Chapter 27 Pan Kang

After securing enough food for two adult men for two days, Ye Zi lost interest in continuing the hunt; her priority was to go back and finish building her house.

After preparing her prey, Ye Zi walked towards the camp.

Back at camp, the yellow whale had collected a pile of suitable stones.

Seeing Ye Zi return so quickly surprised him, but considering Ye Zi's ability to shoot four arrows in three seconds, he understood and asked with a smile:

"How was the harvest?"

Ye Zi happily untied four pheasants from her waist. The yellow whale had already seen them and wasn't surprised.

Then Ye Zi took out the porcupine strapped to his back, which was the key point, because Huang Jingyu had already seen the leather rope tightening around his shoulders.

However, the leaf's body was much larger than the porcupine's, completely blocking the view, so the yellow whale couldn't see anything from this angle.

"Is that a porcupine?"

Ye Zi nodded and said:

"Yes, I checked it out, and there were no lesions in the internal organs, so it's safe to eat and I brought it back."

"Not bad, not bad, enough for the two of us for a day."

Ye Zi smiled mysteriously, then started taking eggs out of her pocket.

Wild eggs are not as big as domestic eggs, but this batch wins in terms of quantity, thirteen eggs.

"Wow, eggs too? You've had a great trip!" the yellow whale exclaimed in surprise again.

"Not bad, I was lucky."

After chatting for a while, Ye Zi took the prey to clean it. The porcupine was the meal for the day, the four pheasants would be eaten tomorrow, and the eggs would be kept as a reserve.

After tidying up, Ye Zi let the yellow whale rest while he continued searching for suitable stones.

It wasn't that Ye Zi was trying to curry favor with Huang Jingyu, but rather because of physical limitations. Huang Jingyu didn't have any special abilities or the Thousand-Pound Pill to temper his body and increase his strength.

Judging from that pile of rocks, the yellow whale hadn't been idle since he left.

Yellow whales are indeed physically stronger than ordinary people, but that's about it.

Collecting suitable stones is not as simple as just finding stones and moving them over.

The stones are mainly concentrated on the small hill behind the camp. Almost every stone requires a pickaxe; some are buried in the soil, while others are simply pried off from large rocks.

Collecting stones under these circumstances is definitely tiring, and the yellow whale also has another task: cooking.

Yellow Whale is a better cook than Leaf, so this task can only be assigned to him.

Leaf picked up his pickaxe and went to look for stones, while Yellow Whale rested for a while and then began to prepare lunch.

The porcupine leaves were indeed washed, but that was all; the butchering process hadn't been done yet.

Ye Zi spent an hour working on it, and looking at the collected materials, she silently calculated that it should be about time.

The yellow whale was ready, and half a porcupine was already on the grill.

Half a porcupine may not sound like much, but it still weighs six or seven pounds, enough for two people.

Ye Zi turned her head and started mixing the mud. After the mud was mixed, the roasted pig from the yellow whale was ready.

Wash your hands before eating.

After finishing her meal, Ye Zi continued mixing mud, but this time her main purpose was to add the chopped hay.

Fortunately, Ye Zi brought an entrenching tool; otherwise, the difficulty of mixing the mud would have increased dramatically.

Once the mud is prepared, the house construction officially begins. The process is the same, except for two more steps, but it's not very difficult.

After the ground was paved with stones, Ye Zi began to apply mud. To prevent smoke from coming out, the entire kang (heated brick bed) was covered with mud, inside and out.

After applying a thick layer of mud, stones are piled up from all sides, one layer of stone and one layer of mud, with a fire channel in the middle.

Using the long, narrow stones they found, two fire channels were left in the middle of the kang (heated brick bed).

This ensures both the stability of the stones and the temperature of the heated kang (a traditional heated brick bed).

After the kang (heated brick bed) is set up, the long, narrow stones cannot be laid on it yet, because a layer of mud needs to be applied inside, as mentioned before, to prevent smoke from leaking out.

After this layer of mud is applied, it needs to solidify naturally. Then, it needs to be dried in a fire pit and checked for cracks. If there are any, a new layer of mud needs to be applied.

The applied layer of mud does not need to be baked dry; it only needs to solidify naturally.

Then they laid out those long, narrow stones to serve as the surface of the kang (heated brick bed).

The process is the same: apply a layer of mud and lay down a stone.

After these stones, which will serve as the surface of the kang (heated brick bed), are laid out, you can light a fire in the stove pit. While drying the mud, you also need to check for any leaks.

After everything is in order, apply a thick layer of mud to the stone that will serve as the surface of the kang (heated brick bed), and also apply a layer of mud to the outside of the kang.

The fire in the stove pit must not be extinguished; it must be kept burning until all the mud is dried.

It took three days just to build the kang (heated brick bed). After the kang was dried, Ye Zi and Huang Jingyu carefully checked it to make sure there were no leaks before they were relieved.

Three days may seem like a long time, but it's not. Days are relatively short in Alaska, and the day Yezi went out hunting was the first day. The two of them didn't leave the camp on the second day.

The leaves were used to build a kang (a heated brick bed), and the yellow whale dug grooves in the tree trunks to prepare for building a house. On the morning of the third day, they went out hunting.

Now that the heated kang (traditional brick bed) is ready, building a house will only take one day, or at most two days.

Moreover, the family members divided the work: Yellow Whale was responsible for hunting and cooking, while Leaf was responsible for building the house, since Leaf had experience in building houses and was strong.

The first day was the day the yellow whale arrived at the survival site. On the morning of the second day, the two took the initiative to dig a shelter pit in the afternoon, and the same thing happened on the third day.

On the morning of the fourth day, Yezi went out hunting alone, and in the afternoon she began to build the heated kang (a traditional heated bed). The kang was completed on the sixth day.

On the seventh day, the leaves built a house, and the yellow whale went out hunting.

On the afternoon of the eighth day, the camp's third shelter was completed.

On the morning of the ninth day, the two went out hunting together because there was no food left at the camp.

The hunting results of the yellow whales in the past few days were only enough for the two of them to eat and stay warm, with no surplus.

After getting up in the morning, Ye Zi took out four wild eggs and boiled them.

When going out hunting, you can't go out on an empty stomach. If there's nothing to eat at the camp, then you can only go out hungry. But they have reserves. Why not eat now and save them to hatch chicks?

So Yezi decided to eat something first, since he didn't want to go hunting on an empty stomach.

After leaving the camp, the yellow whale glanced back at the campsite. Smoke was rising from the three shelters, and it couldn't help but grin.

"Given these conditions, this is pretty much the ceiling for wilderness survival."

Ye Zi followed the yellow whale's gaze and nodded, saying:

"Shelter, water, fire, food—we're just missing food reserves."

"Once Er Ya arrives, we'll take some time to put up some barricades around the camp; that would be perfect."

The yellow whale nodded, as if remembering something, and then said:

"Speaking of Er Ya, there's another problem. Although she has a heated kang bed in her room, she doesn't have any bedding yet. This needs to be resolved as soon as possible."
