The inn was cozy, and the bed was large and comfortable. But Gunu remained restless all night.
He tossed and turned until dawn, but the Emperor of the Song Dynasty seemed to have no intention of summoning him. Finally, unable to bear it any longer, Gu Nu left the post station and went to the Nanjing government office to see the Emperor, but was turned away.
The guard at the door said that 20,000 dan of grain and fodder had been shipped from Bianjing, and His Majesty is busy distributing them to the troops and has no time to deal with you.
Gu Nu was even more panicked. 20,000 dan of military rations. The dog emperor was going to fight a long battle. Maybe he would attack Shangjing Huining Prefecture and take over the capital of the Great Jin.
The more Gu Nu thought about it, the more anxious he became. However, when he went to see the emperor, he was turned away by the guards. When he returned to the post station, he lost his appetite, couldn't sleep, and couldn't eat or drink.
On the third day, Gu Nu could no longer bear it. If nothing works, we should just go home. The emperor won't see us.
While he was thinking about it, the postman from the post station came over.
This postal envoy was transferred from the Imperial Guard after the capture of Nanjing Prefecture. His name was Cao Dongsheng. Yes, that bastard Cao Dongsheng.
Of course, this postal envoy was a fake, but he was appointed by Zhao Huan himself.
Gu Nu sat at the table sighing, and Cao Dongsheng came over and poured him a pot of tea. He was best at serving people.
"Why is the envoy so upset?"
Since arriving, Gu Nu had been deliberately ignored. Seeing someone actively approaching him, he felt like meeting an old friend in a foreign land. He immediately poured out all his grievances, almost bursting into tears.
Cao Dongsheng sighed after hearing this and sat down next to him. "Your Excellency, you don't know. You, the Great Jin, have indeed gone too far. We originally had a peaceful alliance between our two families, the Huining Alliance. Look at what you've done. First you attacked Cangzhou, then Baozhou, and even tried to rob food supplies. Weren't you the one who instigated all this?"
Ba Gu Nu sighed: "All the generals in the court want to go to war, and my lord has no choice."
Cao Dongsheng slapped his thigh and said, "Yes, our Great Song Emperor also doesn't want to fight, but he is forced by his ministers and has no choice. I guess your inability to enter the Nanjing government office may not be the Emperor's intention."
"What does Lord Cao mean?"
Cao Dongsheng said mysteriously: "He was probably stopped by a general."
Ba Gu Nu was slightly surprised when he heard this: "What should we do? Doesn't your emperor want to fight too?"
"What do you think? The Emperor is the true Son of Heaven. Who doesn't want a peaceful and prosperous world? Have you heard about the time when our Emperor was scolded by his ministers for being late for court after sleeping in his bed?"
Gu Nu shook his head. "I don't know about that, but it happened to our emperor too. He got spanked by Marshal Zong Han just for secretly drinking a little."
Cao Dongsheng was secretly amused by this. He immediately advised, "It's not our emperor who wants to fight, it's the generals and ministers. It's understandable that you haven't seen our emperor these past few days."
"Alas, I have no choice but to go back tomorrow." Ba Gu Nu sighed repeatedly.
"Report! Lord Cao, there's a report from the capital." A soldier shouted in the outer room.
Cao Dongsheng smiled and said, "Your Excellency, please rest a moment. I have something to do."
Cao Dongsheng waved Gu Nu's hand and retreated.
Cao Dongsheng took the letter from the soldier, opened it, read it, and was about to put it away when someone outside called out, "Master Cao, someone is coming from the capital."
Cao Dongsheng hurriedly put the letter in a drawer next to him, straightened his clothes and went out to meet him.
All of this was observed quietly by Gu Nu. After Cao Dongsheng left, Gu Nu quietly slipped into the outer hall. Seeing no one around, he gently opened the drawer and unfolded the letter.
Gu Nu's face changed drastically when he saw the letter. It was the list of military expenses for next month sent by the Ministry of Revenue. It clearly stated below that the balance of the national treasury was as much as 7 million taels.
"Hahaha..." Cao Dongsheng's shrill laughter was heard outside. Gu Nu hurriedly put the letter back as it was and slipped into the inner room.
Cao Dongsheng just walked in, beaming: "The envoy is very happy, very happy."
Gu Nu looked bewildered: "Master Cao, where does this joy come from?"
Cao Dongsheng patted him on the shoulder and said, "A letter just arrived from the capital. I was about to deliver it to the Nanjing government office and mail it to the emperor. The guards won't let you in, right? Come with me, and I'll say you're from the post office. That way you can see the emperor, and the envoy can discuss peace talks with him."
Ba Gu Nu was overjoyed when he heard this. He stood up and bowed deeply: "Thank you for your help, Lord Cao."
Cao Dongsheng smiled and patted him: "You're welcome, you're welcome."
Gu Nu changed into the uniform of a Song Dynasty soldier and followed Cao Dongsheng into the Nanjing government office smoothly.
As soon as I arrived at the courtyard gate, I heard a quarrel inside the mansion.
"Bullshit! I said we can negotiate with Jin, so why aren't the envoys from Jin coming?" This was Zhao Huan's voice.
A gruff voice said, "Your Majesty, the Jin envoy has been so insolent and disrespectful that we must not negotiate with him again."
Another general, with a resounding voice, echoed: "Yes, Your Majesty! The Huining Alliance is a lesson for us. The Jin people are untrustworthy. Your Majesty must never listen to their deception again."
"Bullshit! Don't try to hide this from me. You must be the ones who didn't allow the Jin envoy to see me. You don't want to negotiate, you just want to go to war with Jin!"
The gruff voice continued, "Your Majesty, we risked our lives to advise you. It was you who stopped the Jin envoy outside the palace. Right now, food and fodder are plentiful, and the treasury is well-stocked. We can march into Shangjing in one swoop and destroy the Jin!"
"Yes, Your Majesty, please grant me your permission!"
"Your Majesty, please grant me your permission!" the generals shouted.
Gu Nu was terrified when he heard this outside. These generals seemed to be planning a war.
