Chapter 65: The City Lord Died
Shu Wan pretended to be serious.
Chunhua knelt down immediately after hearing that.
"Let the young lady punish me as she pleases." But she couldn't help but think that she hoped the young lady wouldn't hit her with a stick or drive her away, or even not give her food, because if that happened, she would be too pitiful.
"Okay, get up. Stop kneeling down all the time." Shu Wan was just teasing her. She didn't think that she was superior to others and that others were not human. She was lucky to have occupied the original owner's body. But in her opinion, everyone was equal, without distinction of high or low.
"Miss, you're not angry?" Chunhua stood up in a daze and asked.
"If I were to get angry for this, then I would probably be angry about so many things every day." Shu Wan said, "You just went to the toilet, why should I be angry? Nothing happened to me during this period. Of course, if something were to happen to me, your small body might not be able to help!" As she said this, she teased again.
Chunhua's face suddenly felt hot.
It was all her fault for being useless, that's why the young lady said that. She decided that starting tomorrow, she would find a master to learn martial arts and then protect the young lady.
"Okay, go back. You should go to bed too. You don't have to keep watch over me. I'll call you if I need you." Shu Wan tightened his cloak and went downstairs.
Chunhua looked at Shu Wan's back and couldn't help wondering why she always felt that when the young lady was talking to her tonight, she was right in front of her, but she felt that there was a very long distance between them. Even the young lady's back now looked so uncomfortable! She had slept too much before, and now she didn't feel sleepy at all.
So she tossed and turned, keeping her eyes open until dawn.
The next morning, someone from the Zhao family came to invite Shu Wan over, saying that they had something to tell her.
Shu Wan put down his bowl and chopsticks, then followed the servant who came to report.
She hadn't eaten much since noon yesterday, and was a little hungry now. She hadn't eaten enough yet, and she was wondering what was going on that made Zhao call her over so urgently.
Putting aside other things, Zhao was relatively humane in her treatment of Shu Wan. She did not require her to visit her parents every morning and evening like other daughters-in-law. If there was nothing important, it would be fine for Shu Wan to sleep until noon.
When Shu Wan arrived, Zhao and Rong Yiyi were having breakfast. When she saw her, Rong Yiyi immediately smiled and stood up to greet her.
"Sister-in-law, you're here." She said affectionately, "My mother and I are having breakfast, please come and join us!" Then she ordered the servants to quickly set the table for Shu Wan.
"Thank you, aunt." Shu Wan was not polite either. She was hungry. "Hello, mother-in-law." Of course, she did not forget to pay her respects to Zhao first.
"Well, no need to be polite, just sit down." Zhao gestured for her to sit down with a smile.
After expressing their thanks, Shu Wan and Rong Yiyi sat down together.
Then she started eating without hesitation.
"Wanwan, I'm so happy that you and Yiyi can get along so well!" Zhao held the chopsticks in her hand but did not move.
"It was I who made my mother-in-law worry before." Shu Wan raised her head and apologized sincerely.
"Mom, this is all in the past, please don't talk about it!" Rong Yiyi was so ashamed that she felt embarrassed.
"Okay, okay, I won't say anything about you. This is your business as young people! I won't get involved." Zhao nodded quickly, indicating that she would not say anything more.
"By the way, mother-in-law, I wonder if you called me over here because you have something to tell me?" Shu Wan smiled. Zhao wouldn't have called her over just to praise her and Rong Yiyi. Since she was waiting for her to speak first, she would just do as Zhao wished.
"Hey, speaking of this, I really don't know how to start the conversation with you." Zhao sighed and looked worried when she heard this.
"Mother-in-law, please feel free to speak up. We are all family, there is nothing to be ashamed of!" Shu Wan first listened to what Zhao was thinking in an unkind manner, and then spoke.
"The thing is, Wanwan, I'm not the kind of old-fashioned and mean person. I won't set rules and family rules for my daughter-in-law after she comes into the family. I can't do such a thing. You know, during the time you and Chen'er have been married, I haven't made any excessive demands on you..." Zhao didn't get straight to the point, but laid the groundwork first.
"My wife knows." Shu Wan was full of gratitude. "My mother-in-law is a very good person and is especially kind to me. I know all this. Thank you, mother-in-law."
"But yesterday, I went to the He family for a banquet and accidentally heard some ladies gossiping..." Zhao looked embarrassed.
Rong Yiyi also looked at Zhao, wanting to hear what kind of rumors made her mother so concerned.
"Mother-in-law, please feel free to speak." Shu Wan continued.
"I heard those people spread some bad rumors about you and Chen'er, saying that... because you were dissatisfied with the fact that Chen'er did not marry you on your wedding day, you were dissatisfied with the City Lord's Mansion, so you didn't take me seriously and even kicked Chen'er out of the room. So I think..." Zhao was hesitant to speak, but her meaning was obvious. "This is also my fault. I didn't have the heart to let you come here early every day, but I didn't expect such rumors to spread..."
"Mother-in-law, please don't say that." Shu Wan hurriedly stopped her. "I was inconsiderate. Mother-in-law was considerate and didn't let me greet you every day. I was so lazy in the morning that I forgot that this would bring such a stigma to the City Lord's Mansion. Don't worry, mother-in-law. From tomorrow on, I will come to greet you every day and will never give anyone a chance to talk about me or let outsiders laugh at me." Shu Wan stood up and bowed respectfully.
"Good child, get up quickly." Zhao quickly reached out to pull her up, "You've been wronged. After a few days, when people don't watch you so closely, mother will never let you suffer again!" She was so moved that she was about to cry.
"Mother-in-law's words are really humiliating to the daughter-in-law. This is the filial duty a daughter-in-law should fulfill. How can I say that I feel wronged?" Shu Wan answered sensibly.
"Good boy, good boy!" Zhao nodded repeatedly.
Next, the three of them sat down and had breakfast, chatting and laughing.
But before we finished our breakfast, we received some bad news.
Yu Jianning was wearing armor covered in mud and blood, his hat was thrown somewhere, and he had a sword on his waist. He ran in in a very embarrassed manner.
There was a dead silence in his eyes.
When he came in, he knelt down in front of Zhao without waiting for others to speak.
Shu Wan couldn't help but shiver when watching the force. How painful it must have been.
"Old lady!" Yu Jianning's eyes were filled with tears, "Jianning is useless. She failed to bring the city lord back!" As he said that, he kowtowed heavily.
His words filled the faces of the three women present with disbelief.
"You...what...do you mean?" Zhao tried to remain calm, as if this way Yu Jianning could give her a satisfactory answer.
Unfortunately, this was just her fantasy after all.
"Madam," Yu Jianning buried his head deeply in the ground, "The city lord was ambushed and died!"
It will be on the shelves tomorrow. There aren't two readers to begin with. From now on, I'm afraid I'll just have to write it and read it myself...
I have become aware of many of the shortcomings in my writing while I was typing, and I will work hard to correct them and learn from them.
Even if "Mind Reading" has only one reader, I will definitely stick to it. I hope that my writing will not disappoint the readers.
Finally, can I ask for your support...
