Chapter 34: The Scholar's Down-and-Out Bun Shop

The bun shop owner was a kindhearted man. He sighed, took out two buns from the drawer and handed them over: "Eat them."

Scholars are well-mannered. Even though he was starving, Du Yuntai didn't even say "thank you". He took the bun and ate it in two or three bites.

The bun shop owner lifted the steamer basket and said, "Sorry, these are the only two buns I have today. Otherwise, I would have given you a few more."

Du Yuntai bowed to the ground and said, "Thank you very much for your gift, shopkeeper. I will never forget it."

The bun shop owner was stunned: "Are you a scholar?"

Du Yuntai felt a little ashamed of this sentence. He also felt that he was bringing shame to the scholars, but he still smiled and nodded.

The bun shop owner said, "Why don't you go to the inn and make friends with the students? They recite poems and write couplets and comment on worldly affairs every night in Fanlou. If they take a fancy to you, not only will they provide you with a few buns, but they will also provide you with food and lodging."

Du Yuntai shook his head: "I am not very knowledgeable and talented, I am no match for them."

The bun shop owner stopped talking and started packing up his stall.

Du Yuntai hurriedly took out a piece of paper and pen from the bag on his back and said, "Thank you very much for the food, shopkeeper. I have no way to repay you, so I will write a poem for you."

The bun shop owner smiled and said, "Thank you very much, sir. No one has written a poem for our shop yet. We don't understand it either. Your poems are very timely. I will find someone to frame them and hang them on this wall right away." As he said that, he pointed to the main wall of his shop.

Du Yuntai spread out his paper and brush and wrote the poem.

Put down the chopsticks and rub the belly, then call the child to break the small ball.

Still better than the old man from Longxi, who looks up to the gardener for vegetables.

Note: This poem was written by Lu You, but in this book it was written by Du Yuntai.
