Chapter 496 Human Touch

Cheng Shuang pouted in a depressed mood, put on her earmuffs, and walked a few more steps toward the fence along with her wide-brimmed hat, out of sight, out of mind.

The others disregarded their own private matters. As the fog began to spread from afar, they took out their food, waited for the ticket seller to approve their tickets, and quickened their pace toward the fence.

As they were walking, the group suddenly heard a scream.

Ah! I see someone!

When they turned around again, they suddenly froze on the spot.

Ah B's head had been cut off, and he lay on the ground, completely dead.

Xiangrong's heart was pierced by a hole the size of a thumb, from which blood flowed. She lay slumped at the ticket seller's feet, her fingers reaching defiantly towards a backpack beside her. Inside the backpack were scattered the water and electricity kit and the pill bottle she had exchanged.

The spark in her eyes was gradually dying out. Her fingertips were only a hand's breadth away from the medicine bottle, but she never gave up, her will to survive was exceptionally strong.

Even with the ticket seller right in front of her, bending over and staring intently at her, she still stretched out her arm without flinching. However, her body couldn't keep up with her will; after all, she had injured a vital organ.

As Xiangrong's body grew increasingly stiff, the holes in her eyes beneath the ticket seller's mask emitted a strange light, intently and coldly watching the struggle of the person at her feet from life to death, like a wild beast ready to pounce.

"I want to save her!" Da Bai suddenly spoke up, and the girl, who had been acting rather dazed, walked step by step toward Xiang Rong, her pace quickening.

Although all Cheng Shuang saw was a bloody mosaic, she could tell what had happened from A-B's shouts. Now, seeing a long, cascading hair mosaic lying there, with small pieces of blood-red mosaic falling from its chest, she could easily guess the predicament Xiang Rong was facing.

"It's too late!" Ah Le muttered regretfully. Even so, the group still followed without stopping. It wouldn't take much effort and they could save a life, so why not?

Sometimes, the herd mentality of human beings is too terrible. If Da Bai hadn't taken action, others might have watched coldly or hesitated. By the time Xiang Rong was completely exhausted, they would at most have sighed with regret.

The coldness of the defenders is gradually honed in life-or-death situations, but that doesn't mean their original softness has been completely worn away. Their helplessness in going with the flow most of the time better reflects their mentality.

Upon hearing this, Cheng Shuang's heart stirred slightly. She tapped the accelerator under her feet and ran faster than everyone else to the side of the blood-red mosaic. She touched Xiang Rong's face, whose skin was already getting cold, found the right direction, and put a white pill and a red pill into her mouth.

Xiangrong: Child, those are my nostrils, no, no, those are my eyes... Phew, thank you!

The ticket seller gradually straightened up and began to take inventory as if nothing had happened. She didn't seem to be angry with the rescuer for the food she had chosen disappearing. The other protectors, who had been on edge and ready to help, secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

Before the little girl could catch her breath, she uttered two words: "Exchange!"

A woman who had never even shed a tear before, despite being severely injured and nearly dying, now cried uncontrollably. Having escaped death, Xiangrong wept without any grace, stammering, "Exchange!"

The white pill repaired the hole in Xiang Rong's chest, leaving a hideous scar. She got up, picked up the bottle on the ground, poured out the white pill and the red pill, and gave one to Cheng Shuang each.

The little girl accepted it with a cold face, then glanced at Xiangrong's tear-streaked face out of the corner of her eye. She turned her head away arrogantly and walked back quickly, as if someone was chasing her.

Xiangrong wanted to laugh a little. She wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes, her gaze becoming even more alluring and passionate.

She will not forget those who saved her, nor will she forgive those who hurt her.

Perhaps it is precisely because she could still encounter a few good people and warmth in this vast world teeming with demons that she was truly able to persevere and was unwilling to die.

Seeing that Xiangrong was saved, the others immediately stopped and did not approach her easily. They walked back in twos and threes and began to chat leisurely. The tense atmosphere just now disappeared instantly.

The ticket seller, who had been keeping track of the 'repair costs,' was about to put Ah B's corpse into her ticket bag when a female voice stopped her, "Excuse me, can I take this 'ingredient' to the redemption point and pay for it in advance?"

The ticket seller froze, and after a long while, she slowly nodded.

When Cheng Shuang looked back curiously, she saw Xiang Rong carrying a backpack in one hand, a head in the other, and Ah B's headless corpse on her shoulder, walking steadily towards the food street.

The little girl swallowed hard, feeling a renewed sense of admiration for the older girl. No wonder she had managed to survive despite having no skills whatsoever.

That desperate will to survive is truly inspiring.

Da Bai tugged at Cheng Shuang, signaling her not to fall behind. The four young people quickly passed the large-brimmed hats and the water and electricity combination. Cheng Shuang deliberately turned her head to look at the two people whose faces were completely covered by the large hats. She now suspected that the other party had already guessed Xiang Rong's thoughts, which was why they exchanged with Xiang Rong and deliberately brought about A B's death.

But why?

Is it simply a matter of standing up for justice?

Cheng Shuang didn't think much of it, but after taking only two steps, she heard the tall Dahai suddenly speak up, "He Cheng, you dropped something."

The little girl instinctively turned around and saw a slender finger holding a sheet of white mosaic, something that looked like medicine or milk tablets/candy. She shook her head. "Thank you, I didn't lose it." After saying that, she followed Big White and became the fourth person to enter the passageway that suddenly opened up in front of them, allowing only one person to pass at a time.

Suddenly, a deafening roar of music filled the air, accompanied by the aroma of food, as if one had returned to the human world.

A variety of food stalls filled the large open space, where the other three walls were completely hidden, to the brim. All sorts of signs were set up on the stalls, and the noise of people calling out to customers and the music blended together. In an instant, only four words came to everyone's mind—a night market for snacks.

'Shu La Legend, a century-old establishment—offering hot and sour noodles and spicy hot pot.'

"Braised duck necks, duck wings, duck intestines—the authentic flavors of this old street."

'Old Xu's grilled gluten and grilled squid.'

'Good and authentic rice noodle rolls are always good and authentic!'

"Spicy rabbit heads, you won't go bald after eating them!"

You can find all the stalls you can see in the real world here, and even more and more diverse ones, making the competition quite fierce.

If similar stalls are located close together, it can definitely lead to fierce competition between the two owners.

Unfortunately, the vendors were no longer friendly uncles and aunties, but strangely shaped, ferocious monsters. They openly revealed their differences from humans, immediately sobering up the maintainers who had just entered the place.

Humans are now nothing more than uninvited intruders; in this land of death, the wanderers are the true masters.

The everyday joys of life can also be a feast for the homeless!
