Chapter 160 Alone

The school is flanked by bustling streets.

The ground-floor shops and low-rise residential buildings are connected, and the life of a clean and bustling third-tier county town slowly unfolds before her.

Cheng Shuang felt a sense of disorientation as she stood at the school gate. She seemed to see Cheng Qing standing across the small road waiting for her to get out of school. The older sister, who didn't smile much, had a slight curve to her lips, and her delicate face was full of gentleness as she waved to her.

But after she walked over, there was no one there.

The little girl pouted in disappointment and casually unlocked the bicycle in front of her.

The bicycles in the town don't require a mobile app; you just need to swipe your student ID.

Looking at Yingsheng Middle School on her student ID, and then at the logo of Baiyun Town Boarding School, Cheng Shuang silently put the ID back into her bag.

She rode her bicycle slowly through both sides of the street, listening to the muffled voice in her pocket repeating "normal, normal, normal" repeatedly... she was utterly speechless.

The more normal the people in the town seem, the more dangerous the old school campus might be.

She now has a premonition that she is about to be sent to the guillotine.

Following the road signs, the little girl headed east. This path was supposed to be a one-way street, and no cars passed by for half a day. Occasionally, there were traces of pedestrians, but as the light dimmed, the number of pedestrians decreased.

The tall trees on both sides gradually replaced the shops and buildings. The trees were as tall as green mountains, blocking out the sun. When Cheng Shuang came to her senses, she couldn't tell whether it was because it was dark or because the trees were blocking the light.

In the depths of darkness, a wooden old school building stands tall, named Ying Sheng Middle School (Baiyun Village) Branch Campus.

The resilience of humankind in transforming a small village into a bustling town is truly astonishing.

The school stood alone in the darkness, as if it were outside the world. Yet it was undeniably there before the little girl's eyes.

The moment Cheng Shuang stepped inside, the dark earth rippled. She looked up and saw rows of filing cabinets forming the office's partitions, each containing a desk and chair, but no one was sitting in the chairs.

She was just a tiny part of the many filing cabinets surrounding her, standing in the corridor filled with them, looking around in bewilderment, like a small animal that couldn't find its home...

The vast space resembled a warehouse, crammed full of wide and tall filing cabinets, densely packed, with the rest of the space fading into darkness.

The little girl was even more confused.

Are there that many teachers?

The filing cabinets and walls here have blackened marks from fire, while the floor is damp, and the scattered documents and miscellaneous items in the filing cabinets emit a musty smell that has been accumulating for a long time.

Another enclosed environment, without even a vent, let alone doors and windows.

At this moment, there is truly no turning back and no way forward.

Cheng Shuang took a deep breath, but coughed several times because she was choked. Black particles in the air, like spores, stuck to her respiratory tract, causing an itch in her throat.

The little girl took out her water bottle from her bag, took a sip of water, and suppressed the urge to cough.

Although the future was uncertain, she did not feel hopeless. Cheng Shuang thought that if the documents were submitted in time, perhaps nothing terrible would happen.

For some reason, only one thought remained in my mind—

Completing the transfer procedures and returning to the new campus = safety

We need to complete the procedures as soon as possible!

The young girl patiently searched among the rows of filing cabinets to find where Teacher Xue's office was located.

Fortunately, each desk had a teacher's name card stuck to its corner. Some were incomplete, some were wet and illegible, and others were buried under heavy documents.

The cluttered desks exuded an office atmosphere, as if the teachers had only left temporarily... But the reality was quite different. After searching through several rows of filing cabinets, the young girl finally puffed up her cheeks in anger. There wasn't even a teacher to ask for directions. Who was she supposed to hand over her paperwork to?

Was it placed on the wrong desk? If the documents are lost, then it's definitely her responsibility!

etc……

The sound of footsteps echoed in the quiet air.

Like fingernails gripping the ground, or like a wild beast wading through water...

Cheng Shuang shuddered. Why had she become so relaxed, so single-mindedly focused on handing the materials to the right teacher?

This step may be necessary, but ignoring harsh conditions because of it is a mistake that should never be made.

The young girl hid behind a filing cabinet and recalled her experience after entering the room. She quickly wet a handkerchief with water from the kettle and wiped all the exposed skin clean, leaving a layer of ash-like residue.

She frowned, then used another clean handkerchief to soak up the moisture and simply clean her nasal cavity, eyes, and ears, using the remaining water to rinse her mouth.

After doing all that, she put on a mask and hat, leaving only her eyes exposed, and her mind immediately felt much clearer.

The footsteps grew closer, carrying the distinctive pungent smell of animals, and their breathing was extremely rough, like that of a huge, ferocious beast.

Cheng Shuang knew something was wrong. She could already tell the level of danger. The creature that came was no ordinary beast, because no beast could take a step that was hundreds of steps away and approach so quickly from afar... Sure enough, its appearance was abrupt, and its approach was abrupt. She could vaguely hear a four-clawed giant beast slowly moving back and forth in the aisle between the adjacent filing cabinets.

The little girl suddenly covered her mouth. If her height was one-fifth of the height of the filing cabinet, then this beast must have reached two-thirds. Its breathing was very rough, making a loud, wheezing sound from slightly below the top of the cabinet. If it could still stand on two legs, it could probably slap her into a pulp.

There is nowhere to hide here.

The only thing that can stand up to it is the bear cub.

Baby bear!

Baby bear!

Baby bear?
