My cousin reached out, eager to snatch the gem, but it turned and was stuffed back into an unassuming little cloth bag.
She looked up unhappily, only to meet the little girl's clean and sweet smile.
Cheng Shuang smiled broadly, her expression wistful, "This gemstone is a wedding gift for my future sister-in-law!"
"That's me!" My cousin grinned, revealing all eight of her teeth. Her eyes crinkled into crescents. Though not conventionally beautiful, she was undeniably cheerful. "I'm determined to marry your eldest brother in this lifetime. No one but me can be your sister-in-law!"
"Really?" Cheng Shuang said, feigning surprise. "My dream future sister-in-law is virtuous, kind, loving to her younger sister, and considerate to my older brother. This priceless gem is most fitting for such a sister-in-law!"
"Yes, yes! I am exactly as you described." The cousin nodded repeatedly, her eyes fixed on Cheng Shuang's bag without taking them off. "Virtuous, kind, and caring towards her sister-in-law, what else is there?"
She didn't even look up, trying to grab the captain to remind her.
"I feel sorry for my older brother." Seeing her exaggerated movements, Cheng Shuang immediately thought of Aunt Zombie in the new Mr. Vampire. Perhaps this actress's acting style is just so exaggerated that it makes people want to laugh just by looking at her.
"Yes, yes, yes, I feel sorry for my older brother..." The cousin nodded like a chicken pecking at rice, but then she realized something was wrong and quickly corrected herself, "Your older brother, your older brother, my future husband!"
My cousin, contrary to her previous cold attitude towards Cheng Shuang, smiled obsequiously, showing that the allure of the gemstone was far greater than that of the man.
The captain, however, pulled the little girl's arm aside and whispered, "Little sister! This gem looks so much like the one our father mentioned before he died! I know, he saved it for your dowry!" He tapped the little girl's forehead with his finger and said with exasperation, "Are you stupid? How can you just casually take your own dowry away? Don't you know your cousin's personality? Once it's in her pocket, there's no way she'll take it!"
What about the gemstones Dad mentioned before he died? And what's with the dowry?
Cheng Shuang felt a little dizzy, as if the Gate of Reincarnation was a ridiculous setting that was forcibly assigned to the captain at the last minute!
The captain's future wife—the cousin—had absolutely no trust in her future husband. She mistakenly thought the captain was plotting to steal the gem for himself, so she hurriedly moved closer to the two of them, her eyes gleaming, and asked, "What are you talking about?"
"I was asking my brother where he'd like to go with us during this temporary work stoppage!" Cheng Shuang replied with a smile. "Sister-in-law, let's go together! It'll be more fun with more people!"
"Together, together!" My cousin nodded frantically again. It didn't matter if the person ran away, but the gem couldn't be allowed to run away. Then she opened her eyes wide, her face full of confusion, and asked stupidly, "Where to?"
Upon hearing this, the captain rolled his eyes.
He saw the resolute expressions on their faces, especially his cousin, who seemed as if she wasn't the one who had insisted on staying to learn to ride a bicycle.
The captain could only turn his head helplessly and shout at his men who were waiting for orders, "Two of you stay here to keep watch, the rest of you come back to town with me."
"yes!"
Cheng Shuang breathed a slight sigh of relief. In any case, she had successfully completed her mission.
In the story, the location where the vampire was buried was discovered in the afternoon. It was raining heavily at the time, and Uncle Nine barely made it there. Upon discovering that they had dug in the wrong place and unearthed a terrible 'corpse,' they immediately decided to burn the vampire. However, the captain and his cousin, driven by greed, switched the 'corpse' in order to steal the gem embedded in the weapon that was meant to subdue the vampire, inadvertently awakening the man-eating demon.
With her and Liao Yuewei interfering, Uncle Jiu should arrive earlier, giving him time and opportunity to observe the environment and resolve potential problems sooner.
My cousin is indeed my cousin; she took her capriciousness to the extreme. On the way back, she kept pestering the team leader to teach her how to ride a bicycle.
Although the captain was a bit henpecked, he still cared about Cheng Shuang and instructed two soldiers to stay by Xi Mei's side and follow her orders.
Cheng Shuang had nothing to direct. Watching the two people at the front of the group, so lovey-dovey and seemingly endless, she watched as they strolled along the path. The young girl, meanwhile, lagged behind, leisurely enjoying the scenery. The longer they stayed, the happier she became.
As a result, the two groups bumped into each other.
Uncle Nine and Liao Yuewei walked hurriedly, with Ah Hao following behind, but Ah Fang was nowhere to be seen.
The captain quickly pulled his cousin off the bicycle, rubbing his hands nervously as he explained to Uncle Jiu, "Uncle Jiu, I have something urgent to take care of, you see..."
“Perfect timing, A-Fang also has something to report to the guards.” Uncle Nine had no time to care about the captain’s discomfort. He said, “Things might have changed. Don’t dig the well for now. I’ll go take a look.”
"Then I'll send a few men with you!" Perhaps feeling a little guilty for being caught neglecting his duties, the captain immediately assigned six men and ordered them to obey Uncle Nine's orders.
When Uncle Jiu hurriedly passed by again, he glanced at Cheng Shuang, stopped, and looked at Liao Yuewei. He clearly understood that the two girls had gone their separate ways, which had led to the development of this matter.
He then glanced at his foolish apprentice, who was just following the girl around like a idiot, and sighed silently. What a simpleton! He just hoped that the girl wouldn't let his silly apprentice down!
After sighing, Uncle Nine continued on his way. He was not a petty person. If there was really a problem with the well, they had done a good deed. If they were just being mischievous, he had ways to deal with them.
Liao Yuewei and Cheng Shuang exchanged a glance, smiled, and walked past each other. This world truly lived up to its reputation as a world of perpetual round-trip tickets. For them, it was incredibly easy; it wouldn't be an exaggeration to call it a vacation.
Before long, the group arrived in town. The town was still bustling with activity. Early morning vegetable vendors and shoppers were all leaving satisfied. People hurried along the streets, and shops along the street were all open. Everything was full of vitality.
When passing by a jewelry shop, my cousin was immediately attracted by the new styles on display. Before she even received the gemstones, she was already preparing to find a craftsman to design the jewelry.
She originally wanted to take Cheng Shuang with her, but the captain strictly refused.
The alleyway where Cheng Shuang had come last night, with its bright red lanterns and bustling activity, was now the only quiet corner of the town, as if night and day had been reversed.
Upon seeing the small blood pit she had stepped into, the little girl had a slight premonition about the captain's purpose in coming here.
She looked up at the captain's round back of the head, unable to describe how she felt.
Soon, the quiet little building became noisy because the captain kicked the tightly closed door.
Despite the loud noise, the door remained unmoved. The captain, however, nearly cried out in pain from his foot, but mindful of his image, he endured it. With a wave of his hand, two team members rushed over, banging and kicking the door. Despite being a regular soldier, they behaved like fierce and domineering bandits.
"Coming! Coming!" the woman's voice came through, muffled and unclear. She complained, "Alright, stop shouting, you're trying to call back my soul..."
