Chapter 12: A Slap in the Face

"Shan, Shan'er, why, why are you asking this?"

Seeing that Jiao's mother was pale and at a loss, Jiang Shan quickly stepped forward, took her hand, and coaxed her gently, "Mom! I just wanted to ask what kind of people Uncle Qiao and his family are! I've taken on another order and I'm too busy. If Uncle Qiao and his family are good people, I'd like to invite them to come to our house to help out and pay them monthly wages."

Jiao's mother's expression softened slightly, but she still lowered her head uneasily and said weakly, "I'm afraid it's not appropriate. A man and a woman alone in a room is most likely to attract gossip. Your Uncle Qiao and his family fled from other places. At that time, Asheng had just lost his mother, and the two of them settled in Huaigu Village. I haven't heard of them having any other relatives since."

"As for their character, at least Mother trusts them. Ah Sheng used to often go up the mountain with Erlang, and he has been coming to help out every year. They are all good people."

Hearing Jiao's mother say this, Jiang Shan felt relieved. His eyes lit up and he came up with a plan.

"Mom, I'm going to publicly recruit workers in the village tomorrow. If there are other people who are willing to come and work, please help me screen them. I can hire people with good character, and I'll send those with bad character away!"

"I'll make them work in the front yard, openly and without any concealment, and see what they have to say then!"

Jiao's mother, however, considered things more thoroughly. She asked hesitantly, "If they also learn how to make seafood with a special sauce, wouldn't they be taking away our business?"

Jiang Shan smiled maliciously, "Don't worry, all the easy technical jobs are here with me, and no one can learn them!"

After delivering seafood with gravy to the restaurant that evening, Jiang Shan stayed in his room and busied himself with other tasks.

The next day, Jiang Shan set up a frame at the entrance of the village and posted a job advertisement on it, which read that Jiang's Seafood Hot Pot was recruiting workers and apprentices. Workers would be paid three coins a day, and apprentices would only be provided with two meals a day for the first year. Starting from the second year, they would be paid the wages of workers. Moreover, after an apprentice had worked for a year, he could go out and work as a seafood hot pot chef on his own.

After the literate villager read out the job advertisement, the village erupted in excitement.

At the entrance of the Jiao family's house, Jiang Shan also set up a temporary stall, filled several bamboo bowls with the seafood in gravy he had prepared the night before, prepared many bamboo skewers, and began to call out that he would invite the villagers to taste Jiang's seafood in gravy for free.

This is truly unprecedented and will likely never be repeated!

Who has ever seen someone so carefree? He offended everyone in the village, and then turned around and smiled and invited them to eat.

Would anyone dare to eat it?

The villagers not only dared not eat it, but they all practically wore their contempt on their foreheads.

So, half a day passed, and no one came to taste Jiangshan's seafood in a gravy.

Jiang Shan then spotted a familiar chubby boy with two children hiding not far away.

"Chunpang, come here!"

The village head's most pampered little chubby grandson finally managed to sneak out of his home, and after finding two allies, he was discovered by the enemy before he could even launch an attack.

Gu Yuchun had been craving Jiao's steamed cakes and seafood with gravy for a long time, and finally had a chance to enjoy them openly, but his parents at home absolutely refused to let him go out.

Seeing Jiangshan beckoning to him, his two short legs seemed to obey him, and he came running over.

Jiang Shan packed a bowl for each of the boys and sternly instructed them, "Eat half yourself and leave the other half for the elders at home who are drinking. Do you understand? Come back tomorrow and tell me who in your family ate this seafood. If you do well, I'll reward you with steamed cakes tomorrow. If you dare to eat it all by yourself, I'll beat you up!"

Several children happily ran off carrying their seafood.

Not far away, Qiao Shi led Qiao Sheng from the village entrance, followed by villagers at a distance.

He strode up to Jiang Shan and got straight to the point: "Shan'er, if you don't mind that your Uncle Qiao and Asheng are clumsy with words and hands, my son and I would like to do this odd job!"

Jiang Shan was waiting for this father and son; they must have come after seeing the advertisement.

She glanced at the villagers watching the commotion from a short distance away and said with a smile, "Uncle Qiao, Brother Qiao, we've got it all figured out. The laborer gets three coins a day, and all the work for the day must be finished on the same day. If it's not finished, we'll have to work overtime!"

"Okay, okay, I'll listen to you, I'll listen to whatever you say!" Qiao Shi waved his hand happily.

Jiang Shan nodded, glanced at the sun, and said, "Uncle Qiao, if you have nothing else to do, you can start working now. You can get two coins today."

Before Qiao Shi could speak, Qiao Sheng had already rolled up his sleeves and strode into the Jiao family's gate, with Qiao Shi following closely behind.

A short while later, the father and son carried two basins of seafood to the front yard.

Following Jiang Shan's instructions, Jiao Sanlang brought them two low stools, and the father and son sat facing each other and began sorting the seafood.

Through the open gate, several villagers craned their necks to look.

The father and son sprinkled some white powder into the basin and then put the sorted seafood into different bamboo baskets.

"What are they doing?" someone asked, puzzled.

Jiao Sanlang glanced at everyone and answered methodically, "Pick out all the small seafood and dead seafood; these can't be sold. Keep the small seafood for our family to eat; those that have just died can be made into seafood sauce, and the ones that are completely dead should be thrown away!"

Saburo was a child, and a child who couldn't keep his mouth shut. As soon as he opened his mouth, the villagers surrounded him.

"Is this stuff really that delicious? How can so much seafood sell out? How much can it fetch?"

"How did you guys do this? How can you eat something that's not fully cooked? What did Brother Qiao put in there just now?"

Sanlang looked at this and then at that, scratched his head, and said in a simple and honest way, "We've sold them all to the restaurants in town, but it's still not enough! Manager Qi wants you to make a lot more, sister!"

Wow, so much information... That sentence is packed with meaning!

A quick-witted woman immediately turned around and walked up to Jiang Shan, smiling as she said, "My dear niece, I can do this job too. Let me help you with the work!"

Jiang Shan glanced at the woman lightly, smiling innocently.

“Aunt Qing, I wouldn’t dare! This morning you said that what good things could a shameless, filthy slut like me make? What if someone dies from eating it? Wouldn’t that be fulfilling your good wishes? Why would I want to bring bad luck upon myself?”

Slap slap slap! The slap in the face came really fast!

Yu Qing is the village chief's second daughter-in-law. She has a very sharp tongue, but she is very popular with the village chief's wife. They are like-minded.

He used to act like a tyrant in the village, but Jiang Shan slapped him in the face in front of the villagers, and he was furious.

"You little hussy, you just wait and see how long you can be so smug!"

After saying that, he stormed off in a huff.

The villagers dared not offend the village chief's family. Seeing Aunt Qing leave with resentment, the rest of the villagers also dispersed.

Only one young woman stood timidly a short distance away, hesitant to approach.
