Xiao Xin chuckled coldly, picked up the bottled water on the table, opened it, and took a sip.
"I have no money," he said.
The woman yelled into the phone again: "Damn it, if you don't have money, go sell yourself! Don't think I don't know those women are throwing money at you! Where's the money?"
Xiao Xin rubbed his aching head, intending to hang up once the woman finished her tirade.
He never met his so-called "mother," only knowing that she left him and his father with a pile of debts before leaving home.
When he grew up, he realized that the woman had been secretly observing them all along.
He changed his phone number several times, but the woman always managed to reach him, so he stopped bothering to change it again.
Not long ago, even my ID card was stolen by loan sharks.
Xiao Xin didn't respond, and the woman continued her tirade of profanities: "You ingrate! Your face is only good because I'm good-looking. Otherwise, why would so many women be willing to spend money on you?"
"..."
Every time Xiao Xin tried to call the police, the woman threatened him with his father...
"I'm telling you, don't play dead with me. I know which hospital your dad is in. If you don't transfer the money to me today, I'll go and kill your dad!"
Sure enough, the same thing happened today.
He really admired this woman; she always used the same reason to force him to pay, and he had no choice but to.
The reason is that even if he transfers his father to another hospital, the woman can always find his father and, when no one is looking, occasionally cut his father in several ways.
But now, Xiao Xin had nothing of value on him except a set of tattered clothes and two old coins.
Xiao Xin grabbed a handful of hair in frustration: "I'm really broke lately..."
The woman scoffed, "I'll fucking send you to sell yourself!"
Xiao Xin found it somewhat ridiculous; a crazy woman is a crazy woman, and when she goes crazy, she even curses herself.
Xiao Xin stared at his crotch and chuckled softly, "I can't do it."
"Hmph, can't do it? That's hilarious! You ingrate, don't try to act all high and mighty with me. Let me tell you, if your dad is a prostitute, then you have to be one too!"
Xiao Xin's eyelids drooped, and her eyes began to redden as if she were thinking of something.
The effects of yesterday's alcohol hadn't worn off when he suddenly felt nauseous and couldn't help but gag.
Indeed, what good can come from the offspring of a conman and a male prostitute?
He sniffed, and mumbled in a hoarse voice, "No money, but you can take my life..."
"What did you say, you ungrateful wretch? Say it again if you dare!"
"I fucking told you to kill me!!"
Xiao Xin's shout was so loud that his voice cracked.
The woman opposite him seemed stunned by his shout and fell silent.
Xiao Xin calmed himself down.
He bent his knees, buried his head in his knees, and held his head with both hands, adopting a defensive posture.
He ran his slender fingers through his disheveled hair, staring at the still-running call screen, and calmly asked, "Besides giving birth to me, have you ever raised me?"
"From the time I was old enough to understand, I was chased and beaten by debt collectors, my dad..."
Xiao Xin's eyes welled up with tears, which streamed down her face uncontrollably. Her voice trembled with sobs as she spoke haltingly:
“My dad broke both legs in a car accident while trying to escape debt collectors. Now he'll be bedridden for the rest of his life. If you're so capable, go pay off those debts yourself. Why should I pay them?”
"Why should I..."
He stubbornly raised his hand to wipe away his tears, his eyes stinging and swollen, but the tears flowed like a flood, unstoppable...
Xiao Xin closed her eyes, buried her face in her arms, and her shoulders trembled: "Why should I pay it back? And why should I give you living expenses? Is this how a mother should act?"
"On what basis...?"
Xiao Xin desperately grabbed at his hair.
He'd really had enough of this shitty life.
He cried until his nose turned red, and then he couldn't breathe properly and gasped for air.
"Just kill me..."
...
After an unknown amount of time, Xiao Xin was so confused from crying that her mind went completely blank.
The call had already been disconnected, but he was still crying…
A hand with distinct fingers quietly landed on his shoulder, and a clear, gentle male voice came from above: "The other party has hung up..."
Xiao Xin opened his eyes groggily, his eyes red and swollen from crying. He looked up at the man and saw it was Yu Muqing.
Yu Muqing pulled up a chair, sat down next to him, and crossed her arms.
Seeing Xiao Xin looking at him, he turned his head and smiled: "Have you cried enough?"
Hearing him say that, Xiao Xin couldn't hold back her tears again.
He kept his lips tightly closed and didn't speak, his eyes vacant, still not having reacted.
Until Yu Muqing reached out and gently wiped away the tears from the corner of his eyes with her fingers.
The icy touch made him instinctively take a step back.
"..."
Xiao Xin looked at him warily, like a frightened little white rabbit.
Yu Muqing was amused by his excessive stress reaction.
He smiled and withdrew his hand, then sat back down in his chair, quietly looking at Xiao Xin.
Five minutes later, Xiao Xin felt a soreness in his neck, so he looked away and rubbed his eyes.
He bowed his head and apologized to Mu Qing, "I'm sorry, I made you laugh..."
Yu Muqing smiled but didn't say anything.
He raised his hand and beckoned with his finger, and his assistant came over and placed a suit next to Xiao Xin's bed.
Xiao Xin then looked up at him and asked, "What's this?"
"Congratulations, you passed the interview."
Xiao Xin stared at the suit in a daze for a moment: "..."
He was so drunk yesterday, how did he manage to get away with it?
Just as Xiao Xin was about to say something, the phone on the bed started vibrating again.
