Chapter 73 Past Events

Fu Qiyuan heard a voice, a voice that made him want to open his eyes, yet he dared not. He had clearly never heard this voice before, yet somehow he knew what it was.

It's Huai'er nursing.

He also fed Huai'er goat milk, and the sound Huai'er made when drinking goat milk was completely different from this sound.

This kid must have been really hungry, because he was eating with great gusto, swallowing one bite after another, and making satisfied "mmm" sounds from his throat from time to time.

Perhaps it was because Huai'er's voice was too loud, or perhaps Fu Qiyuan couldn't control his heart, he quietly opened one eye, then closed it again in disappointment.

A screen separated them from all their romance; Shan'er was breastfeeding her child behind the screen. Perhaps she came up with this method to make it easier to care for him, while also not wanting the child to go hungry.

Although he could no longer see it, that did not stop Fu Qiyuan's ingenious ideas.

He tilted his head slightly towards the screen, closed his eyes, and imagined that graceful figure, and that cute little mouth trying to suckle.

Unfortunately, someone had to spoil the mood.

"Hey, you brat, take it easy! It's just that you were hungry for an extra fifteen minutes, is it really necessary to hold such a grudge against your mother? You're a man, don't be so petty!"

"That's enough, don't push your luck! I was just making medicine for that handsome uncle, I'm still hungry myself, so stop being so fussy!"

Fu Qiyuan knew the joke about "being particular about one's lot in poverty". He didn't know which servant Shan'er had heard it from, but it was said that in wealthy families, wet nurses would wash off the baby's body before breastfeeding, so that the baby could only smell the wet nurse's scent. This way, the baby would become dependent on the wet nurse and would be filial to her when he grew up.

I don’t know if Shan’er listened to me, but he would bathe Huai’er before each feeding. If he didn’t bathe him occasionally, he would not want to eat.

The little guy had almost finished eating, and Jiang Shan straightened his clothes and came out from behind the screen.

Fu Qiyuan quickly closed his eyes and pretended not to wake up.

Jiang Shan carried the child to Fu Qiyuan's bedside, bent down to pull the thin blanket down a bit, and closed the window a little, so the room wasn't so bright.

After doing all that, she nonchalantly placed the child next to Fu Qiyuan and went out with a basin of water.

The father and son stared at each other for a while, then Jiang Huai got annoyed and started kicking his legs while tugging at Fu Qiyuan's sleeve.

Fu Qiyuan had no choice but to sit up, pick up Jiang Huai, and play with him on his lap.

Jiang Shan quickly entered, carrying the medicinal soup she had prepared for Fu Qiyuan. Seeing Fu Qiyuan playing with Jiang Huai, she smiled and said, "Did I wake you? He's got that kind of skill!"

Fu Qiyuan's gaze followed Jiang Shan's figure, but he said, "Just send the servants. You just need to take good care of Huai'er!"

Jiang Shan didn't say anything, took the child, and handed the medicine to Fu Qiyuan.

While drinking his medicine, Fu Qiyuan said thoughtfully, "The baby will be a month old in a few days. I asked my mother, and she said that since Huai'er is the eldest grandson of the Jiao family, we want to have a grand celebration for Huai'er's one-month birthday."

Jiao family? Eldest grandson? Jiang Shan glanced at Fu Qiyuan with a half-smile, his tone no longer as gentle as before: "Young Master Fu, let me remind you, Jiang Huai's surname is Jiang, he was born of a mother but raised by no father, he is indeed the grandson of the Jiao family, but he has nothing to do with the Jiao family's son! Even if you want to be a cheap father, the child can only have the surname Jiang."

Fu Qiyuan said anxiously, "I misspoke. Mother meant that she would treat Huai'er as her own grandson, and I would treat him as... my own son. We both want to give him the best, so that he can live a life without lack or regret!"

Jiang Shan's expression visibly shifted to her previous bright and gentle demeanor. She gently pinched Jiang Huai's little nose and smiled, "You're the one who's more lovable. Luckily, your mother didn't abandon you back then!"

This statement contained a lot of information, so Fu Qiyuan tentatively asked, "Back then... you suffered a lot when you were pregnant with Huai'er, didn't you?"

The smile in Jiang Shan's eyes faded. She wiped the drool from her son's mouth with a handkerchief and said casually, "How can a woman who is pregnant out of wedlock not be looked down upon? On another note, your Fu Zhi is also Jiang Huai's savior. If it weren't for him, Jiang Huai and I would have been drowned!"

Drowning? Fu Qiyuan's eyes widened in shock. "Why would they drown you? Who are they?!"

Jiang Shan glanced at Fu Qiyuan in surprise. "Didn't Fu Zhi tell you? The villagers of Huaigu Village saw me disheveled and said that I was having an affair with a wild man and that I had cuckolded Jiao Erlang. They can't tolerate me and want to drown me."

Perhaps recalling that unpleasant scene, Jiang Shan's mood clearly dropped.

Fu Qiyuan's heart was in turmoil. He never imagined that Jiang Shan would almost be drowned! His woman and his son were almost murdered! Fu Zhiming clearly told him that the girl and his family had been properly taken care of. Was this what he called a proper take-off?

He had always thought that Fu Zhi's claim of saving her was simply a matter of giving her some money to ease her immediate crisis, but he never expected...!

Fu Zhi had always known that she was pregnant with his child, but he had kept it a secret from her—that damned lackey!

Fu Qiyuan's eyes suddenly turned fierce, and Jiang Shan even suspected that he might want to go back and kill those villagers.

"Don't be like this, it's all in the past. Jiang Huai and I are both fine, aren't we? The villagers were ignorant, and they all got their comeuppance. I didn't suffer any loss. Take it easy." Jiang Shan gently tugged at Fu Qiyuan's sleeve, his tone becoming increasingly soft and gentle.

"They almost killed you and Huai'er! That damned lackey...!" For the first time, Fu Qiyuan sentenced someone to death.

"Hey, Fu Zhi saved me and Jiang Huai. He did all that for your own good, so don't blame him!" Jiang Shan reluctantly said something nice for Fu Zhi.

Actually, if Fu Zhi hadn't saved her, she wouldn't know where she would be now. Maybe she would have died, or maybe she would have been transported to another place.

No matter what, she has already taken root in this world and left her seed; she must live this life well no matter what.

But Jiang Shan didn't know that Fu Qiyuan hated it most when people used the guise of doing what he disliked to do.

Fu Qiyuan suffered a great blow. He prided himself on being a patient and vengeful person, and he could not tolerate the hatred for the country and his child for even a moment.

No sooner had Jiang Shan left than Fu Qiyuan summoned his bodyguards.

That night, all the villagers of Huaigu Village who had witnessed Jiangshan being submerged were bound hand and foot and thrown into the river like dumplings being dropped into a pot.

They won't die, but they'll most likely face punishment anyway.
