With Sun Han's help, Du Jun successfully found a way to open the nutrient chamber from the inside.
Lifting the square headrest is the switch for the nutrient chamber.
This means that either the lid pops open automatically after the blue liquid disappears, or the person inside wakes up beforehand and opens the lid from the inside; neither method is practical.
They completely abandoned their rescue plan. After Du Jun and Si Hai each put away a few spare nutrient tanks, the group headed deeper into the basement.
Perhaps Yu Xin knew what lay deep within the basement, but she was already dead, and everything had to start all over again.
The long, seemingly endless road appeared even more distant because of the faint light.
The car accelerated forward, turning the journey from being measured in hours into being measured in minutes.
Si Hai was driving, and Sun Han was in the passenger seat. Even though the two adult men were not as burly and robust as Du Lanshan, they still took up too much space in the back seat, so Si Yue, Cheng Shuang, and Du Jun were sitting in the back.
The little girl, huddled in the middle of the back row, yawned. Although the existence of the Gate of Reincarnation had temporarily eased the maintainer's growth needs, her age was still a factor. Once she got tired, her body would automatically need to catch up on sleep.
In April, Cheng Shuang, whose little head was about to turn into a sleepy bug, was to be held in her arms, but Du Jun, on the other side, took the initiative and hunched his straight back, allowing the little girl's head to rest on his shoulder.
The soft, cuddly little girl leaned against the older boy on her own, sleeping soundly like a kitten that had deliberately exposed its belly.
The two adults who had been talking earlier lowered their voices. It has to be said that this exploration has become much easier because of Cheng Shuang's presence.
They didn't think the wanderers from the Abyss City were being too careless, which is why there were no guards in the underground space except for the second basement level.
In reality, without speed-related skills or cards, it would be impossible to travel back and forth through this long passage in just one or two hours. Similarly, the wanderers are probably already aware of the strict limitations of the cards. Special cards with rare attributes are always in the minority. Perhaps the maintainers who use cards to try to explore secrets don't even need to worry about them; they've already dug their own graves on their way to collect information.
Yesterday, when they went to the depths of the second basement level, Sihai used a skill card with a teleportation effect. Fortunately, the negative effect of that one-time use card was that it would make them appear as nothing, so he and Du Jun were able to successfully reach the depths and glimpse some of the truth.
Today, it was Du Jun's turn to help out on the third basement level. This kid was actually able to carry people on his skateboard, which was quite unexpected.
However, neither cards nor stamina can be consumed indefinitely. Without Cheng Shuang's temporary skill, it would be impossible for them to be able to handle things with ease.
The wanderers of the Abyss City probably never imagined that their ranks included more than one maintainer, and that this little maintainer played an absolutely crucial role.
Sihai's idea wasn't because he looked down on the other defenders and favored Gao Chengshuang; it was simply because this young girl not only possessed good luck and courage, but also quick wit that many people lacked. Especially in times of crisis, her survival instinct was truly admirable.
The wanderers of the Abyss City appear obsequious on the surface, but are actually quite arrogant at heart.
If you didn't understand before, now anyone with a clear mind can sense that the so-called attendants or guides, who act respectfully and servilely towards the VIPs, actually harbor a deep-seated belief that this thing is about to belong to me, and that I should treat 'him' better, keep 'him' in a good mood, so that he can be better used by me (from soul to body).
They brazenly lay their strength beneath their feet, and when the day of harvest arrives, all the maintainers realize that they are not far from self-salvation but have no hope of ever being saved. The frustration and despair they feel are unimaginable.
It might also lead to feelings of self-doubt and panic, such as "Why are the maintainers so weak? They were just a hair's breadth away from escaping!"
These wanderers, though lacking the absolute power of those from other death zones, can slowly erode and manipulate the will of their protectors psychologically—a truly terrifying tactic.
"Are you thinking about what method they'll use to drive all the maintainers underground in the end?" Sun Han suddenly spoke up. He lowered his voice, glanced at Si Hai who was deep in thought while driving, and joked, "Luckily there's no one on this road, so we're not afraid of crashing. Otherwise, I wouldn't dare ride in your car."
Si Hai shrugged indifferently, "I'll drive you back." When it came to business, he sighed slightly, "I guess the moment of the Star Moon Festival award ceremony was when they would make their move."
The winner of the painting has a very high chance of getting the right to use the new skin. The award presenter voluntarily gave himself away as takeout, what a great opportunity to get hands-on.
“The award ceremony area should be highlighted,” Sun Han turned to Du Jun and asked, “How much of the city lord’s mansion’s topography can you remember?”
Du Jun closed his eyes and recalled, "Many symbols on the topographic map are different from those we usually use. I suspect that some kind of code has been set up. There is no obvious place on the map that can be used as a square to accommodate the city's residents, except for the three basement floors which have relatively spacious spaces."
“Let’s think about it another way,” April chimed in. “For example, where we are right now.” She looked up slowly, the high ceiling covered with silver metal material that connected to the silver walls, giving it a high-tech feel.
What will be on top of it?
"You mean the circular plaza around the city gate?"
"Since they have magical teleportation elevators, what's so impossible about them possessing a large teleportation array?" April's cool face remained expressionless. "We shouldn't underestimate them just because they appear incredibly humble!"
The little girl leaning on Du Jun's shoulder suddenly sat up, her eyes still dazed, but her mouth opened and closed rapidly, "Wind, wind, that wind!" She pounded her not-so-clear head with her fist and looked at Du Jun beside her for confirmation, "Big brother, do you remember that wind? There was wind in the narrow abyss when you first entered the city and stepped onto the central city through the arched bridge."
Du Jun's face tightened. "So Sister April's analysis is correct. The ground and underground are connected, and the spatial layers are compressed, forming airflow."
The central city is devoid of stars and moon, enclosed within a protective shield. Unless it is man-made, how could airflow be generated in such a closed environment?
The group looked up at the ceiling, where a large teleportation array, invisible to the naked eye, was hidden.
"What methods will they use to get us to cooperate and stand on the teleportation array?" April pondered, biting her lip.
"How many maintainers would know about the teleportation array?" Si Hai chuckled. "If it weren't for Du Jun and Cheng Shuang, who among you would know?"
Du Jun's eyes flickered, but he remained silent. It was actually Sister Liu Juan who discovered the path to the ingredients, which led to the current success. However, it was best not to reveal Sister Liu Juan's existence for now; caution was advised in all matters.
Cheng Shuang had obviously thought of this as well. She exchanged a glance with Du Jun and then shut her mouth.
