The reason Cheng Shuang had to abandon her companions and turn back at this time was, of course, to follow the clues and, through Liu Liu's words, let the people of that village know that all their neighbors had perished in the fire. Then, she would like to see who was the one who reported this to their superiors.
Perhaps that person is the key to the return ticket.
Cheng Shuang sneaked back to Liu Liu's village and hid in the gap behind the old house. People from the bamboo houses would occasionally come out to look at the river and chat about their worries. They mistakenly believed that Liu Liu had taken her away, so so far, they had no idea that everyone in the other village had been wiped out.
It seems that the human-headed fish understands Liu Liu's different situation.
This reminded her of the mermaids from another village who had been burned to death. None of them, like Liu Liu, could transform into mermaids. Perhaps that's why they attacked Du Jun without hesitation? The young man was just unlucky; the place he landed in didn't fall for the mermaid princess trope.
Not long after hiding in the crevice, the monster called the police.
Cheng Shuang looked up and saw a small boat slowly drifting on the water. As it got closer, she could see Liu Liu lying on it, fast asleep, as the boat went upstream.
The little girl perked up and thought to herself: Here it comes.
The boat can only seat two or three people. It's flat and takes up very little space. It doesn't look much bigger than a surfboard, and it can be easily moved into a bamboo house for safekeeping.
Because the boat was small, Liu Liu's legs were soaked in the water for a long time while she was lying on her side, but she didn't feel any swelling at all.
The man paddling was strong, but he couldn't keep up with going back against the current. He was covered in sweat and when he reached the bamboo bridge, he was pulled up by several villagers who happened to be on the bridge.
The male teacher looked grave, and without even glancing at Liu Liu, who was sleeping on the boat, asked in a low voice, "Where is that outsider child?"
"I didn't see her!" The man who found Liu Liu shook his head. "I only saw Liu Liu floating on the water."
The male teacher glanced at the sky, exchanged a blank stare with his sister, and then said in a cold voice, "Carry Liu Liu inside and lock her up."
