Ling Ruoke lay in bed, tossing and turning.
Even though she told herself a thousand times, ten thousand times, not to think about anything, to sleep and eat well so she could stay healthy, sleepiness seemed to be repelled by her magnetic field, refusing to come near her.
Instinctively, I reached for the necklace around my neck, its warmth lingering in my hand. The chain was silver, and the pendant was a Guanyin figure carved from a bullet casing.
In a daze, he recalled what he said when he placed the necklace in her palm:
"If he treats you badly, remember to come find me."
As he spoke, his dark face remained expressionless. But his Huo-like eyes were filled with tenderness.
...
Lian Yi, arm in arm with Cang Weiwo, walked out of the room, glancing at the door across the hall, which remained tightly shut. Reaching the living room, they faintly heard noises coming from the kitchen. She paused, and the man turned to glance at her. She immediately flashed a charming smile and nestled against his arm.
The black Bentley slowly drove out of the garage, ran along the long tree-lined avenue, and arrived at the entrance.
"Wait a minute!" Lian Yi suddenly shouted.
Cang Wei glanced at her coldly, clearly displeased, but still stopped.
Lian Yi quickly put on a smile and said in a coquettish tone, "It's me, I forgot my phone. Wait here for me, I'll go back and get it!"
Without waiting for him to speak, she pushed open the car door and ran out quickly. She had the key to the Cang family mansion, but she couldn't get through the heavily guarded gate, even though she was Cang Weiwo's woman. So this key would only be useful when Cang Weiwo brought her back.
Fearing that Cang Wei might get impatient and drive off, Lian Yi, disregarding her high heels, ran inside as fast as she could. She twisted her ankle several times along the way, and it was already starting to ache.
...
Ling Ruoke put the porridge on the pot to cook, then turned around to take down the clothes she had changed out of yesterday to wash. She knew they had just left, and although she felt a pang of sadness, she felt much more relaxed.
Just as she stepped onto the stairs, she suddenly heard the sound of a key turning in the lock. Before she could think further, the woman named Lian Yi had already pushed the door open and entered. Startled, Ruo Ke turned and quickened her pace to go upstairs.
"stop!"
If I could pretend I didn't hear it, I just wanted to run back to my room and close the door as quickly as possible.
"You bitch, I told you to stop right there, didn't you hear me!" Lian Yi had been wronged last night, and Ruo Ke's indifference now seemed like an insult to her, and her anger flared up.
If she could barely reach the top of the stairs, she would hear rapid thumping behind her, knowing that she was catching up. Panting, she ran quickly towards the door.
But she had been feeling weak lately and was running slowly, while the woman behind her was putting in all her effort. So, just two steps from the stairwell, she was pushed and the person blocked her way.
"Run, keep running, let's see how you run!" Lian Yi put her hands on her hips and sneered sharply. Her swollen face and the scar on her forehead, combined with her sneer, made her look somewhat frightening.
"What do you want to do?" Ling Ruoke took a step back, her hands clenched into fists, her heart pounding like thunder, panic growing in her heart like weeds in an abandoned mansion.
Lian Yi stared intently at that pitiful face, a sinister thought flashing through her mind before taking over. "What do I want? What do I not want? I just want..."
Suddenly, Ling Ruoke felt a chill run through her body and stepped back slightly. Seizing the opportunity to get close to her, she took off running.
Lian Yi was caught off guard and paused for a moment, then suddenly grabbed her and threw her backward. Right there at the top of the stairs.
"Ah—" Ling Ruoke's eyes widened, and she screamed in panic. In her haste, she tried to grab the railing, but missed. She only had time to cover her head as she rolled and thrashed about, feeling dizzy and in pain.
Finally, she tumbled heavily to the bottom of the hallway stairs. She felt dizzy and every bone in her body ached. A sticky, wet liquid was trickling down her forehead.
"Help!" she screamed in her heart, but she couldn't even open her eyes. Pain, boundless pain! And her strength seemed to be disappearing along with the pain.
Panic and fear instantly overwhelmed her heart and mind. Her eyes snapped open.
As she watched the woman run past her quickly, the door slammed shut, and the room fell silent.
Ling Ruoke's chaotic mind gradually cleared. Boundless despair. But she couldn't just sit and wait to die.
So she moved her body, laboriously, inch by inch, towards the telephone. Even though she kept telling herself not to give up, to hold on, she felt her strength dwindling faster and faster. It felt like an eternity, yet she had only moved one step. The telephone seemed so far away.
With my last breath, I finally saw the coffee table with the phone in front of me.
Ling Ruoke slightly curled the corners of her mouth, a smile of hope. With trembling hands, she spent a long time, and just as her strength was about to run out, she finally pulled the phone to the ground.
"Help...me..." She didn't know if the other person heard her, but she could no longer make a sound. Like a fish out of water, her mouth opened and closed, but she remained silent.
The call was quickly disconnected, the dial tone echoing eerily in the silent hall, conveying an air of despair.
Ling Ruoke exhausted her last bit of strength, feeling as if all the blood in her body was about to drain away. Looking down, she saw bright red blood following the path she had taken, forming a blood-red trail, a shocking sight.
Slowly, I closed my eyes, letting the tears stream down my face. Desperately, I awaited death.
Memories, like scenes from a movie, unfold one after another. If only life could start over. She should have known sooner that she couldn't afford this wolf-like man.
...
After Cang Wei finished reading the two reports, the woman still hadn't appeared. He frowned impatiently, started the car, and prepared to leave. Just then, Lian Yi rushed to the car window, hurriedly opened the door, and got in, panting heavily.
Before she could even settle in, the car sped away like an arrow.
Lian Yi gasped and pressed herself tightly against the seat back. She glanced at Cang Weiwo, then turned to look out the window, her fingers twisting nervously. Her mind was a complete mess.
"Screech—," the car suddenly stopped. Cang Wei grabbed her chin and turned her face towards him. "Are you scared? What did you do?"
Lian Yi was so startled she almost jumped out of her seat. "N-no, I didn't do anything! I didn't do anything! Ah—"
The hand on her chin tightened, almost crushing her jaw. "I'll ask you one more time, what did you do?"
The voice was chilling, like that of a demon from hell.
