Chapter 23: A locust plague that covered the sky and the sun

Zhan Erqi laughed heartily: "Weak Song people, you are afraid of the Mongol cavalry and dare not come out to fight."

Han Shizhong held back his anger and said, "Listen, Mongols. Fenzhou is the territory of the Great Song Dynasty. This is your last warning. If you don't withdraw your troops, we will go to war!"

Zhan Erqi waved his whip and pointed at Han Shizhong on the city wall: "I heard that you Song Dynasty has a kind of cannon. We want to see it. If you have the guts, take it out and try it out."

Han Shizhong hid the cannons on the city walls and would not let the Mongols know the power of the cannons unless in an emergency.

No matter how much he shouted and cursed, the Song army in Fenzhou City refused to pay any attention, which made Zhan Erqi feel very bored. He had planned to find an excuse to capture Fenzhou City. Once Fenzhou was captured, Taiyuan of the Song Dynasty would be in danger.

At this time, several people were carrying bags and pushing wooden carts along the path towards Fenzhou City. These were suburban residents outside the city, and they came into the city to do some trade.

When a dozen soldiers under Zan Erqi saw the civilians, they shouted and spurred their horses and rushed over.

The people panicked, abandoned their wooden carts and ran into the city.

The dozen or so Mongolian soldiers laughed heartily and came to the wooden cart. One soldier opened the tarpaulin on the cart and saw that it was full of fresh vegetables.

A cart full of water chestnuts and Chinese cabbages, probably brought by people from the suburbs to sell in the city.

The Mongolian soldiers under the city cheered loudly. They laughed at the people who were fleeing in panic into the city. Two centurions took the bows and arrows on their backs and aimed at the two running people.

Han Shizhong was shocked that the Mongols had ignored the alliance and acted recklessly.

Han Shizhong waved his hand, and the Song army on the city wall unfolded their battle flags and sounded their war drums.

But the Mongolian centurions did not take the Song army on the city seriously at all. As soon as one of the centurions let go, an arrow flew straight with a "whoosh" sound and knocked down a civilian.

Another centurion shot an arrow and killed another civilian.

This caused an uproar, and every Song soldier on the city wall was filled with righteous indignation. The Mongols were too arrogant, they actually dared to shoot and kill Song civilians in front of the Song army.

Zhan Erqi probably felt that it was a bit too much, and he shouted at the two centurions.

Han Shizhong could no longer bear it: "Push out the red cannon!"

Several gunners pushed the red cannon to the firing port on the city wall, adjusted the position, one gunner pounded gunpowder into the barrel, and another gunner loaded the cannonball.

Han Shizhong personally lit the fuse of the torch and aimed the cannon at the location of the two centurions.

The fuse burned with a sizzling sound, and "bang!" a burst of white smoke rose.

The red cannon on the city wall fired a shell with a crackling sound.

The shells tore through the air, and before Zhan Erqi could understand what was happening, there was a loud "boom!" and the area where the two centurions were standing exploded.

The flames dissipated, and the two centurions and a dozen Mongolian soldiers flew into the sky.

With a "whoosh!", a human leg fell from the sky and flew in front of Zhan Erqi.

Zhan Erqi was so frightened that he recognized the leg as the centurion's.

What kind of heaven-defying artifact is this? Zhan Erqi's voice trembled: "Monster, demonic magic! The Song people know demonic magic!"

Han Shizhong ordered the soldiers to recalibrate the artillery, this time aiming at Zan Erqi's location.

Zhan Erqi only saw the black muzzle of the cannon aimed at him. He was already terrified and fled on his horse.

Just as he'd gotten a few dozen steps, a cannonball exploded right where Zhan Erqi had been. Flames shot up into the sky, sand and rocks flew everywhere. Several nearby soldiers, along with their horses, were thrown overboard.

Three soldiers were killed by blast fragments and four or five others were injured.

Zhan Erqi was so panicked that he spurred his horse and fled, throwing his Mongolian soldiers into chaos.

The gates of Fenzhou slowly opened, and Han Shizhong, with a large force of Song cavalry, pursued them for over seventy miles. Zan Erqi's army was so frightened that they fled in panic.

In Maozhou, which is located on the Lin-Huang line, Hebule personally led his army to the outskirts of Maozhou.

Hebule didn't dare to openly provoke them; he simply hunted outside Maozhou. However, he went a little too far, and a group of his personal soldiers arrived not far from Maozhou city.

Yue's army was not so well-prepared. Before the Mongols even reached the city, the Maozhou garrison commander ordered his men to fire their artillery.

Hebule and Dalanta were hunting in the distance when suddenly thunder rumbled from the direction of Maozhou City. Hebule looked back and saw a burst of fire. His own soldiers were instantly blown to pieces and there were many casualties.

Likewise, Hebule was deeply shocked by the scene before him, from shock to anger, and from anger to fear.

Darantai was furious and wanted to charge forward, but Hebule stopped him and shouted, "Retreat!"

Dalantai was still furious: "Dahan."

Hebule said sternly: "Retreat! The entire army should leave Maozhou!"

The Mongolian soldiers were frightened and retreated in panic.

Returning to the camp, Hebule was still in shock: "Pass on Benhan's order. Never provoke the Song Dynasty in the future. Anyone who disobeys will be executed!"

Afterwards, Hebula personally sent an envoy to Yue Fei's camp to seek peace, claiming that the Maozhou incident was a pure misunderstanding.

Yue Fei also said that this was a misunderstanding. He had punished Zhang Xiaowen, the garrison commander of Maozhou, and promised that such incidents would not happen again. However, he also hoped that Hebule Dahan would restrain his troops to prevent such incidents from happening again.

In fact, Maozhou defender Zhang Xiaowen not only did not receive any punishment, but was praised by Yue Fei's entire army.

Hebule beheaded Zan'erqi and sent his head to Bianjing. Hebule expressed his willingness to maintain eternal peace with the Song Dynasty, but anyone who undermined the Song-Mongol alliance would be severely punished.
