Li Jun helped the child change into the outfit. It had to be said, although it was a little big, it really looked adorable. The pink bunny costume accentuated the child's rosy cheeks; she looked like a delicate doll. "So pretty! Come here, Xiao Ping'an, look how pretty your little sister is!"
When Xiao Ping'an heard her name called, she slowly raised her head, her big, dark eyes looking at her younger sister. Perhaps she thought she was cute, she stood up with her bottom sticking out and toddled over, a toy in her hand. She pounced on Li Jun's knees, stood on tiptoe, and tried to pull her sister's bunny ears, making "mmm" sounds all the while.
He tried to pull it off for a long time but couldn't, so he got upset, threw the toy in his hand, and tried to pull it off with both hands.
Ling Ruoke and Li Jun were both laughing so hard they were practically falling over. Their mother had caught the little rascal and was giving him a good talking-to.
Ling Ruoke was still cooking in the kitchen when Huo Qingfeng returned, looking disheveled. "Son's back! Oh, that outfit is so cute! My son is so handsome! Son, did you miss your dad?"
Little Ping An may usually be a bit of a troublemaker with his dad, but he still misses him after two days apart. So, he hops on his chubby little feet and pounces on him, launching an attack with both hands, his target being his dad's stubble.
Huo Qingfeng held his little bottom, preventing him from falling onto him. He carried him to the kitchen to see his wife.
"You're back." Ling Ruoke turned around and smiled at him, then frowned when she saw he was covered in dust. "Go take a shower, it's time to eat."
Huo Qingfeng kissed her, then picked up his son and turned to leave. "Son, let's go take a bath!"
"Don't soak for too long, you'll easily catch a cold in this cold weather!" Ling Ruoke poked her head out and reminded the two of them. The father and son were a bit wild when playing in the water. In this weather, they couldn't be allowed to keep up this activity for too long.
"Yes, ma'am!" Huo Qingfeng filled a basin with hot water and put his son in. He then put his rubber duck in so his son could squeeze and play with it. The duck quacked, and his son quacked too, like two ducks.
After the father and son finished showering, Ling Ruoke's meal was already on the table; she had served the rice and was waiting. "Come and eat. Here, let me hold the child."
"I'll carry you, you eat by yourself."
Xiao Ping'an had just finished drinking milk and wasn't hungry; he just liked to cause trouble.
Ling Ruoke had already filled a small plastic bowl with soup and placed it in front of him. He happily bent down to lick it, and when he did, he giggled. His few little teeth peeked out, which was especially endearing.
As soon as he entered the kitchen, Huo Qingfeng noticed that his wife wasn't in a good mood. However, worried about passing germs to the baby, she took a shower first. "Honey, you seem unhappy. What's wrong?"
Ling Ruoke put down her chopsticks, looked at him, unsure whether she should speak. She naturally didn't want to hide anything from her man, and the idea of distrust didn't exist. However, Chen Shan was his soldier and his good brother, and she worried that he might tell Chen Shan in a fit of anger. Although this matter shouldn't be kept from Chen Shan, as Pei Shi said, it was a matter between them as husband and wife, and shouldn't be discussed by outsiders.
"Go ahead and say it." Huo Qingfeng reached out and touched his wife's face.
Little Ping'an followed suit, babbling something and reaching out to touch her mother's face.
Ling Ruoke had no choice but to lean over and let his little hand touch hers. Seeing him chuckle, she sat back down. Looking at her husband's face, she couldn't help but sigh, and finally recounted what she had seen that day.
Huo Qingfeng didn't lose his temper on the spot, but his eyes were practically spitting fire.
Ling Ruoke reached out and placed her hand on the back of his hand. "Qingfeng, don't do this, I'm scared." She was afraid that he would act impulsively when he got angry.
The fire in Huo Qingfeng's eyes immediately died down. He took his wife's hand and kissed it. "Wife, I'm sorry, I scared you."
Ling Ruoke smiled. "Qingfeng, I'm telling you this because I don't want to deceive my husband, not because I want you to stand up for Chen Shan or anything. So promise me you won't tell Chen Shan about this. Let them handle their own affairs; we won't get involved, okay?"
Huo Qingfeng looked at her for a while, then kissed her again. "I know. I just feel sorry for Chen Shan!"
Ling Ruoke naturally understood his feelings, but she didn't know what to say. Little did she know that whether she spoke or not, she would bear the blame in the future, leading to a series of tragedies.
After a moment of silence, Ling Ruoke remembered something even more important. "Qingfeng, on the night of the dinner party, Peishi and I were walking back with the child. On the way, I sensed someone spying on us, and it was a malicious spying!"
Huo Qingfeng frowned, his expression immediately tightening. "Are you all alright?"
Ling Ruoke shook her head. "No. It was just a moment, like my imagination, but I don't think so. And I haven't told you yet, but I have a vague feeling that a storm is brewing and will soon break out. It's strange to me, even though there's no dangerous person here, I still have this feeling."
Huo Qingfeng pondered for a moment, then reached out and took his wife's hand, gently kissing it. "Ruo Ke, I've never told you this, but we failed to capture Gu Tianze back then! He's a mercenary now, known as the 'Wolf of the Northeast'!"
"Mercenaries?" Ling Ruoke had heard of mercenaries.
Huo Qingfeng nodded. "Mercenaries, like special forces, often kill people. But special forces kill bad people, those who deserve to die, while mercenaries are different. As long as they can afford it, they can kill anyone, without any distinction between good and bad!"
Ling Ruoke felt a chill run through her, a coldness spreading from her heart to her limbs. Gu Zheng's obsessive nature couldn't have been innate; it must have been cultivated through someone's indulgence and pampering. Then, her brother, Gu Tianze, might be even more obsessive and insane than his sister! Gu Zheng committed suicide; would Gu Tianze hold them accountable? Was he lurking in the shadows, coldly laughing, manipulating a terrible storm?
She had a terrible premonition, and the answer was—it definitely would!
"Then why don't you try to catch her?" After asking the question, Ling Ruoke realized how silly that question was.
If it were so easy to catch him, we would have done it long ago. If it were that easy, he wouldn't be Gu Tian Ce.
A wolf from the Northeast? That means Gu Tianze's mercenary team has already become quite formidable. The fact that they've grown to this level in such a short time shows just how extraordinary this person is!
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked that." Ling Ruoke quickly grabbed his hand.
Huo Qingfeng smiled slightly and squeezed her hand. "Silly girl, what's there to apologize for? Even a special forces soldier is still human. Humans have things they can't do, or rather, things they can't do for the time being. Although I'm unhappy that Gu Tiance is getting away with it, I don't doubt myself because of it."
This is his confidence, and also his composure.
Hearing him say that, Ling Ruoke felt relieved. This was her man—a pillar of strength, possessing extraordinary willpower and ability, always composed and steady in crucial moments. This man was hers, and she should be proud!
"Don't worry, we'll catch him sooner or later. Good will always triumph over evil; this is an age-old truth and our belief!" If evil people were so easily subdued, where would all the strife and misfortune in this world come from? There will always be some bad people who struggle before they finally submit to the law!
Ling Ruoke reached out her other hand and enveloped his, smiling brightly. "I know. However, before we catch him, I want to arrange for some people to be responsible for Pei Shi and the others' safety. I have a feeling that Gu Tianze will target Pei Shi and the others, but I hope that's just my imagination."
Hopefully, Gu Tianze is a reasonable person, not a stubborn and madman who only criticizes others and is unaware of his own mistakes!
"Okay. I'll arrange it. Alright, the food's getting cold, let's eat first. I haven't had my wife's cooking for days, you can't take that honor away from me!" he said, half-jokingly.
Ling Ruoke smiled, pursing her lips, and placed a piece of food into his bowl. "Eat up." It's only been two days since she left home, how could it be that she hasn't eaten for days? She knew he was exaggerating! However, she felt sweet inside, and her mood improved.
After dinner, they chatted for a while, then Ling Ruoke took a shower. Back in bed, the three of them played together.
Little Ping'an had milk before dinner and is hungry now. While playing, he suddenly came running over like a little leopard, his little bottom sticking out, and reached out to pull at his mother's pajamas. He wants milk!
Huo Qingfeng's face darkened; he was extremely displeased! There was this man who constantly coveted his wife's softness, even crawling over whenever he felt like it, pulling open her clothes, and pouting at her—this was outrageous! "Wife, this little guy is over a year old; shouldn't wean him?"
Ling Ruoke was well aware of this custody battle between her husband and son. As a mother, she naturally loved her child; what child wouldn't drink milk at such a young age? But she also wanted to favor her husband, to spare him all the grievances. "He's only one year and two months old. In a few more months, when he's a year and a half, wean him, okay?"
"Wife, you said it yourself! You're not allowed to side with him anymore, you have to break it off!" Huo Qingfeng said with unusual seriousness. He wouldn't allow this little man to keep eyeing his precious daughter!
Ling Ruoke smiled. "I understand."
Little Ping An, whether he understood or not, stopped drinking his milk, turned his head, and glared at his father with his big eyes, as if to say: You bad guy!
Seeing her son's expression, Ling Ruoke smiled wistfully. "See? Your son is very unhappy with your behavior; he's upset!"
Huo Qingfeng curled his lip and pinched his son's cheek. "What's there for him to be unhappy about! She's my wife, I have the right to be unhappy. If he's so capable, let him go drink milk from his wife!"
Ling Ruoke raised her hand and slapped his hand. What utter nonsense! "If he could go to his wife for milk when he was just over a year old, would he be your son or a monster?"
Huo Qingfeng chuckled at his wife's comment. He realized it wasn't that he didn't love the child; he just wanted to compete with his son for the top spot in his wife's heart. Call him childish, call him silly, but since the boy's birth, his position had become precarious.
Xiao Ping'an glared at his father for a while, but when he realized his father was ignoring him, he continued drinking his milk and stopped wasting time and energy.
Huo Qingfeng watched his daughter suckle for a while, and his heart began to itch with desire. He stretched his legs back, lay down, and brought his mouth to the other soft side of his wife's breast to drink her milk.
Ling Ruoke tried to stop him, but failed, so she simply let him do as he pleased. Anyway, she knew that her husband was just a big kid, and breastfeeding wasn't strange.
But Xiao Ping'an wasn't happy. This was his food, and he wouldn't allow others to covet it! So, he stopped nursing and stretched out his hands, using all his strength to push his father's face! He made "hmm" sounds, clearly putting in a lot of effort!
Huo Qingfeng didn't take his little bit of strength seriously at all. He liked the kid's eagerness, so he sucked even harder.
Little Ping'an tried for a while, making "uh-huh" sounds, but then realized his father was getting increasingly unreasonable. He turned to his mother, calling out, "Mommy," for help. Unfortunately, this clever little guy, who could already say "Papa" and "Mama" at a young age, couldn't speak many words, let alone complete sentences.
Ling Ruoke just smiled and said to him, "Then Xiao Ping'an, please tell Daddy not to drink your milk anymore, okay?"
Xiao Ping'an hummed for a while, not knowing how to tell her father. She looked at her father and then at her mother, her mouth pursed, and then she burst into a loud, earth-shattering wail.
"Honey, stop it, the kids are crying." Ling Ruoke sighed inwardly; taking care of two children was really not easy.
Huo Qingfeng pouted, looking aggrieved.
"Ping An, don't cry. Mommy hits Daddy. Daddy is bad, so Mommy hits him!" She said, and playfully hit Huo Qingfeng twice.
Little Ping An stopped crying, his big eyes still glistening with tears. After a while, he reached out and clung to Ruoke's soft breast, then tilted his head and body to the side, lying down and cuddling the other breast with his mouth. While suckling, he glanced sideways to see if his father was sneaking a bite.
"That brat!" Huo Qingfeng cursed helplessly. He glanced at his wife, his heart itching with amusement at her amused expression, and said, "Wait until he's asleep, you'll be sorry!"
Ling Ruoke was naturally not afraid. Her husband wouldn't even utter a harsh word to her, so she wasn't afraid of any punishment. His punishment, at most, would be to prolong their intimate moments.
Little Ping An glanced at his father, but stopped looking when he got tired and focused on drinking his milk.
Huo Qingfeng acted up again, cautiously reaching out to pinch his son's little hand, trying to remove the pacifier. But the moment he touched it, his son released the nipple, glaring at him menacingly. If he dared touch his son's food again, his son would probably pout and cry.
"If you make him cry again, you'll sleep in the guest room tonight," Ruoke ordered.
Huo Qingfeng pursed his lips and reluctantly let go.
Little Ping An, having triumphed, turned back and drank even more enthusiastically, as if deliberately trying to annoy his father. The gurgling sound of him swallowing milk had a strong hint of boasting.
