Chapter 20 Did you think I was going to steal a kiss from you?
"Affectionate Card: Are you curious about how he/she acts cute? Then this is a rare bonus card."
"Applicable to: No limit. How to use: Silently say the name of the item in your mind and touch the designated object. The item will take effect within five minutes."
Wen Chu was speechless inside, but unfortunately, with others in front of her, she couldn't show it.
Is this insane? This is insane! What am I even curious about? Who would be curious about Lu Ming's coquettish behavior? Just thinking about it sends chills down my spine! System, if you don't want me to complete the game, just say so! What is she expecting? This is worse than the changing room!
I'm so annoyed, but I still have to keep smiling.
Ignoring her anger, the system continued: "Side quest - Attending the banquet as Lu Ming's date has failed! The side quest has now been refreshed: Please stop the male lead from drinking the drugged wine."
What?! Is someone trying to poison Lu Ming's drink?! Is he being targeted?
She glanced nervously at the guests, trying to memorize each face, feeling that anyone could be up to no good. Then she looked in Lu Ming's direction to make sure he hadn't been drinking yet.
But this is too difficult! Isn't attending a banquet all about drinking and socializing? That guy is the host tonight, how can he not drink? What will happen if he drinks? Will he die? She asked herself in despair.
If she were to die, the only solutions she could think of were either to disrupt the banquet and make everyone stop drinking, or to knock Lu Ming unconscious and hide him somewhere no one could find him for the night.
But the system mysteriously replied, "No, but something bad will happen."
Wen Chu breathed a sigh of relief; that was alright.
She suddenly remembered that there were no penalties for failing a side quest, which meant it shouldn't affect her life.
"What are you looking at? Is someone you like on the field?" Qi Siyan asked jokingly.
But as he asked the question, his gaze followed Wen Chu's line of sight and found that person.
"Huh?" Wen Chu snapped out of her daze and quickly looked away. "No, no, actually I came here with a task from my dad. He told me to learn from the way the elders conduct business negotiations so that I can be more composed when communicating with others in the future. I'm keeping that in mind and observing them."
"Is that so?" Qi Siyan chuckled. "In that case, I won't disturb this beautiful lady as she completes her task. But actually, you've done a very good job. Also, feel free to ask me any questions you may have; I know a bit about work-related matters." He then took out his phone and waved it in front of Wen Chu. "Shall we exchange contact information? I think we'll be meeting quite a few times in the future."
The man was very perceptive and clearly sensed that Wen Chu didn't want to continue the conversation, so he stopped there at just the right moment. His manner of speaking was also very approachable, like a gentle breeze and a bright moon, making her feel comfortable. Wen Chu secretly marveled at how shrewd these days' rich kids were. She nodded, having no reason to refuse: "Okay."
She reached for her phone, only to realize she had nothing on her person, and could only say sheepishly, "Ah... but I didn't bring my phone."
This also reminded her that she hadn't even paid attention to her own world's phone number, and she couldn't verbally give it to the other person now, fearing that the other person would misunderstand it as a way of refusing. Wen Chu quickly said, "I'll come find you after I get my phone."
Qi Siyan put her phone back and smiled, "Okay, it's a deal."
After everyone left, Wen Chu couldn't help but take another look, thinking that this must be a mixed-race person, as exquisite as a BJD doll.
Soft music played in the hall. Chairman Qi gave a speech on stage, thanking all the guests for coming. Everyone chatted and exchanged pleasantries in a relaxed manner, and some even went to the center to dance.
Wen Chu felt that the side quests issued by the system were all designed to make things difficult for people.
In this hall, everyone's every word and action was being secretly watched. She could only sneak peeks at Lu Ming's movements. How could she tell him not to drink alcohol, not even a drop?
I haven't even had a chance to say a word yet. Even if I did, the other person might not believe me, and might even think I'm stupid.
She sighed and wandered aimlessly around the field for a while. Many people came up to talk to her, after all, they all wanted to use her to get in touch with the Wen family and get to know this seemingly "powerful" character.
While dealing with the situation, Wen Chu subtly moved closer to Lu Ming, but Lu Ming seemed to quickly realize her intentions and began to subtly move away as well.
The two ran and chased, the distance between them fluctuating, like they were circling around in the hall. Wen Chu maintained a smile on her face, but secretly she was grinding her teeth, wishing she could just walk up to them, catch them, and beat them up.
After seeing off another polite person, she noticed that the man Lu Ming was talking to took a glass of wine from the waiter's tray and handed it to Lu Ming. Lu Ming politely took it and held it in his hand, seemingly unsure whether to drink it or not. Wen Chu's heart jumped into her throat, and her patience, which had been like that of a tortoise and a hare in a race against time, was completely shattered.
Without further hesitation, she picked up another glass of wine from the table and strode quickly toward Lu Ming.
The moment she moved, the man's gaze seemed to shift towards her for a fleeting instant.
Wen Chu chuckled. This damned man was indeed watching her every move. The sound of her high heels hitting the ground, growing louder as they approached, seemed like Lu Ming's death knell, causing a barely perceptible hint of anxiety to appear on his face, yet he couldn't escape immediately.
Wen Chu saw this and, without looking at him, pretended to go to the restroom. As she casually passed by, she twisted her ankle and staggered behind Lu Ming. With a soft cry, the champagne in her hand spilled perfectly onto Lu Ming's suit, soaking his expensive suit.
Wen Chu quickly bent down, clutching her chest and apologizing to Lu Ming with remorse: "I'm so sorry, Mr. Lu, I've gotten your clothes dirty!"
Lu Mingming knew that Wen Chu was most likely faking it, but he still subconsciously steadied her just as she was about to fall. He pulled his hand away after Wen Chu regained her balance, then took off his clothes expressionlessly and said in a low voice, "It's okay."
Wen Chu said awkwardly, "I'm so sorry, do you need to go to the restroom to take care of this?"
Lu Ming lowered his eyes, secretly glared at her, then lowered them again, composed himself, and said very politely and gentlemanly, "It's nothing, Miss Wen, you don't need to worry about it. I'll just go upstairs and change."
Wen Chu lowered her head slightly apologetically, still immersed in her acting: "Alright then, I'm really sorry. If you need something, I can buy you something else."
"Really, no need," Lu Ming said, emphasizing each word, as if telling her to stop.
Some people nearby couldn't help but glance over a few more times. Qi Siyan stood on the other side of the hall and watched the whole scene from afar.
Wen Chu, knowing when to stop, said "Okay then" and headed towards the restroom. Before leaving, she subtly kicked the man's shoe with the tip of her high heel and said, "See you on the second floor."
The second floor consists of suites for guests to relax in; those who don't want to go home that night or who have had too much to drink can rest here. The banquet has just begun, and almost no one is coming up yet, so the hallways are very quiet.
Wen Chu went to the restroom in the corner of the first floor and took the elevator there to the second floor. As soon as the elevator doors opened, she met Lu Ming's gaze as he came up the stairs from the other side. Wen Chu raised an eyebrow at him from afar, as if to say, "You can't escape this."
Lu Ming glanced at her expressionlessly, his wet suit jacket still resting in his hand. He stopped in front of a room door, took out a room key from his coat pocket, and opened the door.
Seeing this, Wen Chu quickened her pace. Just as she was about to close the door, she checked her surroundings to make sure no one was there, then slipped inside.
Lu Ming was not surprised at all by her barging in without warning, and closed the door after she came in.
Wen Chu breathed a sigh of relief; at least she could finally talk to someone.
She turned around and glared at him, annoyed. "Please, is it so shameful to know me? Why are you avoiding me? Don't you see how many people here want to get to know me? I just wanted to say a few words to you, but it's acting like we're having an affair."
"Having an affair? You dare to even think about it." Lu Ming sneered, threw his coat on the ground, loosened his cuffs, and said, "You just finished talking to another man and then came to me. You're the only one with potential in this area."
"That sounds a bit sour..." Wen Chu paused, then guessed, "Could it be that you're jealous?"
"I think your self-delusion has worsened." Lu Ming looked at her coldly: "What exactly do you want by getting so close to me?"
"How do you know I've been getting closer to you if you don't look at me?"
"I don't want to hear what you're saying. I came here just to tell you to keep pretending as you are, that will make you seem smarter. Don't look at me, don't come near me, and don't talk to me."
Wen Chu, however, was completely on a different wavelength. She twirled around, confidently showing off her outfit: "You think I look great today, right? Weren't you amazed? Don't you think appearances can be deceiving?"
Lu Ming remained completely unmoved. "What happens to you is none of my business."
Wen Chu curled her lip, knowing that this person couldn't possibly say anything nice.
Taking advantage of a moment when no one was paying attention, she grabbed the man's neatly tied tie and pulled him down so that his eyes were level with hers.
The distance suddenly shortened, and Lu Ming's pupils contracted sharply. Before he could react, Wen Chu's mouth and nose moved even closer to his lips, as if she wanted to kiss him.
Lu Ming gasped, instinctively holding his breath, and even clenched his fists.
But the expected warm touch did not come; Wen Chu merely sniffed at his lips.
After realizing what was happening, Lu Ming hurriedly pushed her away, angrily saying, "What are you doing! Don't you have any sense of propriety?"
"I didn't smell any alcohol..." Wen Chu relaxed, then smiled mischievously, "Why are you so nervous? Did you think I was going to steal a kiss from you?"
"you……"
"Why is your face red?" Wen Chu clicked her tongue. "I didn't expect you to be so innocent. I never would have guessed."
The Lu Ming in front of her was 26 years old, the same age as her. But she was used to seeing the truly composed 30-year-old Lu Ming, who would remain calm even if Mount Tai collapsed in front of him. That person always had the upper hand in terms of aura, so she always felt that the person in front of her could only be considered a younger brother. No matter how mature he pretended to be, he could not completely hide the immaturity that had not yet faded.
When talking to the other person, Wen Chu always tends to imagine herself as the older, superior one.
Her gossipy nature got the better of her, so she took another step forward and asked, "You don't still have your first kiss, do you? You seem so nervous."
Lu Ming quickly composed himself. "What's it to you? Now, get out of here immediately."
"Wait, I have something else to say."
Lu Ming frowned in annoyance: "What else is there to say?"
Wen Chu asked bluntly, "Could you please not drink tonight?"
