It wasn't that the Mongolian cavalry couldn't fight, the Batwu were just a third-rate cavalry unit. What they encountered was the first-rate cavalry of the Song Dynasty, or even a super-first-rate cavalry unit.
The Iron Wolf Army has the most advanced equipment in the Song Dynasty. Every soldier has been carefully selected through layers of assessments, and even the fast horses used by the cavalry are picked from dozens of horses.
Zhu Qing on this side jumped up and down: "Crazy Kong, I'm going to chop you up!"
The lieutenant general beside him said, "Wolf Head, Confucius has won. Look, the Mongolian soldiers have been driven into the Wild Wolf Valley. Isn't this a good opportunity for us to catch them in a trap?"
"Stupid!" Zhu Qing said angrily, "Do you think I'm only interested in these six or seven hundred Mongolian soldiers? Where's Crazy Kong? Tie up Crazy Kong and bring him to me!"
Confucius was commanding from the entrance to the Wild Wolf Valley: "Stop chasing them! Block them! Remember, fence off both sides of the Wild Wolf Valley, including this entrance and exit. If any of the Mongolian soldiers dare to charge out, shoot them to death!"
"Confucius!" Zhu Qing's face turned ashen, and he rushed over on horseback with his men in a menacing manner.
Confucius didn't feel anything. He just said to his men, "It's over, it's over. We're going to get scolded."
When Zhu Qing rode closer, Confucius hurriedly dismounted and went to meet him: "Wolf Head, hey, hey, I've driven all the Mongolian soldiers in. Like a flock of sheep, they've all been driven into the Wild Wolf Valley."
Zhu Qing said coldly: "Who told you to disobey orders without authorization!"
Confucius secretly thought that it was not good: "That, that was my order. Wolf Head, this means that not a single Mongolian soldier can escape. I have disregarded military discipline and I am willing to accept the punishment!"
"Tie him up, drag him out and chop him up!" Zhu Qing shouted.
Everyone was startled, filled with fear. Wolf Head always kept his promises, and this Confucius was in great danger.
The people around hurriedly tried to dissuade him. A lieutenant general said, "Wolf Head, although Confucius disobeyed orders on the battlefield, he won a battle and drove the enemy into Gu Zheng. Please spare his life for his meritorious service and give him a beating with a military stick."
"Please show mercy, Wolf Head!" Everyone tried to dissuade him.
"Cut it off!" Zhu Qing didn't give any face at all: "There's nothing wrong with disobeying orders on the battlefield. We must obey orders and enforce discipline. This is the Iron Wolf Army!"
No one dared to dissuade him anymore, and Confucius stopped begging for mercy. He looked at Zhu Qing angrily, but Zhu Qing ignored him and said, "Drag him away!"
Everyone had an expression of resentment on their face, but they all feared the Wolf Head's majesty. Especially the soldiers of the Blue Wolf Second Regiment, who didn't feel a single ounce of joy at their victory.
The execution squad took Confucius to a forest, where they tied him up and pressed him to the ground.
Confucius closed his eyes and waited for death.
"Ready!" Someone from the firing squad raised his sword.
Confucius' eyes went dark, and when he opened them he saw a man standing in front of him, Zhu Qing.
Zhu Qing said coldly: "Do you feel that your death was unjust?"
Confucius nodded stubbornly: "I will win the battle."
"Humph," Zhu Qing sneered, "You won? You have a thousand men against a Mongol cavalry force of only three or four hundred men, and you still have the nerve to call it a victory?"
Confucius still refused to accept the result: "But if Wolf Head intercepted them in the middle, those three or four hundred people would have escaped."
Zhu Qing bent down and stared at him. For some reason, Confucius didn't dare to meet his eyes.
"Run away? That's good. I just want them to run away." Zhu Qing said.
Confucius was stunned for a moment, then looked up at him in confusion.
"Do you think this general has put in so much effort just for these six or seven hundred Mongolian soldiers? Han Shizhong can easily defeat this army by just pulling out any troop. What is the purpose of establishing the Iron Wolf Army? To fight the most difficult battles, the most challenging battles! Are the hundreds of people in the Wild Wolf Valley difficult? Answer me!" Zhu Qing's tone became stern.
Confucius vaguely felt that he had done something wrong, so he answered in a low voice: "No, it's not difficult to fight."
Zhu Qing sighed. "This Mongolian force is just a detachment of Quanzhou Gert. You drove them all into the Wild Wolf Valley without leaving a single one behind. Who will report this to Gert? If no one reports this to Gert, how will Gert's reinforcements arrive? If Gert's reinforcements don't arrive, how can we defeat their ambush?"
The series of question marks made Confucius tremble with fear. He swallowed hard, his tone a little hoarse: "So, it turns out that Wolf Head wanted to use this team to lure out the Mongolian army from Quanzhou. I was wrong. You can do it now."
Zhu Qing took the knife from the executioner and placed the blade on Confucius' neck: "Can killing you make amends? Do you know how big a mistake you have made?"
Confucius was so ashamed that he knelt there motionless.
Zhu Qing put away the knife in his hand and said, "Remember, you owe me a life!" Then he threw away the knife and walked away.
Having saved his life, Confucius still couldn't believe his eyes. He was completely impressed by the young general before him. From then on, he became Zhu Qing's die-hard fan.
Wild Wolf Valley was completely surrounded by the Iron Wolf Army, making it an ideal location for an ambush. The mountains were steep, and cavalry could not escape except at the entrances and exits. A single Blue Wolf Regiment was sufficient to deal with the Mongolian soldiers at the bottom of the valley.
Zhu Qing was stationed at the entrance of Wild Wolf Valley, surrounded by his generals. They were all pondering the same question: how to deliberately release some of the Mongolian cavalry and send them back to report the news.
"Everyone, use your brains. Is there any way we can make the Mongolian soldiers think that we are lax in our defense without leaving any trace? The commander of Quanzhou, Gert, uses his troops cautiously. We must not let them suspect that we deliberately let them go, otherwise Gert will definitely know that we will ambush him." Zhu Qing looked at everyone and said.
Everyone sighed, no one coming up with a good idea. If they deliberately let the Mongolian soldiers in the valley escape and report back, Gert, with his intelligence, would surely know that this was a bait set by the Song army, hoping to get him to rush to their aid and then ambush him halfway.
"Mee, mee..." The bleating of sheep attracted everyone's attention. An old shepherd man wearing a white turban drove a dozen sheep to the entrance of the Wild Wolf Valley.
The old man was so frightened when he saw the black mass of Song cavalry that he was stunned. It was obvious that he had not expected that there would be an army in this place.
When a scholar meets a soldier, he is confused. Moreover, he is just an old shepherd. If he turns around and tries to escape, his dozen or so sheep might be in danger.
"Catch him!" Zhu Qing shouted.
Several Song soldiers rode past, and the old man was so scared that he covered his face with his whip.
"Come back with us!" a Song soldier shouted, and the old man had no choice but to follow him and came to Zhu Qing.
As expected, Zhu Qing said, "We want all of your dozen sheep."
