Chapter 62. Wen Chu, see you tomorrow.
Wen Chu let out a soft hum like a cat, her face contorted in a mournful expression. She put a cushion under her chest, lay on the sofa, and while thinking of a solution, replied to Lu Ming's text message.
It's already Wednesday, tomorrow is Thursday, and the weekend is almost here. If she still can't help someone break through, she'll have to start all over again.
With her backside in a bind, she had no choice but to act quickly. She had thought that winning the competition would surely boost Lu Ming's favorability towards her, but to her surprise, the system still hadn't sent any message that her favorability was nearing its critical value.
Does this guy not eat anything, only accept kissing and sex? That's so tacky!
Lu Ming ate his meal alone, feeling listless. He stared at the chat box that was constantly typing, unable to figure out what was going on, and dared not send any more messages for fear that the other party's phone would be confiscated.
He is very confused now.
Until a new text message popped up in the chat box.
Chu: [I can't go back. I just got criticized and denounced. My dad told me to stay home for the next few days and not go anywhere. [crying][crying] Please eat a few more bowls of Aunt Sun's cooking for me. Don't miss me, okay? I'll think of something else!]
Lu Ming sighed, not surprised.
He probably knew what Chairman Wen meant.
When Wen Chu saw the three words "I understand" sent by Lu Ming, she felt a nameless anger rise in her heart. Did this damned man really have no heart? He only sent these three words? So she suffers all the blame while he takes all the benefits?
She was so angry that she ate two extra bowls of rice at the dinner table—she discovered that the dishes cooked by the housekeeper were also very delicious.
Seeing that Wen Chu was eating silently and not saying a word, Wen Shiyang assumed that Wen Chu was angry with him, but he still said firmly, "No matter what you say, it's no use. I need him to give me an answer this time."
"Huh?" Wen Chu looked up and gave an awkward smile. "Even if you want it, he might not give it to you. Because... I asked to participate, and he didn't want to agree at first."
She was mostly focused on completing her task and earning the reward, and this time the reward was quite good, so she was very satisfied and didn't care about anything else.
Wen Shiyang snorted, "Anyway, you just stay home and don't contact him. If I find out, I'll cancel all your cards!"
Wen Chu didn't take it seriously.
Seeing that this posed no threat, Wen Shiyang added, "He will be confined for another month!"
Wen Chu behaved herself this time.
After finishing my meal, I obediently handed over my phone and went back to my room to watch TV.
The night is as cool as water.
Lu Ming leaned against the headboard, one hand on his knee, gazing intently at the painting of a forest girl directly opposite him.
The painting had been sitting there quietly for a long time; he bought it by chance.
The girl in the painting is wearing a white dress, and there is only a blurry, slender back view. She is looking up at the green leaves and the sunlight shining through the gaps in the leaves.
When he first saw this painting, the girl's pure white silhouette reminded him of Wen Xue. But now, gazing at the painting again, he found that the person in his mind was no longer her, but gradually overlapped with the silhouette of another girl.
His memories of Wen Xue grew increasingly hazy; he seemed to have forgotten their time together in college and the crush he had once held so dear. Instead, Wen Chu's image became more and more vivid in his mind, gradually taking over all his feelings outside of work.
So much so that even though they had only been apart for a few hours, he already felt a little missing her.
He turned his head to look at the photo of him and Wen Xue from their university days that he always kept on his bedside table; it was four years ago.
In fact, he had barely noticed the existence of the photo frame during this period. The frame had been gradually pushed to the edge by various things, blocking the two people in the picture, and some dust had accumulated.
Lu Ming picked up the photo frame and held it in his palm, gazing at it for a long time. The girl in the frame had a beautiful smile, but what she looked like now was unknown. And he seemed no longer to be moved by such a smile.
Putting aside the persistent obsession in his mind, to be honest, when he looked at her, it was as if he were looking at a complete stranger, unable to stir even the slightest ripple in his heart.
On the contrary, the plaster doll placed on the bedside table always brought him a sense of pleasure, as if his heart was being enveloped and cleansed by a layer of warm milk.
The brain can be controlled by many factors, creating illusions, but the sensations transmitted from the heart cannot lie.
He has always resisted admitting that his supposedly sincere and passionate love could be defeated by time, that he could be moved by the appearance of another person, and that he was a fickle and unfaithful person, but that was the truth.
Every day Wen Chu appeared by his side, he reminded himself countless times to stay clear-headed, but his heart would not stop moving forward because of his will.
As if he had finally come to terms with his own feelings, Lu Ming picked up the photo frame and threw it into the trash can next to the bed without any hesitation.
Then, somewhat childishly, he picked up the grumpy rabbit, pinched its pink, curved ears, and hugged it to his chest.
He was the one who was deceiving himself.
He then took out the notebook containing the names of important people from the drawer, opened it to the first page, and solemnly crossed out the first name listed.
Turning two more pages, he saw Wen Chu's name.
Even now, he still can't remember which night it was that he wrote down the other person's name and drew a five-pointed star in front of it, or what that five-pointed star meant.
But Lu Ming at that moment was probably much more honest than he is now.
Perhaps he had already recognized his true feelings at some point, but the stubborn Lu Ming denied it the next moment.
Lu Ming always felt like he was forgetting something, but it didn't matter; he would give this five-pointed star new meaning. His hand unconsciously caressed the name, the name that, once recalled, felt like a warm, comforting embrace in his heart.
Lu Ming turned to the last page of his notebook and silently wrote down Wen Chu's preferences and eating habits, as well as the things that had happened between them. He also noted down her ring size, neck width, and wrist circumference.
He added at the end: "I really like ugly things."
He pulled a small yellow duck keychain from under his pillow. It was one of the prizes Wen Chu won in the ring toss game outside the amusement park. The workmanship was very rough, but the other person said it was very cute.
Someone had originally pranked him by hanging it on his hastily bought travel bag, but since he didn't use the bag often, Lu Ming had no choice but to take it off and put it under his pillow. Occasionally, if he accidentally rolled onto it while sleeping, it would suddenly make a sound, startling him.
He gave it a gentle squeeze, and the little yellow duck chirped in a hoarse voice, "I love you~ Quack—"
"I love you~ Gaa—"
Lu Ming couldn't help but chuckle softly.
Wen Chu, see you tomorrow.
