Chapter 74 The Shadow on the Sofa

Cheng Shuang made a point of observing Number Seven and Number Nine, who were two of the three people who reacted when the first storyteller made discriminatory remarks about women.

If Si Rui is a 'ghost', does that mean she supports stories with a high level of horror?

There's a chance the rules weren't set by her, but they were definitely set in a way that favored her. Wouldn't she be more inclined to choose someone who was in her favor to win (within the rules)?

Which one, number seven or number nine, will be the four-petaled one? And which one will be the rosy glow one?

Although Number Two had targeted her, he was the first to clear Cheng Shuang of suspicion. Si Rui had been spying on her with extremely intense eyes, but she dared not be blatant because she had some concerns.

While the little girl racked her brains, both No. 5 and No. 6 finished telling their stories. Their narration was halting and they were clearly not used to public speaking. Their tone was nervous and unfamiliar with storytelling.

Both of them have three bells.

Soon they arrived at number seven, which Cheng Shuang suspected.

He told a story about being alone at home.

"A family of three moved to a newly purchased second-hand school district house because of their child's schooling. The buyer was in a hurry to sell and could only pay in full, but the community and the school are only separated by a small one-way street. The couple gritted their teeth and bought it immediately. To ease the financial pressure, the family of three moved quickly and rented out their old house. They moved in a hurry and didn't have time to renovate. The small one-bedroom apartment has a good layout and a large balcony. The couple decided to turn the balcony into a tatami room for their child to sleep on during the summer vacation. However, the old house has not been renovated, and the child is barely sleeping on the sofa in the living room."

"That day, the parents worked overtime, and their child came straight home from school. He obediently did his homework by himself. After some time, he felt tired, but his parents still hadn't returned, so he lay down on the sofa and drifted off to sleep. It was already late, and because he was worried about his parents, he didn't sleep very soundly..."

In a daze, Cheng Shuang opened her eyes. It was pitch black except for a soft sliver of moonlight filtering through the large balcony. She rubbed her eyes, still feeling very sleepy. Seeing that the lights were off, she knew her parents hadn't come home yet.

She got up from the sofa, turned her head and exclaimed, "Daddy, you're home from get off work?" The little girl said happily, about to rush over but then hesitated, tilting her head and asking, "Why aren't the lights on? When does Mommy get off work?"

The old living room was quiet, and in the moonlight, a tall, dark shadow could be vaguely seen sitting at the corner of the sofa.

He remained silent, looking exhausted, his back hunched but not leaning against the sofa back.

Cheng Shuang got up to turn on the light, but feeling weak and lethargic, she couldn't help but whine, "Daddy, I don't want to move. Can you turn on the light? It's pitch black, I can't see anything!"

The man remained silent, his tall figure sitting firmly on the sofa like a rock.

The little girl suddenly remembered that her older sister had argued with their father that morning about the university she was applying to, and asked timidly, "Dad, are you still angry? My sister has wanted to go to that university for so long..." But she stopped mid-sentence. Did she even have a sister? It seemed like her parents only had her as their child!

The little girl's mind was a bit confused, and she didn't care about anything else. She yawned and continued to curl up on the sofa. This time, with her father beside her, she slept even more soundly.

As Cheng Shuang was sleeping, the phone rang. She reached under the pillow and found her phone, then answered it.

On the other end of the phone was her mother, her voice beaming, "Sweetie, shall I bring you a little cake home tonight?"

"Okay! Mom, come back soon, drive carefully!" The little girl smiled sweetly, feeling extremely happy at the thought of the delicious little cake.

"Don't worry! Dad is driving. Mom's car is in the repair shop. She's going home with Dad..."

Cheng Shuang's heart skipped a beat, and her smile vanished. She listened timidly to her mother's instructions on the phone to lock the doors and windows and wait for them to come home, her eyes involuntarily glancing at the other corner of the sofa.

The man remained silent, his figure hidden in the darkness, the faint light from his phone highlighting the girl's isolation and helplessness.

The phone call ended, and Cheng Shuang's voice was light and cheerful, "Mommy's coming back soon! She bought me a little cake, I'm going to pick her up!" The little girl ran quickly to the door, and just as she grasped the doorknob, a large hand firmly pressed down on her small hand, and a sinister, hoarse voice came from behind her, "Baby, did you like the little cake Mommy bought you?"

In the darkness, the tall figure revealed a set of gleaming white teeth...

When Cheng Shuang woke up, it was already dark. She subconsciously glanced at the other corner of the sofa, but there was no one there. The girl breathed a sigh of relief for some reason.

She found her phone and called her father, who was working overtime. The phone rang a few times but no one answered, so she called her mother instead.

A moment later, the call connected, and the cell phone rang cheerfully in the bedroom.

Cheng Shuang, surprised, took her phone and walked towards the bedroom. The door was half-open and the room was pitch black. She stopped at the door and softly called out, "Mom...Mom, are you home?"

The door creaked open, and a large, white hand suddenly reached out and pressed against the little girl's head. The fingers were strong, and a set of white teeth were faintly visible. "Sweetie, Mommy's home!"...

Cheng Shuang woke up with a start again, her heart pounding wildly. She couldn't remember what nightmare she'd had, but her intuition urged her not to stay in the room alone. The living room was dark and empty. The little girl decisively grabbed her phone and ran to the door. However, when she opened it, a tall figure stood in the dark hallway, flashing a set of gleaming white teeth at her. "Baby, Mommy's home!"...
