Chapter 5 Don't be afraid, I'm here.

As if waking from a very long dream, Ling Ruoke slowly opened her eyes.

All I could see was a purple mosquito net. I blinked, then blinked again, but my mind still wouldn't work. I just stared blankly at the top of the net, only blinking.

Her eyes were blurry, and she tried to raise her hand to rub them, only to find that she still had an IV drip in her hand. But this didn't look like a hospital.

The door opened, and footsteps approached the bedside.

Ling Ruoke slowly turned her head to look at the person who had come.

"ah--"

Tan Peishi accidentally spilled the porridge she was holding, some of it splashing onto her feet. She didn't care; she just rushed over.

"Ruo Ke, you're awake! That's wonderful, you're finally awake!"

Tears began to fall like beads again. But this time, they were tears of joy. The doctor said she was extremely weak and her will to live was weak; it had terrified her!

“Peishi…”

Ling Ruoke forced a smile, feeling a sense of relief as she looked at her friend's tears.

"It's me. If possible, I'll stay with you from now on, so don't be afraid!"

Tan Peishi wiped away her tears, grasped Ruoke's other hand, and held it in her own palm. Ruoke's hand was so cold!

"Yes, I know. Where is this?"

Seeing her friend made Ruoke feel at ease. She knew she was safe now.

"This is my home, the home of me and Fu Peigang."

"oh."

"Ah! You've slept for so long, you must be starving. I spilled the porridge, I'll go get another bowl right away. Wait for me, I'll be right back!"

Before she could finish speaking, she rushed off in a flurry, bumping into the door frame and groaning as she ran out, clutching her forehead.

Ling Ruoke finally couldn't help but smile faintly. It was so nice to wake up and see Peishi looking so vibrant!

Smiling, she slowly closed her eyes. A tear slid down her cheek and disappeared into the blankets.

very nice!

"Alright, the porridge is here! Let me tell you, I've been simmering it for several hours! My cooking skills are much better than before, and Fu Peigang said so too."

Ruoke listened to her rattling off a string of words and just smiled.

"Don't you believe me? Once you're better, I'll cook you a huge feast, and you'll see I wasn't exaggerating! Okay, let me help you sit up now so you can really enjoy my cooking! Let me tell you, not just anyone can taste my cooking. But, except for Fu Peigang, I allow you to order anytime, and I'll never refuse! How about that, pretty sisterly, right?"

Hearing her strange and eccentric way of speaking, Ling Ruoke's smile deepened.

“You know, Fu Peigang used to say that even pigs wouldn’t bother with my cooking. Now, his comrades come over to our house whenever they have a spare moment, carrying loads of ingredients. I can’t refuse to cook for them. But every time I see them eating, I don’t feel tired at all; instead, I’m very happy. Do you know why? Because they’ll give you all the sauce, making you feel like your cooking is the best in the world! I really don’t know how to describe that feeling; it’s just so satisfying!”

With Tan Peishi's help, Ruoke drank most of a bowl of porridge. After listening to her chatter on and on, accompanied by exaggerated gestures, Ruoke's eyelids gradually grew heavy, and she fell asleep again.

However, a faint smile still lingered at the corners of her mouth.

Tan Peishi breathed a long sigh of relief and gave herself a victory sign. After tucking her in, she carefully cleaned up the dishes and the broken pieces on the floor.

After getting everything sorted out, I sat down by the bed, propped my chin up, and watched my friend sleep soundly.

After a while, hurried footsteps could be heard in the courtyard.

Tan Peishi shrugged and stood up. The captain was quick enough. Sure enough, the door opened immediately.

"If possible."

Tan Peishi hurriedly put her index finger to her lips.

"Shh—she's asleep again, don't wake her."

Huo Qingfeng frowned and quietly walked in. His gaze never left the person sleeping on the bed.

"Didn't they say he was already awake?"

"She woke up. She even drank a bowl of porridge, and then fell asleep again. The doctor said she's weak, and she needs plenty of rest to recover faster."

I had intended to tease him, but seeing that he was still wearing his training uniform, covered in mud and filthy, I said nothing. Clearly, he had rushed straight from the training field, showing how eager he was.

"Alright. I'll go prepare some food for her. You should also go take a shower before coming in. She's weak, what if you get her infected if you're all dirty?"

Huo Qingfeng, who had already reached the bedside, suddenly took a big step back, looked at Ruoke on the bed for a while, and then turned around and went out to take a shower.

Tan Peishi looked at the empty doorway, then at her friend on the bed, and let out a long sigh of relief and smiled.

If possible, you will definitely be happy! So, get well soon!

...

When she woke up again, it was already dark. A table lamp was on in the room, its orange light dispelling the darkness without being too glaring.

Pei Shi is becoming more and more thoughtful!

Just as I was about to prop myself up against the headboard, I realized something was pressing down on the back of my hand. Turning my head, I saw a black head. The hair was short, standing up like a hedgehog's quills.

She merely turned her head, and the person sleeping by the bed immediately sat up straight, faster than a leopard.

"Ruo Ke, you're awake!"

If only she could look at him without saying a word. It wasn't a dream; it really was him!

Huo Qingfeng, receiving no response, jumped up in fright.

"Are you feeling unwell? Wait here, I'll go get the doctor right away."

"don't want!"

Ruo Ke hurriedly reached out to grab him, but missed.

Upon hearing her words, Huo Qingfeng stepped back, his eyes scanning her up and down to make sure she was alright.

"I'm fine. I just didn't expect..."

She never expected to see him again. She thought she would spend the rest of her life in that cage, waiting for her life to end, until her life was wasted.

Tears slowly slid down my smiling face. Even crying could be done with a smile. I hadn't felt this way in a very, very long time.

Huo Qingfeng gently wiped away her tears with his hand. His fingers were rough, and he dared not use force, afraid of hurting her. She was like a glass doll, unable to withstand any more torment.

As if understanding her feelings, he took her hand and held it in his palm.

"Don't be afraid, I'm here!"

This one sentence, without empty comfort or grand promises, brings a sense of peace to the heart.

Ling Ruoke met his gaze, then smiled through her tears and nodded gently.

"Um."

A thousand words can be summed up in this one response.

Standing at the door, Tan Peishi roughly wiped away her tears and grinned foolishly.
