Chapter 52 Doorway

The atmosphere in the Wang family was unusual today. Shangshu Wang came into the house without saying a word. His son Wang Suwen followed behind him and did not dare to go back to his room.

Seeing his father go directly to the study, he followed him in. Shangshu Wang was furious. As the head of the civil servants, it was his duty to seek justice for the civil servants. How would all the civil servants view him after this incident?

Even without considering his father's position, this rebellious son had something to say without informing him in advance. He was stabbed in the back by his son in front of the entire court, which chilled the civil officials and made the military generals laugh at him.

The servants brought tea, and Minister Wang had someone guard outside the study. The ruler that Wang Suwen was beaten with as a child had not been used for many years.

Seeing that his father's hands were shaking while drinking tea, Wang Suwen knelt down resignedly and waited to be beaten.

Mrs. Shen of the Wang family was a person who was open-minded. Not long after her daughter-in-law Zhao Xinran came into the family, she saw that she was a reliable person, so she handed over the power of housekeeper in the mansion to her daughter-in-law.

Wang Suwen was being beaten in the study, with the sound of slapping going on. Zhao Xinran got the news first, but she didn't dare to break into the study, so she went to find her mother-in-law.

Shen brought Zhao Xinran into the study. She had come to rescue her son, but when she saw Minister Wang's face pale with anger, she was startled. She hurried over to hold her husband's hand to try to persuade him. The hand felt cold, and she became even more panicked. "It doesn't matter if this evil son is beaten to death, but don't let him get sick from anger."

Wang Suwen: ...

Zhao Xinran: ...Wrong person? Are you looking for a doubles match?

Seeing her husband kneeling on the ground, she knelt beside him. Zhao Xinran made up her mind and decided to throw her sister-in-law out to attract fire.

Since Zhao Xinran was the housekeeper, she was well aware of the holes in the backyard wall. She usually helped her sister-in-law Wang Xipei to escape. Today, she knew that her sister-in-law had gone out through the wall again, so she had asked someone to keep an eye on her. However, she didn't do anything because she found out that she had gone to Ningyuan Marquis Mansion.

Shen was still trying to persuade her husband: "Just let this rebellious son kneel in the ancestral hall. Why bother watching him get angry? It's not worth it to get angry yourself. If you still can't calm down..."

Wang Suwen: My dear mother, thank you. Do I have to kneel in the ancestral hall after being beaten?

Before Shen had finished speaking, Zhao Xinran hurriedly said, "Father and Mother, Xi Pei is missing. The gatekeeper hasn't seen her leave. There's a hole in the wall in the backyard. She might have left through there."

This startled both father and son, and even Shen Shi was shocked. Before leaving, she had gone to see her youngest daughter, who was embroidering in her yard. Alas, of the two daughters and one son, Lingyi was the only one who was worry-free.

A few people followed Zhao Xinran to the backyard. Shen asked if they had sent anyone to look for him. Zhao Xinran thought that if they had sent someone to follow him, that probably counted, so he quickly replied that they had. When everyone saw the hole in the wall, they were all speechless.

Wang Suwen glanced at his wife with a bit of complaint: "Since you are the housekeeper, how could you not know about such a big hole in the wall? You can install a door here, right?"

Zhao Xinran had no other choice. Her sister-in-law had dug a lot of holes in the wall, and she seemed to know about it herself. She had someone fill in a few holes and repaired them. Zhao Xinran simply left her with only this one.

Wang Xipei enlarged the hole a little to avoid messing up her hair and headdress, and they both asked someone to reinforce it.

Zhao Xinran: In this awkward silence, should I demonstrate how Xipei is blocking the float?

The maid that Wang Xipei left in the mansion to wait for him tried to hide in the corner.

The fifth prince followed Wang Xipei and saw that she was familiar with the place. After walking around the backyard wall for a short while, he and the maid knocked on a hole in the wall. Usually, this hole in the wall was blocked by a floating board from the inside, and the little maid would open the floating board after hearing the secret signal.

After a while, the float opened, and Wang Xipei and the little girl slipped in smoothly.

The fifth prince followed and said, "This hole... this door... this... forget it."

The fifth prince had probably stayed in the Ren family army for too long, so he also went over.

As soon as Wang Xipei stood firm, she saw the four giant Buddhas before her. She was terrified: Calm down. Should she admit her mistake first and then act coquettishly, or act coquettishly first and then admit her mistake? Which one was better? Or was there no way around it?

Before she could think it through, she saw the eyes of the four giant Buddhas widened even more.

Wang Xipei looked back and saw that there was someone who seemed even more embarrassed than her.

The Fifth Prince hadn't expected this to happen. He was simply curious. Alas, had he lost his mind? What should he say now? He had just left the court, and he didn't expect to see him again so soon?

The four Buddhas' gazes returned to Wang Xipei. Wang Xipei saw clearly what the man behind him was wearing and judged it to be a prince. The Fourth Prince? Wasn't he known for his elegant demeanor? He didn't seem like someone who would crawl through a hole in the courtyard wall. The Fifth Prince? He seemed capable of such a thing.

Wang Xipei turned around and thought: Why are you all looking at me? This person has nothing to do with me. I didn't bring him here. Wang Xipei immediately stood next to her parents, brother and sister-in-law.

The Fifth Prince coughed awkwardly, and Minister Wang recovered first, bowing to him. Shen, Wang Suwen, Zhao Xinran, and Wang Xipei also bowed. The women left, while Minister Wang and Wang Suwen accompanied the Fifth Prince in recounting his story.

Because of his royal status, the Fifth Prince was accompanied by Minister Wang. The Fifth Prince said, "Thanks to your son's speech in the court today, the Ren family army has avoided verbal and written criticism. I know Minister Wang is the head of the civil service, and what your son said today will surely put him in a difficult position. I've come this time to express my gratitude to your son and to make a promise to the Minister: I will do my utmost to help him resolve the resentment among the civil servants."

After hearing this, Minister Wang was moved. He had something to ask. If the Fifth Prince could help him...
