Surrounded by generals in the tent, Kublai Khan sat in the middle. He had a strong body, a flat face, and small but bright eyes.
"Dalandai, I told you that the easier things seem, the more dangerous they are. Chishushanxia deliberately led you into his ambush. Did I warn you not to cross the Onon River when chasing Chishushanxia?" Hebule said lightly.
Yu Bu Tong was secretly shocked. This Hebule was really powerful. He was truly a natural genius in fighting. He knew there was an ambush just by his judgment.
The general's name was Dalantai. He was shocked and said, "Great Khan, you are truly formidable. It was this brave man who saved us. Without him, we would never be able to drink the water of the Onon River again."
Hebule then noticed Yu Bu Tong and walked up to him and said, "Who are you? You are not one of us Mongols."
Yu Bu Tong pulled out a document from his bosom. It was a letter of alliance written by Zhao Huan to Hebule, stamped with the imperial seal. Fortunately, he had hidden it close to his body, so it was not discovered when he was captured by the Tatars.
"Respected Khan, my name is Yu Bu Tong. I am an envoy of the Song Dynasty. I have come here on the orders of our emperor to form an alliance with the Khan." Yu Bu Tong said.
All the generals were shocked when these words came out. Only Hebule remained calm. He looked at Yu Bu Tong and said, "Alliance? We, the Mongol Empire, are eagles on the grasslands, and you, the Song Dynasty, are tigers on the plains. Eagles soar in the sky, while tigers roam the mountains and forests. We are separated by thousands of mountains and rivers, and we don't even drink from the same river. How can we form an alliance?"
Yu Bu Tong bowed and said, "Respected Khan, even eagles sometimes land to rest, and the water of the Onon River flows to the four seas. We in the Great Song have a saying that all people in the world are brothers. We are one family."
Hebule laughed heartily and returned to his Khanate: "You southerner are very good at talking. Why don't you tell me how we can form an alliance?"
Yu Bu Tong said, "The Great Jin from the forest are a pack of jackals. They want to divide Xixia with you, a group of eagles. But the Xixia princess has already married our emperor. How can we watch Xixia being divided up by you?"
Hebule slammed his chair and said, "So you're here to call for justice! Do you want to join forces with Xixia?"
Yu Bu Tong raised his head and said, "That's right. We in the Great Song Dynasty have countless soldiers. A tiger will not allow the jackals around it to bully the weak sheep."
Hebule laughed and said, "I don't think Xixia is a sheep. He is trying to confuse you, the tiger. Even if you join forces with Xixia, we, the Mongols, have decided to fight you. This Khan wants to see which is more formidable, the eagle in the sky or the tiger in the forest."
Yu Bu Tong bowed again and said, "Respected Khan, our Majesty admires your majesty, so how could we go to war with you? We want the Song Dynasty, the Western Xia Dynasty, and the Mongols to join forces and defeat the jackal Jin. The head of the wolf will belong to the Song Dynasty, the body to the Western Xia Dynasty, and the tail and legs to you, the eagles of the grasslands."
"Well," Hebule said, clearly feeling a bit moved, "but why do I only see your Song Dynasty envoys? Where are the Xixia envoys?"
Yu Bu Tong then told how he had been sent as an envoy to Western Xia and how the envoy from Western Xia had been captured by the Tatar tribe.
Hebule was furious: "One day I will defeat the Tatars and avenge you!"
Yu Bu Tong continued, "If you join forces with the jackals, are you sure you can defeat this tiger in the mountains? But if the tiger and the eagle join forces, plus the Xixia, they can easily devour the jackal. Khan, think again, the Great Jin is a jackal that can never be satisfied. They have deployed 100,000 troops on the Jin-Mongol border, all in the hope of eating the fat piece of meat of the Mongol Kingdom. Do you still want to continue to be bullied by these jackals?"
…
That night, Hebule held a grand banquet and invited Yu Bu Tong to be the chief guest.
At the banquet, the Mongolian soldiers showed great respect to Yu Bu Tong. After weighing the pros and cons, no one could refuse someone who could bring them benefits. Hebula had decided to form an alliance with Song and Xia.
"Sir Yu, you are our friend. Friends should drink this bowl of kumis." Hebule patted Yu Bu Tong and said enthusiastically.
Yu Bu Tong raised his wine bowl and said, "The Khan's love is as deep as the mountains and as long as the rivers. Our friendship will last forever. Drink!"
Yu Bu Tong was drunk and was helped back to the yurt. He was so drunk that he was unconscious.
After sending Yu Bu Tong away, Hebule's face darkened. The general next to him, Dalantai, asked, "Great Khan, are we really joining forces with Song and Xia?"
Hebule pondered for a moment and said, "Promise them that we can first see if Songxia can resist the Jin Dynasty. If the Jin Dynasty can't beat them, we will come and share a piece of the pie. If Songxia can't beat the Jin Dynasty, we will join forces with the Jin people."
Dalantai gave a thumbs up and said, "Great Khan, you are wise!"
Yu Bu Tong, unconscious and drunk, was sent back to his tent by the soldiers. After the soldiers left, Yu Bu Tong opened his eyes and he didn't look drunk at all.
After Hebule finished discussing with the generals and soldiers, they dispersed to rest.
Hebule returned to his private yurt, where his wife Hujia was.
"Khan, the envoy from the Song Dynasty outside wants to see you." A soldier rushed in.
Hebule was startled: "What is he doing here again? Isn't he drunk?"
"Khan, he said he wanted to give you a gift," said the soldier.
Hebule thought for a moment and said, "Please ask him to come in."
Yu Bu Tong broke into the yurt, and Hu Jiaya poured him a cup of milk tea. Yu Bu Tong bowed to express his gratitude.
Yu Bu Tong walked over and sat down opposite Hebule. "Great Khan, there are many things I cannot say openly in front of your soldiers, so I have to come and bother you privately."
Hebule's eyes were like torches: "You are not an ordinary person. The fact that your Great Song Emperor sent you here shows that your Emperor is not an ordinary person either. Just tell me what you want to say."
