Xiao Xin sensed something was wrong when she heard his stammering tone.
As he locked the door, he asked, "Why are you talking like that? Are you sick?"
Because the phone's earpiece was on speaker, Fu Yan frowned unhappily when he heard that familiar voice, and paused in tapping the sofa with his fingertips.
The manager caught a glimpse of Fu Yan's action and knew it was a prelude to anger; his breath caught in his throat.
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and asked Xiao Xin loudly, "Hehe, I'm fine. I just wanted to ask where you are now and what you're doing..."
Hearing that he had resumed his normal speaking pace, Xiao Xin dispelled her doubts and said calmly, "I just rented a place on Rose Street, and I'm currently preparing..."
Before he could finish speaking, the manager interrupted him: "Location! Xiao Xin, just send me your location!"
The manager's voice suddenly rose, startling Xiao Xin, who paused in closing the door.
Fortunately, Xiao Xin was used to the manager's dramatic personality and didn't take it to heart.
Aside from keeping it a secret from that woman, it didn't matter to others if they knew where he lived, especially since there was an even bigger secret between him and the manager.
Thinking this to himself, Xiao Xin said, "Let's add each other on WeChat first."
The manager said, "Okay, okay! My WeChat ID is my phone number, add me."
He hung up the phone immediately after he finished speaking.
Xiao Xin stared at the disconnected call screen for a second before tapping the WeChat interface and adding the manager's WeChat.
After sending his location, he put his phone back in his pocket, closed the door, and went downstairs.
...
Fu Yan got up from the sofa, glanced at the location forwarded to his phone, put his hands in his pockets, and walked past the manager toward the door.
The manager knelt stiffly on the floor, his back slightly bent, not daring to utter a sound.
Only when the footsteps behind him disappeared did he dare to turn around and look towards the gate.
Once he was sure Fu Yan was far away, the manager collapsed onto the coffee table, his legs numb from kneeling on the floor, unable to exert any strength.
As if struck by a sudden thought, the manager abruptly reached for his phone on the coffee table, opened it, and sure enough, the "kissing photo" had been deleted.
His fingertips trembled as he dialed Xiao Xin's number.
Xiao Xin had just exited the alley and gotten into a taxi.
Seeing that the manager was calling again, he gently put the phone to his ear and asked, "Hello?"
Upon hearing his voice, the manager suddenly felt unsteady on his feet. After catching his breath, he asked, "Xiao Xin, where are you now?"
"In the car, about to return to the club," Xiao Xin replied.
The manager grunted twice, glanced around to make sure no one was watching, and then whispered, "You'd better come back quickly. Young Master Fu just came looking for you, and he looks like he's going to kill you. If you run into him on the street, try to avoid him..."
Xiao Xin could feel his tension even through the screen, and couldn't help but chuckle, "Since you're so afraid of me dying, why did you let me take that job?"
The manager, who had been sitting cross-legged in a more comfortable position, got excited after hearing what Xiao Xin said.
"We're in this together now, how can I not worry about you? But seeing how Young Master Fu was just now, it was really scary. As for other things, we'll talk about them after Young Master Fu calms down in the next couple of days."
The manager sighed as he spoke. Yu Muqing hadn't returned today, and he had to shoulder everything alone, which put a lot of pressure on him.
Hearing his tone, Xiao Xin didn't argue with him. She simply hummed in agreement and said, "That's all for now, bye."
"Okay," the manager said. "Hang it up."
Xiao Xin hung up the phone and pinched the bridge of her nose.
The thought of Fu Yan gave him a headache.
Judging from the manager's tone, the matter seemed quite serious.
What does Fu Yan want with him?
You want to kill him?
Xiao Xin dared not think too much about it; the more he thought about it, the colder the back of his neck became.
He raised his hand and touched the back of his neck, then touched the rope chain.
Xiao Xin's eyes flashed. Could it be that the kid was after this necklace?
It seems she's someone as persistent as him.
Is Jiang Yuqing as important to Fu Yan as He Yunzhou is to him?
If the star pendant that He Yunzhou held tightly until his death really belonged to Jiang Yuqing, then does that mean He Yunzhou... could also rule out the possibility of suicide?
Xiao Xin closed his eyes and leaned back in his seat, when suddenly a scene from two years ago flashed into his mind.
Two years ago today, Xiao Xin was still an intern.
The day I learned of He Yunzhou's death, the sky was just as dark and gloomy as it is now.
Because he was an intern, all the miscellaneous tasks were piled on him. While he was still working overtime, he received a call from the police.
"Hello, is this Xiao Xin? There's a body here that you need to identify. Is this a convenient time?"
No, you dialed the wrong number.
Xiao Xin initially thought it was a scam call. His mind was already a jumbled mess of work, and he was about to hang up when he heard the other end say:
"The body's name is He Yunzhou. We found two phone numbers in his contacts. We couldn't get through to the other one, so we contacted you."
After hearing the name He Yunzhou, Xiao Xin heard nothing else.
A loud bang went through my head, and all I could hear was a piercing ringing in my ears.
He didn't know how he got into the police station, nor how many people he had hit along the way, and how he had been called a "madman."
Police said the body was found on the edge of a cliff and that the cause of death was excessive blood loss to the brain. Since no other suspects were found nearby at the time, homicide was ruled out.
Xiao Xin was so disoriented from crying that he almost had to go to the emergency room after lifting the white sheet and confirming it was He Yunzhou.
