Chapter 15 Garbage Games Ruined My Childhood

Because she swallowed the magical and rare little flower, Cheng Shuang emerged victorious in her contest to see who was stronger than the monster. Some of the monsters that were knocked away persisted in their pursuit, while others died on the spot.

Unfortunately, this special effect only lasted for a few dozen seconds. When she flew over the three-meter-wide cliff on the other side, her body felt cold, and the dazzling protective shield began to weaken.

The moment it landed on the opposite bank, an ugly humanoid monster suddenly emerged from the ground. The protective membrane performed its final function, perishing together with the humanoid monster and disappearing completely.

Although Cheng Shuang managed to keep one heart, her field of vision shifted from high to low.

She shrank.

The surrounding buildings were enormous. She felt as if she had wandered into a land of giants, and struggled frantically with her short legs, taking a long time to run a short distance.

The little girl, unusually still possessing some energy, was filled with curiosity amidst her panic.

Different perspectives, different feelings.

Unfortunately, at that speed, she wouldn't last more than three meters before being trampled to death by the monster.

Next is a giant bridge with two huge piers in front and behind it. To cross the bridge, you need to jump over the piers.

Cheng Shuang had a bad feeling. Before she could get close, a SpongeBob SquarePants covered in thorns popped out of the pile, grinning at her with a mouthful of sharp teeth in a cringe-worthy smile.

This trash game ruined my childhood!

The adorable SpongeBob SquarePants is gone forever!

The little girl silently gave Nintendo a bad review in her heart, gradually slowed down, and leaped up the moment SpongeBob shrank back.

At this moment, the inconvenience of his small size became apparent. His short legs struggled to take big steps and barely managed to jump to the edge. Just as the sea urchin-shaped SpongeBob was about to pop up again, he pounced and rolled onto the bridge.

A series of heart-stopping movements made Cheng Shuang hold her breath in tension. A gentle breeze blew by, and she felt her clothes were soaked with sweat and her legs went weak.

Unable to control their bodies, yet experiencing pain and exhaustion, the ordeal was unbearable.

The bridge was a log bridge made of planks and iron chains, swaying precariously. I was forced to steady myself to avoid rolling into the river below, where the water was so green that I couldn't even see its true color.

He then got up and continued running.

Upon reaching the second mound, he was caught off guard and his foot sank into the ground, causing him to fall.

The environment, resembling an underground cave, suddenly appeared before her eyes. Cheng Shuang had lost all sense of wonder and was deeply attracted by the scene before her.

A magnificent, golden cave appeared before us, its luxurious gold and bronze decorations illuminating the only path.

The rock face is carved with three-dimensional strange birds and beasts, their expressions ferocious and lifelike. If it weren't for their cast gold exterior, one would definitely mistake them for living beings.

Her body started running again on its own, with an indomitable spirit. Cheng Shuang's ears twitched, and she clearly felt a rumbling sound behind her. Then, with a loud thud, everything went black, and she felt a tearing pain all over her body. The pain caused tears to stream down her face uncontrollably.

The next moment, she found herself standing atop a large stone slab that had suddenly appeared across the road. Between the heavy slab and the ground, flesh and blood were slowly seeping out, turning the area a deep crimson...

He actually got killed!

The little girl felt so miserable!

Such a horrific scene would give her nightmares!

Another life lost.

The tearing pain still lingered, and the shadow of that instant of death made Cheng Shuang's spine tighten and feel cold. A huge sense of crisis weighed heavily on her heart, and her consciousness clamored for her to escape from it all.

Having already died twice, the last peach heart seems especially precious and fragile on a future filled with uncertainty.

No one can lend their life to the little girl; similarly, if they fail to complete the game, they will all be wiped out.

Terrified by this speculation, Cheng Shuang took a few deep breaths to calm herself, jumped over slippery steps, crossed molten lava pits where flames occasionally flew, and weaved through the ferocious attacks of the sculptures that had somehow come to life.

Surrounded by flashing swords and gleaming blades, the little girl, unusually, found herself entertaining herself. "Hmm, I am truly the greatest hero in the world! I will overcome the obstacles, defeat the evil dragon, and rescue the beautiful princess!"

There was no dragon or princess at the final stop. A steep staircase leading to the sky was faintly visible ahead. When she stepped onto the first step, her vision blurred and she was back beside Du Jun and Ma Guoxu.

The game is over!

Both pairs of eyes looked at her at the same time.

The little girl's face was slightly pale. She blinked and asked in a trembling voice, "Where is Sister Liu Juan?"

Ma Guoxu shook his head sadly, "My sister died too quickly, there wasn't enough time..."

Du Jun's eyes were cold, but his lips were taut, revealing a barely perceptible change in emotion.

Cheng Shuang bit her lip hard, holding back her tears. Although Sister Liu Juan was emotionally unstable, she was truly a good person, better than many of the adults present!

Ma Guoxu looked at the two silent and grieving teenagers, his voice hoarse, "Life and death are unpredictable, you've already done very well!"

Du Jun lifted his eyelids, his eyes clear and bright, and nodded very lightly as an answer.

The three of them were exhausted, both mentally and physically. They sat together quietly, back to back, resting.

Noisy commotion could be heard nearby; some teams were cheering, while others remained silent.

Looking around, Cheng Shuang noticed that the once vast space seemed to have become much quieter overnight.

The group with the most survivors was the only group of five. They had also lost one of their companions, and the other four, perhaps because they had escaped death, were happily chatting loudly.

Wu Qian and her boyfriend were safe and sound, and they hugged each other excitedly.

The spots where the two makeshift teams were standing were completely empty, not a single person remained...

Of the 21 participants, only nine survived.

Even Du Jun, who seemed to have experienced no danger as the gatekeeper, had all four red hearts crossed out.

Cheng Shuang looked down at her pass on her chest, which still had a bright red heart on it, full of irony.

She observed for another week. In the most recent group, two people survived. One had lost all his hearts, while the other still had two. They kept their distance from each other, sitting in separate corners, heads down, ignoring each other. They didn't seem like teammates who had shared life and death; instead, they were enveloped in a guarded sense of alienation.

Cheng Shuang closed her eyes and whispered to Du Jun about their experiences as gatekeepers.

It turns out that if the gatekeeper successfully borrows a life, he will also lose a heart, and if the adventurer dies without any chance to borrow a life, the gatekeeper will also lose a life.

When Ma Guoxu was seriously injured, he borrowed three lives. When Liu Juan entered the game, she only had two hearts. If she had extra hearts, she would not be shown to the players who were watching when she encountered a death calamity. Instead, she would automatically draw hearts to be reborn.

Liu Juan died unexpectedly, killed in a single blow, while Du Jun lost his last heart.

If Du Jun refuses to lend his life in order to save his own, he can at least keep one heart. Of course, if everyone dies, his chances of surviving alone are almost zero.

The person next to them with two hearts is their team's gatekeeper...
