He didn't come back until the next morning. His face was full of fatigue. He washed his face, changed his clothes, and hurried out to take up his duty.
Sun Yannan had no choice but to go see her mother-in-law alone. After drinking the tea she offered her and giving her a bracelet, her mother-in-law whispered to her, "Where's Xipa?"
She didn't know how to answer. They had not consummated their marriage, and she couldn't hand over the veil.
Shi Wei suddenly came in, handed her mother a wedding scarf, and said with a smile, "My brother said my sister-in-law forgot something, so he asked me to bring it over."
When the two came out, Shi Wei told her that after her elder brother got on the carriage, he remembered this matter and came back to cut his finger, smear it on the veil and asked her to bring it to him.
Shi Wei said, "Don't think too much, sister-in-law. It's not because of you. My eldest brother left home last night and was afraid that if mother knew about it, she would be angry with Sister Rong again."
Sister Rong, the fourth daughter of the Rong family, Rong Li, is Shi Yue’s childhood sweetheart.
Not long after, Rong Li came to visit and said that due to health reasons, he was unable to attend Shi Yue's wedding banquet, and this time he came specially to visit his sister-in-law.
The words were so polite, so Sun Yannan had to entertain him well. He asked Shi Yue what kind of dishes he would prepare. Shi Yue said, "Just like usual."
Rong Li was a lively and cheerful girl. It was not until the meal time that Sun Yanan finally understood what Shi Yue meant when he said that it would be fine as usual.
After all, there were guests coming, so Sun Yanan added a lot of dishes to the usual menu, but Rong Li and Shi Yue liked to eat almost the same things.
"Oh, the bamboo shoots are especially good this season. I've been thinking about that mushroom soup for a long time. When we were little, we used to fight over these little dumplings. Do you remember how we always quarreled over the last piece of cake?"
Shi Yue looked at her and smiled gently: "When have I not given in to you?"
Sun Yanan finally realized that what Shi Yue liked to eat was also what Rong Li liked to eat.
The dishes she had prepared with such good intentions were not touched by anyone except her, and in the end, they were cleared away almost untouched.
Shi Wei looked at her and laughed at her: "I told you, you are always doing this kind of useless work."
I don’t know if it’s because she strongly opposed Rong Li’s marriage, but the mother-in-law didn’t come out to meet the guests.
Sun Yanan ate this meal like an outsider. Shi Yue, Shi Wei and Rong Li chatted and laughed. The past they talked about was full of memories that Sun Yanan had no chance to get a word in or to continue.
Her husband, who was usually cold and indifferent to her, now smiled and was gentle and warm.
The meal was a joyous occasion for the three of them, but Sun Yanan felt awkward and embarrassed.
When they were about to see the guests off, Rong Li said to Shi Yue, "Feng Qi, please walk with me. The weather is so nice today."
She then turned to Shi Wei and said, "Do you want to join us?"
Shi Wei laughed and said, "I'm not going. Is it going to be like before? If I go with you, my brother will definitely scold me when I come back."
So Rong Li and Shi Yue blushed, one with red face and the other with red eyes. They looked at each other, and Shi Wei smiled beside them. No one felt the need to consider Sun Yannan who was standing beside them.
Sun Yannan returned to the courtyard alone and said to her maids Xiaonian and Xiaoyue, "Let's move back to our own courtyard."
When they got married, the bridal chamber was set up directly in Shi Yue's yard. From then on, it seemed natural for Sun Yanan and Shi Yue to live together in this yard.
Although they never consummated their marriage, the two got along well. Once, she got up late, and the maids smiled when they saw her.
Looking in the mirror, Shi Yue drew six cat whiskers on her face and put some ink dots on her nose and forehead, making her look like a kitten.
But Sun Yanan's face seemed to absorb ink very well. He washed it vigorously for a long time. When Shi Yue came back in the evening, the ink marks on his face could still be vaguely seen.
Shi Yue was overjoyed when he saw this. He reached out to pinch it, then called for water and wiped it for a long time. Convinced that the mark would not go away for a while, he said to her, "It's my husband's fault. How will you punish me, my lady?"
Sun Yannan asked him to write, "I am happy to see the southern mountains, I am happy to see the northern snow, I am happy to see the spring flowers, I am happy to see the autumn moon, I am happy to see my wife."
I was punished to write it ten times and post it around the room.
Although they slept properly that night, Shi Yue suddenly turned over and hugged her, still talking in his sleep: "My wife is like the mountains in the south and the snow in the north, the flowers in spring and the moon in autumn. I am delighted to see her."
Sun Yannan laughed, thinking that she might have punished her husband so much that he was confused.
But today during the meal, she realized what it meant to be happy to see someone. As long as Rong Li sat there, Shi Yue would smile at her when he looked at her. In comparison, seeing that she was happy, he probably just thought he was funny.
She recalled once hearing Shi Wei say to her brother, "Mother wants to set up the wedding room in your yard. She's really worried that you won't live with that woman."
She didn't take it to heart at the time, as Shi Wei never had anything nice to say about her.
Shi Wei called her "that woman", and affectionately called Rong Li "Sister Rong", and they could tell the difference between close and distant, and favor one over the other, at a glance.
Now it seems that the mother-in-law has been worried about this for a long time, so she did not set up the bridal chamber in Sun Yanan's yard. She was probably afraid that her son would rarely come to his daughter-in-law's yard after getting married.
Since he was getting married in his son's yard, Shi Yue had to live there.
Sun Yannan suddenly felt very bored, so she and her maid packed up and moved back to her own courtyard, which she had hardly lived in since her marriage.
