Chapter 51 Imbalance
Wen Chu finally had no choice but to back down and explain, "I went to get my plaster doll! I put it in the flower bed across from the haunted house! Really!"
Lu Ming then stopped and put her down.
The two of them went to the flower bed together in silence to get something.
Wen Chu picked up the doll and the packed food, and breathed a sigh of relief: "Thank goodness they weren't stolen."
"Who would steal this ugly thing of yours?" Lu Ming glanced sideways at the dark, reddish object in her hand.
Wen Chu originally said that her phone hadn't been stolen, but upon hearing this, she retorted irritably, "I drew it based on yours. If you say it's ugly, it's because you're ugly."
Lu Ming scoffed dismissively, clearly unaffected by the remark.
Well, calling him ugly doesn't seem to hurt him at all. This guy even knows he's good-looking.
The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters within minutes. There were no injuries, only some people were shaken.
Not long after, the loudspeaker above the amusement park began broadcasting: "Good evening, everyone! The fireworks show tonight is about to begin. Please move to an area with a wide view to watch!"
Wen Chu glanced at her phone and saw that it was already 8:58. She quickly threw everything she was holding at Lu Ming, took out the Ferris wheel ticket from her pocket, and said coldly, "I'm going to the Ferris wheel to watch the fireworks show. If you want to go back first, then go ahead. Do as you please."
"You..." Lu Ming watched helplessly as the woman abandoned him once again, strode towards the Ferris wheel, handed her ticket to the ticket inspector, and climbed inside.
The security guard over there was already urging us on; it was clear that there wouldn't be any seats available now.
Lu Ming sighed softly and turned to walk towards the exit.
The weather was clear tonight, with twinkling stars and a beautiful moon. Even with the accident, some tourists stayed in the park to wait for the fireworks debut, and the area near the viewing platform was already packed with people.
The Ferris wheel slowly rose, and the fireworks began their countdown to bursting into the sky. Wen Chu sat inside, looking into the distance, and saw that Lu Ming only stood in the same spot for less than a minute before turning around and walking against the flow of people.
The other party didn't even want to wait for the time it takes for a fireworks display.
Wen Chu stopped looking at people, and as she gradually rose higher, the noise around her faded away. She looked up, her vision widening, and she drew closer to the starry sky. The time on the lock screen turned to exactly 9:00 PM, and the dazzling spectacle arrived as scheduled.
A burst of fireworks shot into the sky before her eyes, quickly blooming into beautiful patterns. One after another, they followed closely behind, blooming in a riot of colors, dyeing the night with vibrant hues, a truly magnificent sight.
The fireworks reflected in Wen Chu's eyes, casting flickering light and shadow on her face. She was captivated, gazing at the sky and grinning. The small space isolated her from the outside noise, allowing only the sound of fireworks bursting, a moment to briefly forget her worries and enjoy a moment of tranquility.
As the Ferris wheel reached its highest point, she pressed herself against the window and looked down. The world below seemed so small now, with the city's night view stretching out before her, peaceful and beautiful, but she could no longer make out the figures of people below.
A gentle breeze seeped in through the cracks in the glass. Wen Chu gazed at the fireworks bursting in front of her, recalling the figure she had just been standing in the flames.
The panic and scrambling around her made the man walking towards the fire seem particularly conspicuous. She didn't have time to examine Lu Ming's expression closely in that instant, but upon reflection, she guessed it was one of worry.
Thinking about it that way, she really shouldn't have spoken to people like that.
Wen Chu took a deep breath and mentally berated herself again. She didn't know what was wrong with her; why did she get so easily angered over such a small thing? It must be because the weather was too hot, making her irritable and easily angered.
She hesitated for a long time, but finally decided to ask, "System, please help me check Lu Ming's current level of affection for me."
She knew that the number of inquiries was limited and she shouldn't ask lightly, but at this moment, she really wanted to know how much the other person liked her now after spending a day with her and after that recent conflict.
The system always responds quickly to these kinds of questions: "Please wait, it is detecting."
This was no different from hearing one's own exam results. Before receiving the answer, Wen Chu even wanted to cover her ears and pretend she was burying her head in the sand.
Three seconds later, the system replied: "The system detected that the male lead's current affection level towards the host is 35%. Please keep up the good work. Note that you have 4 affection level queries remaining."
The number at the beginning of the page moved up one digit, which made Wen Chu's heart tremble slightly, but after calming down, she still didn't know whether to be happy or sad.
Because she couldn't determine where 35% of her affections would fit in Lu Ming's heart. The fact that he would risk his life to rush into the fire to find her could be driven by feelings, or it could be by a sense of responsibility.
After all, given her status, if something happened to her, his fate wouldn't be much better. It's hard to say what the other party's motives were at that moment.
There was some emotion involved, but Wen Chu was most wary of being presumptuous.
She watched the Ferris wheel slowly descend; her brief utopia was about to end.
"I never thought 100 was such a big number. It's so hard... When will I ever reach that number..." Wen Chu leaned against the window, deflated, her face filled with despair.
The Ferris wheel slowly descended to its lowest point and came to a stop. Staff members opened the door from the outside. Wen Chu bent down and came out, walking down the steps with a dejected expression.
The amusement park's announcement system came on again, declaring that tonight's show was over. The tourists began to head back in droves, many crowding in front of Wen Chu and blocking her view.
She picked up her phone and glanced at it, deciding to take a taxi home, still wondering whether she should go see him again after getting home.
"That would be too embarrassing... No, I have to think of a way to make him give me a way out." As she pondered, she moved towards the door with the crowd. Suddenly, she saw a pair of black and white sneakers in her line of sight, exactly the same as the ones Lu Ming was wearing today, walking against the flow of people towards her.
Curious, she looked up to see who it was, and her eyes met a pair of beautiful, dark eyes.
Lu Ming took off his outer coat, revealing only a simple white T-shirt underneath. He carried a black travel bag over one shoulder, and his youthful charm wafted out with a faint, pleasant fragrance.
He stopped in front of her, and people passing by occasionally bumped into his shoulder.
Wen Chu opened her mouth, but forgot to make a sound.
"If you're not coming to find me, where are you going?" Lu Ming asked, narrowing his eyes in an annoyance.
"Didn't you leave? Why are you back?"
"Which eye of yours saw me leave?"
Wen Chu wanted to say that she had seen it with both eyes, but then a box of Häagen-Dazs was shoved into her hand. She glanced down at it, and in that instant, something began to gather in her chest, a feeling that was hard to describe, yet no longer oppressive.
"Let's go home, it's so crowded." Lu Ming turned around, avoiding someone who was about to bump into him again, and walked to her right to stand side by side.
Wen Chu suddenly realized, could it be that this guy actually went to buy her ice cream? Was it because she was so hot?
She tilted her head to look at the person's shoulder: "Why did you buy a bag too?"
"I just bought it when I saw it, but you've stuffed so much stuff into my hands, how am I supposed to carry it all?"
"Then where did this come from?" Wen Chu waved the ice cream in her hand. The two scoops of ice cream had melted a little, so it looked like she had bought them a while ago.
Lu Ming said expressionlessly, "I stole it."
Wen Chu rolled her eyes at him, but her mood improved somewhat. It was hard to tell whether he bought her ice cream while buying a bag, or bought her a bag while buying ice cream.
Wen Chu then asked, "Did you see the fireworks just now?"
"I saw it."
"You're watching from here?"
"Otherwise what? I don't have a ticket." Lu Ming said sarcastically.
"You're a master of time management! You get so much done in just ten minutes."
Lu Ming gladly accepted the title: "It has always been like this."
Wen Chu pursed her lips speechlessly. After walking for a while, she noticed that the man's right hand had been hidden behind his backpack the whole time, as if he was holding something. She subconsciously wanted to look behind him, "What are you holding in that hand?"
Lu Ming's eyes flickered, and he turned slightly to block her view, his expression somewhat unnatural: "It's nothing."
"You're practically wearing your guilty conscience on your sleeve! There's a problem! Show it to me!" Wen Chu reached out to grab it, but Lu Ming ducked to avoid her. The crowd was already dense, and their commotion would likely bump into other tourists. But Wen Chu kept apologizing while still trying to run to the other side to see what the person was holding.
To prevent a stampede from happening because of them, Lu Ming finally gave in and took the things in his hands.
It was a small bunch of red roses.
Wen Chu was stunned when she saw this.
Lu Ming replied truthfully, "The park is about to close, and the old lady couldn't sell her flowers, so she gave them to me."
Wen Chu snatched the flowers from his hand; the rose petals were still glistening with dew, looking delicate and vibrant. She looked at him, blinked slowly, and asked, "Did you pay me?"
"Of course we gave it to them, no doubt about it."
"So this is what you bought."
"I just don't like taking advantage of others."
"Then it counts as something you bought." The roses didn't have a special scent, but they were pretty enough. Wen Chu held the flowers in her hand, curved her lips into a smile, and waved them in front of Lu Ming. "Do you want to take them back from me now?"
Lu Ming looked away. "There's no need for that."
"Then I'll reluctantly accept this as an apology from you."
"What crime have I committed?"
"See, you admit that you bought this as a gift for me."
Lu Ming couldn't argue with her, so he gave up. He lifted his backpack up a bit, glanced at her sideways, and reminded her, "The ice cream will melt if you don't eat it soon."
Wen Chu scooped a spoonful of ice cream into her mouth and asked, "Then why did you buy me ice cream?"
Lu Ming frowned: "Where do you get so many questions? Eat it if you want, or throw it away if you don't."
They returned to the car, where Lu Ming placed his backpack on the back seat. Wen Chu sat in the passenger seat, eating spoonful by spoonful, with roses placed on her lap, their beauty complementing each other.
"Sigh, that's it for today." She leaned back in her chair, tilted her head to look at Lu Ming, and joked, "Will you still remember tomorrow?"
Lu Ming tightened his grip on the steering wheel; he would have to go to the hospital to have his brain checked tomorrow.
He reviewed everything that happened that day in his mind and didn't feel like he had missed anything. He could remember accurately everything that happened at every point in time, including when they got off the roller coaster, when they went to the toilet to throw up, and when they went to the haunted house.
"What will happen if you don't remember?" he asked softly, looking at the road ahead.
Wen Chu placed the empty box on the dashboard and stretched her limbs: "Not very good. I accept the fact that you're forgetful."
The receding trees and dim streetlights made the asphalt road seem even quieter. Patches of light swept across Wen Chu's face as she leaned against the windowpane, blinking as she looked at the man's profile in the reflection.
After a while, she turned around and asked, "Why did you come back to find me? You left so confidently outside."
"Who exactly was the one who stubbornly walked away without looking back?" Lu Ming felt a bit annoyed when he thought about this.
Forty minutes ago, this woman sped forward like a suddenly lit bomb, as nimble as an eel. He had too many things in his hands to grab her, and his path was blocked by people in front of him, slowing him down. Just as he was about to catch up, two girls stopped him and asked for his contact information. Lu Ming looked up to say that his girlfriend was nearby, but he saw the woman in the distance turn her head, her gaze seemingly sweeping over him, and then! She walked even faster!
They completely disregarded whether he lived or died.
After he rejected both girls, he disappeared without a trace.
The woman was still speaking with a straight face: "How could I not turn around? If I had turned around, you would have disappeared!"
Lu Ming was utterly speechless. When they encountered a red light, he stopped, turned to the side, placed his hand on the steering wheel, looked at her, and asked, "Tell me, are you sure I was really gone when you turned around?"
"..." Wen Chu's momentum weakened a bit. She thought about it carefully and realized that she hadn't seen it in her field of vision, but her glance was too hasty, so she wasn't very sure.
Anyway... I didn't see you.
“But I saw you.” Lu Mingzheng turned around and continued driving.
"..."
After clearing up the misunderstanding, Wen Chu chose to remain silent.
As they approached the apartment building, Wen Chu turned around, took her bag from the back seat, and put it on her lap. She then took out the little devil she had drawn, food, masks, and other items from it. She then glanced at the person in the driver's seat, who was looking in the rearview mirror while reversing and didn't have time to look at her.
She got off the car carrying a bunch of trinkets and returned the bag to Lu Ming.
Seeing that the lights on the second and third floors of her house were on, it was clear that the power had been restored. Therefore, she had no reason to stay at the other person's house any longer. Before leaving, she saw Lu Ming take the grumpy rabbit figurine out of his bag and check it for any damage.
Seeing that she still seemed a little attached, Wen Chu said, "How about I give you mine, and you give me this rabbit? How about we exchange gifts?"
Lu Ming decisively refused: "No."
Even a second's delay is a sign of respect for her artwork.
"What are you doing! This is still viewable, okay? It's actually quite cute, isn't it?!"
"You're starting to doubt yourself. I want this one, no trades." Lu Ming held the bag, hugging the rabbit in his arms tighter, his eyes showing a hint of wariness, as if afraid the person in front of him might try to steal his things at any moment.
"What kind of look is that? Do you think I would steal your things in broad daylight? Is that all the integrity I have?" Wen Chu glared angrily.
"I'm even afraid you'll come to my house and steal from me."
"You... fine, fine! You'll regret this! This earth-shattering masterpiece of mine is something that ordinary people can't get their hands on."
"Then you can keep it." Lu Ming closed the car door and urged her, "Go back and get some rest."
Wen Chu's eyes were almost overflowing with resentment. Regardless, with the mission almost complete, she was determined to secretly take the drawing as a souvenir.
"goodbye!"
She was carrying her things and walking home, but when she was almost at the door, she turned back and called out to the person who was about to push the door open: "Hey, wait a minute."
