"You want to work?" While driving, Huo Qingfeng hadn't forgotten what she had just said.
"Yeah. Staying at home every day is pretty boring. Besides, I need to earn money to support myself."
The man parked the car on the side of the road, and under her puzzled gaze, he pulled her into a long, lingering kiss. He kissed her until she was breathless and her eyes were misty, only then was he satisfied.
"Even if you never work your whole life, I can still make sure you and the kids live a good life, you know?" he declared, pressing his lips against hers, and then couldn't resist taking another bite.
Ling Ruoke nodded, her eyes still misty and watery, making her particularly alluring.
Huo Qingfeng took a peck, then restarted the car. Looking at the still dazed woman beside him, he felt elated.
When Ling Ruoke came to her senses, her face flushed crimson again. At the same time, her heart warmed. She knew he could support a family; the amount in his salary card wasn't small. Most importantly, he was willing to support her!
"I want to work."
She still hoped to have a job and retain her individuality. Otherwise, she worried that one day he would also feel that she was out of touch with the times.
"I'm glad you like it. But being a pastry chef is tiring. Have you ever thought about becoming a teacher? I know a primary school is hiring, and I think you'd be a good fit."
Knowing that the boss was her college classmate, he was even more opposed to her working there. A girl like Ruoke must have had countless admirers in college, and that boss might have been one of them. He wanted to nip it in the bud, no matter how small the possibility.
Ling Ruoke looked at him, her heart filled with even more emotion. He must have thought of everything for her long ago. She felt ashamed of herself once more. While she was wallowing in self-pity, he had already made so many preparations.
"Really? That's great! I also like being with those kids." Anyway, she likes children, and the school environment is simple and peaceful.
"Leave it to me."
"Um."
...
Although Ruoke had high requirements for furniture, she still managed to furnish the house after some effort.
On the day of the housewarming, the two had just started cooking according to custom when they heard a commotion downstairs, with a group of people shouting:
"Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, I want to eat! Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, I want to eat..."
Ling Ruoke ran to the balcony and saw a large group of more than a dozen people walking into the stairwell. Each person was carrying groceries or drinks, making quite a spectacle, which attracted the curiosity of the neighbors who came out to see what was going on.
Tan Peishi rolled her eyes. "These guys! We'll be in big trouble if the neighbors sue us for disturbing the peace!"
Despite saying that, her smile remained bright, showing how much she liked them.
As soon as the door opened, a group of people rushed in, shouting, "Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, we want to eat!" Ruoke had initially been worried about feeling awkward and not knowing how to greet them. But their commotion made her feel much more at ease.
After they put their things down in the kitchen, they ran out and teased their captain. Huo Qingfeng joked with them, calling them "rascals" one after another, and felt that the atmosphere should be like this, and everyone was having a good time.
The only thing that was both funny and frustrating was that the bright, shiny floor was suddenly covered in scratches. But they didn't seem to mind at all; they pressed each other's scratches and rolled around on the floor.
Ling Ruoke hurriedly poured water for them and went to the kitchen to wash several large plates of fruit, cutting and arranging them before bringing them out. Seeing them rolling around on the floor, she thought to herself, "Luckily, I left Dou Dou at Pei Shi's house." Dou Dou was the name she had given the little dog.
One of the soldiers shouted excitedly, "Captain, your wife is so skillful! You're so lucky! I can't believe it, you have to introduce me to a girl right now!"
Ling Ruoke simply smiled, her smile as radiant as a flower, dazzling the eyes of the soldiers who had been parched for so long.
Huo Qingfeng replied coolly, "No problem. Your sister-in-law will be going to school in a few days. There are lots of girls in her class, so you can each have one!"
Ling Ruoke knew he was up to no good, so she glared at him and secretly pinched him.
But Huo Qingfeng grabbed her hand and shouted, "Wife, if you're going to pinch, pinch me openly and honestly."
He rolled up his sleeve and stretched his arm out in front of her. "Come on, honey, let me pinch you as much as you want!"
Ling Ruoke blushed deeply, glared at him, and hid in the kitchen. With so many people, it was time to start preparing.
One soldier yelled at the group, "Brothers, the captain is just showing off like a madman. Does he even want us lone soldiers to survive?! Brothers, let's attack!"
A group of people got into a tug-of-war and turned their living room into a training ground. Hopefully, the people downstairs won't come up and yell at them!
"Captain, are there really a lot of girls in your wife's class?" Someone who was desperate for a wife hadn't forgotten about this.
Huo Qingfeng glanced at him, nodded, and answered seriously, "Your sister-in-law will be a teacher at Yucai Elementary School in a few days, and there are indeed dozens of girls in her class."
These words sparked another uproar. Judging by their posture, it seemed like they wanted to tear the whole house down.
Ling Ruoke and Tan Peishi were busy in the kitchen, listening to the noise outside, which was as loud as a vegetable market. They were both amused and exasperated, but in a very good mood.
"How about that? Now you've seen how terrifying these people are, right? Let me tell you, what you'll see when the food is served is truly terrifying. You have no idea what it'll look like—it'll be like you're feeding a dozen pigs!"
Ling Ruoke glared at her. "Don't swear."
Tan Peishi stuck out her tongue. "I was just using a metaphor, I definitely didn't mean to insult anyone, hehe. But don't be fooled by how big this mountain of food looks, we might not even have enough to eat later."
Fortunately, Ruoke had a huge rice cooker and more than a dozen large basins at home. She had prepared them because Peishi had told her that the soldiers often came to visit.
There aren't many types of vegetables, but there's a lot of them. If you cook a large amount of vegetables in one pot, it definitely won't taste good. So, if possible, I have to cook the same vegetable in several batches and then pour it into a large bowl.
Ruoke bought six folding tables and arranged them in two rows in the living room. Dishes, served in bowls, covered the tables. More food was being prepared in the kitchen.
Ling Ruoke was preparing the last dish of boiled fish when suddenly the man wrapped his arms around her waist. He kissed her on the cheek and rested his chin on her shoulder.
"Wife, you've worked hard!" Huo Qingfeng was happy and proud. His wife was gentle and generous, making those guys eat and play happily.
Ling Ruoke blushed and turned back to peck his cheek. "This is the last dish. You should go out and play with them. They rarely come here, so don't let them not have a good time."
Huo Qingfeng curled his lip. "Rare? You'll see later. They'll come over whenever they have the chance, wanting you to cook them something delicious!"
Ling Ruoke smiled as she imagined the scene when she walked in today. "You like them like this, don't you? As long as everyone is happy, it's fine this way."
Colonel Huo was so amused by his virtuous wife that he cried out in delight and insisted on kissing her a few times before Ruo Ke chased him out.
By the time several large bowls of boiled fish were served, the other dishes on the table had been almost finished. As soon as the boiled fish were put down, pairs of chopsticks eagerly reached in.
“Sister-in-law, they all came from pigsties and have never eaten such delicious food before. I hope I didn’t scare you!” Wu Di, the captain of the fourth squadron, shouted at the group of refugees.
Ling Ruoke smiled brightly; she liked this kind of straightforwardness and sincerity. "I'm glad everyone likes it. If it's not enough, there's a supermarket downstairs, and I'll make more for everyone."
The group immediately erupted in cheers, exclaiming how wonderful their sister-in-law was!
Ling Ruoke wiped the sweat from her face, remembering what Pei Shi had once said: "Seeing them eat so happily, you feel that all the hard work is worth it!"
That's what makes soldiers so endearing, isn't it?
