Chapter 177: A tragic accident

Ivy’s eyes widened in horror, the realization of Zack’s calculated plan sending chills down her spine. At that moment, she clung to the desperate hope that the cops might still save her from this nightmare. She scrambled to her feet, ignoring the searing pain in her leg, and took off running. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

This time, Zack didn’t chase after her. Instead, he calmly pulled out his phone and dialed the police station. When the call connected, he spoke with feigned urgency. "I just saw Ivy Hill in the deserted lane near downtown. You need to hurry."

A smug smile crossed his face as he ended the call, satisfied with his deception. He walked back to his car, started the engine, and began following Ivy at a slow, menacing pace, savoring the fear he knew was coursing through her.

Ivy glanced back over her shoulder and saw the headlights of Zack’s car closing in on her. Panic surged through her, and she forced herself to run faster, despite the burning pain in her lungs and the aching in her legs.

Every breath felt like fire, but she didn’t dare stop. The only thought in her mind was to escape this dark, desolate lane and find someone—anyone—who could help her.

As she sprinted ahead, she spotted the glow of lights in the distance. Hope surged within her, a small flicker of light in the overwhelming darkness. If she could just reach the end of the lane, she might find safety or at least someone who could help her get away from Zack.

Fueled by a surge of adrenaline, Ivy pushed herself harder, her legs pumping as fast as they could carry her. The lights grew brighter with each step, and the thought of reaching safety kept her going, even as exhaustion threatened to overwhelm her.

Zack pursued Ivy with unrelenting determination, keeping just enough distance to push her deeper into a panic. The roar of his car engine behind her constantly reminded her that the danger was closing in. Desperation clouded Ivy’s mind as she darted across the lane, her instincts urging her to escape at any cost.

In her frantic dash, she failed to notice a car speeding toward her from the right. Her eyes widened in terror as the blinding headlights bore down on her. Momentum carried her forward, and before she could even attempt to stop, she was struck.

The impact sent her body flying through the air, flailing helplessly before crashing down to the asphalt like a ragdoll. Agonizing pain erupted throughout her body, seizing her breath. Her head throbbed, and every nerve screamed in torment as she lay trembling on the cold ground, gasping for air.

From the shadows of the lane, Zack watched with cold detachment, his car’s headlights now switched off. As he observed Ivy’s bloodied and broken body lying motionless on the road, a twisted sense of satisfaction washed over him. He felt no pity, no remorse—only a grim contentment that Ivy’s fate had been sealed.

The road soon turned into a chaos. Car horns blared, and shouts of alarm filled the air as people rushed to the scene. Bystanders gathered around Ivy, their faces etched with shock and horror as they realized there was little they could do to save her. Some called for help, while others simply stared, paralyzed by the gruesome sight before them.

Zack slowly backed his car out of the dark lane and drove away, disappearing into the night without a trace.

Meanwhile, in the police van, the two officers jolted awake, the effects of the sedative finally wearing off. They glanced around in confusion, quickly realizing that Ivy was no longer in the vehicle. Panic set in as they noticed their other companion slumped over the steering wheel, seemingly unconscious.

"Hey, wake up," the head officer said urgently, shaking the driver’s shoulder. "Where is the woman?"

The driver stirred, blinking groggily as he pretended to wake from a deep sleep. In reality, he hadn’t drunk the water at all. He had only pretended to be knocked out, playing his part in Zack’s plan.

He looked around, feigning confusion. "I—I don’t know," he stammered, rubbing his eyes as if to clear his head. "I just fell asleep after drinking the water. She must have escaped while we were out."

The two policemen also realized they had drunk water and fell asleep.

"It’s her," the officer said, feeling aggrieved. "She might have added something with the water sneakily."

"You’re right," his subordinate agreed, clenching his jaw in anger. "She asked for water. She might have slipped something into it at the time."

As they were discussing the woman’s possible actions, a message crackled over the radio, informing them of a fatal accident in the downtown area. The victim was identified as Ivy Hill.

The officer and his subordinate exchanged a stunned glance. They couldn’t believe that Ivy was already dead.

"What a twist of fate," the officer muttered with a sense of irony. "She tried to escape us, but it ended up costing her life. Let’s go there." He signaled the driver to put the vehicle in motion.

The driver, still pretending to be as surprised as the officers, nodded and started the engine. The van pulled away from the darkened street, heading toward the scene of the accident.

The next day...

The news of Ivy’s death reached Theodore.

"What a tragic end!" His initial reaction was one of pity, a fleeting moment of sympathy for her tragic end. However, Tristan’s revelation about her actions quickly shattered any compassion.

"Yes, it’s a shocking turn of events," Tristan said. "But what she did is quite shocking. To escape the police, she drugged them. Once they fell asleep, she ran away."

"That cunning bitch!" Theodore muttered under his breath with contempt. "She had gone to such lengths to evade the law, even resorting to drugging the cops. She was truly a conniving woman."

"She tried to get away, but she didn’t know the death was lurking just around the corner," Tristan said scornfully.

Theodore lost his interest in talking about her. "What’s the latest on the Hill Group?" he asked, abruptly changing the subject.

"The company is on the brink of bankruptcy," Tristan reported. "Mr. Hill is facing charges of tax evasion and will soon be behind bars. His debts are astronomical, and his properties will be auctioned off to settle them."

Theodore nodded, his mind already racing with anticipation. "I’d like to take a closer look at his properties. Tell Skyler to meet me in my cabin. You can leave now."

Tristan nodded and left.
