Chapter 39
The maintenance worker threw Xu Candong's mobile phone into the fire and retreated to a safe distance.
The moment he raised his hand, something swayed between the cuff of his work clothes and his gloves. In the light of the fire, it looked like a beaded bracelet, and then disappeared into the cuff.
The repairman seemed eager to admire it a little longer. However, perhaps worried that nearby residents would soon call the police, he could only regretfully put his mask back on his face and walked away, looking back every few steps.
After walking out of the alley, he reconnected the car's oil inlet pipe to the engine, snapped the hood shut, and walked towards the dark street.
He did not notice Song Zhou, who was wearing black and hiding at the side of the alley behind him.
After the repairman disappeared, Song Zhou emerged from his hiding place, reentered the alley, and approached the flames. Xu Candong, trapped in the flames, was already motionless.
He stared at the flaming corpse, the firelight reflected in his gloomy pupils.
After planning for so long, someone got there first.
The "maintenance man's" behavior coincided with some details in his plan. If he had not never written down the plan or revealed it to anyone, one would almost suspect that the "maintenance man" had plagiarized his ideas.
And his original plan was to force Xu Candong to tell something.
Well, now it’s all gone to waste.
It was all the fault of that "maintenance man." He looked gloomily towards the entrance of the alley.
I didn't dare get too close just now, so I couldn't see his face clearly. But there was a sense of familiarity.
The sound of a fire truck's siren came from the distance, and he could only leave with regret.
He walked back at a leisurely pace, and when he passed the water station, he put the empty bucket back where it was.
I walked back to Chunzhi Street, then back to the hospital via the wall. In the woods, I took off my black shirt and pants. It was just a light, thin sports suit. Along with my hat, mask, and gloves, I rolled them up into a ball.
Then he put on his glasses and white coat, smoothed his squashed curly hair, and holding a ball of clothes, he returned through the side door to the north side of the first floor of the inpatient building and walked towards the morgue at the end of the corridor.
Outside the morgue was a yellow medical waste bin filled with the clothes of deceased patients. He tossed the clothes in and returned to the seventh floor via the stairs.
It was almost 2 a.m., just as he'd expected. At the nurses' station, the nurse was still asleep, sound asleep.
The sound coming from the public restroom was the sound of a walker being dragged.
The old man in bed 29 is hiding inside smoking again.
The old man was hospitalized for rehabilitation due to the sequelae of cerebral thrombosis. He had poor sleep and could not distinguish between day and night. He also had a stubborn habit of sneaking out of the ward in the early morning to find a place to smoke a cigarette.
The old man didn't have a watch, and he often left his cell phone off and forgetting to charge it. He didn't know the exact time he got up to smoke. But the human body clock is incredibly accurate. Song Zhou observed that it was always around 2 a.m.
Song Zhou walked towards the restroom. As he walked, he set his watch back one hour and caught the old man in the bathroom.
"My dear uncle, it's already one in the morning, and you're still smoking here?" He raised his wrist and poked the surface to show the other person.
The old man has a lot of problems, but his eyesight is really not blurry.
He glared: "What do you care?"
"Okay, okay, okay. It's only one in the morning, and it's still early for dawn. Please go back to sleep." Song Zhou deliberately repeated it to deepen the impression. His eyes behind the glasses were curved, revealing a smile from the heart.
…
All the steps were calculated long ago. If the police came to him one day, they would find no evidence that he had ever left the hospital.
Unexpectedly, a "repairman" suddenly appeared out of nowhere and killed Xu Candong. He was also at the scene. If he was not careful, wouldn't the "repairman" be blamed?
Fortunately, I had made perfect preparations beforehand.
However, Chang Ting actually found him in such a short time, which was so fast that it was beyond Song Zhou's expectations.
He tilted his head to look at the lockers to the side. Each doctor had their own locker compartment for personal belongings. In his compartment, a pair of size 44 black sneakers sat quietly.
Chang Ting just checked his shoe size specifically, which means that shoe prints were found at the scene.
He recalled what happened that night.
The "repairman" was very careful and probably left no obvious footprints. But when I went into the alley after the "repairman" left to investigate, I accidentally stepped on a puddle of unburned gasoline... which must have left a footprint.
All the black clothes and pants were thrown into the medical waste bin on the first floor, but it was inconvenient to throw away the shoes halfway, so I put them back on.
If Chang Ting had been a little more stubborn and domineering, and had come in to search, he would have found these shoes and then discovered the gasoline content on the soles.
Then he really has to take the blame for the "repairman".
It would be fine if I did it myself, but it's really infuriating that I didn't. What a dangerous mistake.
Song Zhou sighed softly. Chang Ting was much more difficult to deal with than he had imagined. He would have to be more careful next time.
Fortunately, I was careful enough to buy sneakers that were one size larger than my usual size.
There was another problem. Although the surveillance on the Linhuai Road section was inoperative, with Chang Ting's ability, he would definitely track down the image of the "man in black" and become suspicious.
But that image doesn't match "Song Zhou" at all.
Everything about "Song Zhou" is a mask. The person who goes out to do bad things is the real him after taking off the disguise.
That guy was already dead. The police couldn't possibly find him unless they dug deep into the underworld.
