road, attracting the attention of many people.
"How did you know I was here?" Yu Kui walked quickly to his side and said in surprise, "Didn't I tell you which school I was going to apply to?"
“I asked Sun Shuya,” Xie Xingzhi walked to her side, “If you don’t tell me, someone else will.”
Yu Kui raised her hand and touched her forehead. In the novel, Xie Xingzhi did not come to City B, but went to a more distant city.
"Are you also registering today?" Her eyelashes fluttered. "Which university did you apply to?"
“The school across the street from you,” Xie Xingzhi said, “it won’t take five minutes for them to come find you.”
Yu Kui: "..."
"We can eat and study together again in the future." Xie Xingzhi smiled. "Aren't you happy?"
Yu Kui: "..."
"I didn't even know you applied to the school across the street," Yu Kui sighed inwardly. "What's your major?"
"Finance," Xie Xingzhi sighed, "you can't tutor me anymore."
Yu Kui: "..."
