Chapter 20 If Only He Could Disappear

Ling Ruoke looked up in surprise and saw the face of a young and pretty girl.

Although she had only met him once, he left a deep impression on her. What caught her attention even more was that the woman standing next to her was none other than the woman from the amusement park that day.

"I knew you weren't good enough for Brother Huo! You shameless, promiscuous woman! You have no shame!"

The girl roared angrily, as if she had caught her husband committing adultery, speaking righteously and aggressively.

In an instant, everyone in the restaurant turned to look. They were all students, brimming with curiosity. So they all stopped eating and focused all their attention on what was happening. Some of them even recognized Gu Miaomiao, so they came over as well.

Ling Ruoke felt a little helpless, so she stood up and smiled at her. "I think you've misunderstood. We were just having a meal together as friends, nothing more."

Gu Miaomiao clearly refused to believe it. "You're lying! I saw you two chatting and laughing so intimately! You took advantage of Brother Huo being out on business to seduce another man, you shameless thing!"

Although Ling Ruoke is gentle, she can't just keep enduring the slap she's already received.

“Miss Gu, please watch your mouth. Don’t make things up if you don’t have the facts. Besides, this is a matter between Huo Qingfeng and me. I don’t need to prove anything to you. Making a scene in public like this without knowing the facts is damaging to your image.”

"You, you—" Gu Miaomiao had never been treated like this before, but what she said made perfect sense, so in a fit of anger she raised her hand and slapped her.

Just as Ling Ruoke was about to reach out to block, Tang Yue had already grabbed Gu Miaomiao's wrist.

Gu Miaomiao was furious and started cursing. "You—adulterer, harlot! Let me go, let me go! Sister, sister, please help me teach this wicked woman a lesson!"

"Alright, Miaomiao, stop fooling around." Gu Zhenzhen nodded to Tang Yue, who then let go of her hand and let her hold her sister's hand to prevent her from hitting anyone again.

She then turned to Ling Ruoke and smiled apologetically. "I'm sorry, please forgive Miaomiao. Since she was little, the elders of both our families have told her that she would be Brother Huo's wife in the future, and everyone has been happy about it. So... anyway, I'm sorry!"

Gu Miaomiao was still cursing when Gu Zhenzhen pulled her away.

"Ruo Ke, are you alright?" Tang Yue noticed her pale complexion and became somewhat nervous.

Ling Ruoke shook her head and forced a smile at him. However, she had lost her appetite. The probing gazes around her felt like needles piercing her skin. "I'm sorry, I've dragged you into this. Let's go."

Gu Miaomiao's commotion wasn't so bad, but her sister's words were the real issue. Were both families' elders optimistic? Did this mean Huo Qingfeng's marriage would ultimately be controlled by his elders? Would his parents really approve of a woman like her, with no connections and a divorced past?

Ling Ruoke let out a heavy sigh, her mind in turmoil. "Tang Yue, I'm going back now. We can talk again another time."

Tang Yue knew she was in a bad mood, so he had no choice but to let her leave.

Ling Ruoke walked slowly along the street, her thoughts wandering aimlessly. Suddenly, she remembered the family of three she had seen at the amusement park that day. But the woman she had just seen said that Gu Miaomiao was the woman both families approved of marrying Huo Qingfeng. So, what happened that day?

She suddenly realized that she knew absolutely nothing about Huo Qingfeng. Aside from knowing his name and that he was a special forces soldier, she knew nothing else.

By the time she passed through the park, it was already getting dark. She didn't dare go too far in, so she found a stone bench near the entrance and sat down. There were shops on both sides, and quite a few people were coming and going that evening.

Afraid that Pei-shi would worry, I sent her a text message. But my phone died while I was sending it, so I don't know if it was sent successfully.

A woman was resting her chin on her hand, lost in thought, when suddenly a "woofing" sound came from the nearby haystack, startling her. She quickly stood up and walked a few steps away, and soon saw a puppy that looked to be only a few days old run out of the grass, sniffing as it went.

Ling Ruoke smiled with delight and couldn't help but exclaim, "So cute!"

She slowly approached, squatted down, and held out her hand. The puppy wasn't shy at all, sticking out its tongue to lick her fingers, munching happily. She tried to pick it up, and it obediently didn't struggle, its pair of dark, wet eyes curiously looking around.

Ling Ruoke walked back to the stone bench and sat down, putting the puppy down to play with it. The puppy was tiny, very small, with fluffy brown fur. It was circling around her feet, sniffing here and there, making soft whimpering sounds.

I wonder whose dog got lost. Maybe someone will come looking for it later. It's such a shame; it would be so nice to take it home and raise it. But she's staying at Pei Shi's house now, so it doesn't seem like she can keep a pet there.

She reached out and ruffled the puppy's head, sighing. "It's such a shame I can't keep you."

Looking around, she spotted a small supermarket nearby. Ling Ruoke picked it up and bought a bag of dog food, then returned to their original spot. She placed the food on the ground and watched it wag its little tail, munching away with soft whimpers.

...

When Tan Peishi received Ruo Ke's text message, she was engrossed in watching TV on the sofa, so she glanced at the message and didn't pay much attention to it.

Suddenly, there was a loud knocking on the door. As soon as she opened it, she was pulled into a bear hug. Knowing it was her husband, she immediately bit him hard on the neck. Even though he reeked of stench, a wife doesn't mind her husband's stench, right?!

Tan Peishi jumped off her husband and glared at him. "Since he's someone else, he deserves to have a sty because he came to my house!"

"I'm too lazy to argue with you. Where's Ruo Ke?" Colonel Huo threw down his things and headed straight for Ruo Ke's room.

Tan Peishi crossed her arms and said in a sullen tone, "No need to look anymore, Ruoke isn't home. She went out today and just texted back saying she's having dinner with friends and will be back later."

Upon hearing this, Huo Qingfeng took two quick steps back to his original spot. He reached out to pull her over, but fortunately, Fu Peigang reacted quickly and pushed his wife behind him.

"Having dinner with friends? If we're in Z City, where would we find friends besides ourselves?"

Tan Peishi suddenly realized what was happening and exclaimed, "Ah, I forgot!"

She rushed over to grab her phone; the text message had been sent more than three hours earlier. She was watching TV and hadn't noticed how quickly time had passed.

"Oh no, it's already 9:30!" She looked at her husband and Huo Qingfeng pleadingly. "What should we do?"

Huo Qingfeng glanced at him, then opened the door and rushed out.

Tan Peishi thought, she's doomed!
