The little girl paused for a moment. She wasn't brave; it was just instinct that drove her to reach out and save the person. Because she was young, she didn't think too much about the gains and losses, but that doesn't mean she didn't cherish her own life.
Cheng Shuang, the handsome young man, was no stranger to the convenience store. He was a college student who had been hired as a temporary worker. He was usually quiet and didn't interact much with the young woman.
Realizing that these three people had pulled them out of danger, Cheng Shuang's little face showed relief at surviving the ordeal. She let out a long sigh of relief and said in a hoarse, childish voice, "Thank you, uncles and brothers!"
"You're welcome! Thanks to your reminder, little friend, we were able to get here safely." The big man looked a bit fierce, but he was actually quite honest.
Cheng Shuang smiled, revealing her teeth, and saw the young man give her a deep look before turning away.
She pursed her lips, her eyes dimmed, but she sensibly refrained from saying anything to stop her.
Everyone is in a state of constant fear and uncertainty, and even if she knows the young man, it doesn't mean he'll be willing to take her, a little burden with poor health, along.
The doctor's advice that the little girl heard most often was to relax and not overthink things, which would increase the burden on her heart. So, she has been able to think things through since she was a child and quickly adjust her mindset, telling herself that in this situation, she should learn to rely on herself and not cause trouble for anyone.
Cheng Shuang, who had just propped herself up to observe her surroundings, was suddenly stunned.
No wonder the sky is so colorful. Here, birds sing and flowers bloom, laughter fills the air, and childlike music drifts in and out. It's more like a cozy haven for children than any of the dangers outside.
However, in this comfortable haven, every building appears to be in a low-pixel state, as if it has been photoshopped with a highly transparent mosaic.
Like a fairytale-like ancient European town, the houses are scattered in a charming way, and a small castle can be seen halfway up the mountain and a white lighthouse on the other side. Soft and gentle music plays in the streets, and the occasional person or creature passing by is paper-thin, immediately distinguishing the intruders from the original inhabitants.
Cheng Shuang's face was filled with distress; there had never been any such buildings in the vicinity of her residence.
"As soon as we entered, the insects turned to ash, and with a gust of wind, they were gone." The man with the briefcase spoke with a somewhat neurotic tone, whether it was because he had always been like this or because of the negative effects of his later escape was unclear.
Not only were the insects gone, but even the teddy bear that had been with her for six years was lost outside in the thick fog.
The little girl clenched her arms, feeling uneasy and lost with emptiness in her chest.
They found themselves away from the crowds under the stone bridge in the town, and were able to rest and relax.
Everyone knew that this place still had an eerie atmosphere, but no one wanted to spoil the mood and break the peace. They just wanted to preserve this moment of tranquility and take advantage of the opportunity to recover their strength.
Perhaps because she dared not truly relax, the woman who had fainted woke up not long afterward, and the four of them sat together and briefly introduced themselves.
The bald man's name is Ma Guoxu, he is thirty-nine years old. Because he has been working in the city for a long time, his wife back home divorced him.
The man with the briefcase was named Sun Han, 28 years old, and claimed to be the president's assistant at a large company.
The fair-skinned, slightly plump woman was named Liu Juan. She was twenty-six years old, spoke softly, and had worked as a customer service representative for five years.
After the conversation, there was a deathly silence, and everyone stared blankly at this unfamiliar place.
Liu Juan finally couldn't help but rub her eyes to force back the tears. "What's wrong with this world?" she choked at the end of her sentence, which turned into a soft sob.
"Alien invasion? Apocalyptic destruction? A mass ghost encounter?" Sun Han replied blankly, "Anyway, a lot of people died."
Liu Juan choked.
Actually, she wasn't asking for the reason. After all, the incident happened so suddenly that ordinary people wouldn't have the right answer. She just wanted to vent her fear and helplessness.
Another silence fell; no one felt any desire to chat until they were completely safe.
After a moment, the little girl raised her eyes and looked intently at the adults. "Uncle and sister, do you feel anything different about your bodies?"
"A different feeling?" Ma Guoxu scratched his head. "Does the fact that my strength recovers quickly count?"
After Cheng Shuang's reminder, several people spoke up.
Not only did they regain their energy in a short time, but since they hadn't even had a sip of water in the morning and had been on the run for a long time, their throats, which had been hoarse from shouting, didn't feel any discomfort, and they even lost the basic feeling of hunger.
Not only did her physical abilities improve, but Liu Juan's nearsightedness was also corrected, and she now has normal vision. Ma Guoxu suffered a work-related injury at the construction site, shattering his right little finger, but now all five fingers are intact.
Sun Han, looking vacant and seemingly nervous, did not continue to answer the question.
Cheng Shuang touched her chest. Her heart, which had been beating irregularly for a long time, had become steady and strong. Although she still felt a little stuffy and uncomfortable, it was much better than before when she was so weak that she couldn't even walk two steps quickly.
Freed from the torment of her long-standing illness, the little girl was overjoyed, but knew it wouldn't be appropriate to show her happiness at this time. Her face remained taut, revealing not a trace of emotion.
Having survived several brushes with death, they were still mentally exhausted and naturally failed to notice anything unusual about the little girl, assuming that she was simply overly frightened and nervous.
Moreover, let alone children in their early teens, even adults cannot bear such a terrifying change. They are all filled with anxiety and a sense of imminent danger.
Sitting quietly couldn't offer any solace, so after discussing it, they decided to take action and see if they could find any clues about this eerie town.
