Chapter 121 Evidence of the Dead

The appearance of this note made Su Jiafeng uneasy. After quickly clearing away the dishes, he decided to go out and find out what was going on.

He even had a fruit knife on hand, just in case he was worried that someone was setting him up.

However, when he arrived at the west alley entrance, he was stunned!

The person in the alley turned around upon hearing the sound, their eyes lighting up. They immediately turned and ran towards him, calling out joyfully, "Jiafeng!"

The familiar figure left Su Jiafeng completely bewildered—it really was Xin'er! How could she have returned?

Before Su Jiafeng could react, Xin'er excitedly hugged him, her heart finally at ease. "Jiafeng, you're finally here! I was so afraid you wouldn't want to see me."

Suddenly embraced, Su Jiafeng was momentarily dazed, but quickly regained his senses, slowly pulling her arms away and apologetically saying:

"Xin'er, there's something I want to make clear to you."

Seeing that he seemed a little unhappy, Xin'er was afraid of hearing something bad, so she spoke first: "Let me tell you, I have something very important to tell you."

It was indeed my fault for leaving without saying goodbye, but it's not that I didn't like you. It's just that I couldn't get over my mother's death, so I chose to run away.

I always thought my mother harmed Su Gege because of me, until one day, the sachet my mother left me got dirty. After washing it, I was worried that it would fade when it was drying, so I turned it over. That's when I discovered that there were words on the strip of cloth inside the sachet!

After reading those words, I realized that my mother's act of drugging Su Gege's rouge was not her own intention, but rather she was instructed and coerced by someone!

Upon hearing this, Su Jiafeng had already guessed, "You mean Princess Jin?"

Nodding, Xin'er said with certainty, "It was her! It was written clearly in the sachet that when I was punished to work in the laundry, Princess Jin told my mother that the Fourth Prince wanted to kick me out of the mansion. In order to protect me, my mother repeatedly asked Princess Jin to plead with the Fourth Prince for me."

Jin Gege then instructed her to harm Su Gege, saying that after the deed was done, Su Gege would fall out of favor, and she would regain favor, making it easy to protect me.

In a moment of folly, my mother agreed to her request to save me, committing a grave mistake! Later, when the truth came out, fearing she would implicate me, she chose to atone with her death…

At this point, Xin'er was already in tears. "My mother was indeed wrong, but I have no way to repay her kindness. Jiafeng, now I know that my mother was killed by Princess Jin, and it has nothing to do with Princess Su. There is no hatred between our two families, so I can be with you!"

Faced with her expectant, tearful eyes, Su Jiafeng felt a complex mix of emotions. He couldn't bear to hurt her, but some things had to be said.

"Xin'er, actually I wanted to tell you just now that I... am already engaged."

Su Jiafeng was her only thought. The reason she risked running back to the capital was because she wanted to be with him, but she never expected that he was already engaged!

"Who is it? Miss He?" When she was at Baozhen Tower, she felt that He Yuning was very special to Su Jiafeng. Now that she has been gone for so long, she guessed that He Yuning would take advantage of the situation.

Seeing Su Jiafeng nod, Xin'er was shocked and couldn't accept it. "How is this possible? Didn't you say you were going to marry me? Jiafeng, are you upset that I left without saying goodbye? I've already explained the reason to you! Please forgive me this once, okay? I promise you, I will never leave you again!"

With a soft sigh, Su Jiafeng looked away and said in a deep voice, "You have your reasons, and I have never blamed you."

"Since you don't blame me, why did you still get engaged to Miss He?"

"Because..." He didn't want to lie to her, so he told Xin'er the whole story. After listening, Xin'er suddenly felt that she still had hope.

"So you only got engaged to Miss He out of a sense of responsibility, and you don't actually like her, right?"

He Yuning, who was far away, felt her heart surge with emotion and her throat tighten.

She had just taken some oranges to give to Su Jiafeng, but when she saw that he hadn't eaten yet, she hurriedly left Baozhen Tower.

Curious, He Yuning followed and unexpectedly discovered Xin'er's figure!

She sighed inwardly, thinking that fate was truly playing a cruel joke, always making her witness their deep affection and loyalty!

He Yuning endured the heart attack and listened for a long time. When she heard this, she was filled with grief and indignation. Although Su Jiafeng had confessed to Xin'er, he only said that he wanted to get engaged because he had hugged her. The implication was obvious. He Yuning did not want to listen anymore and turned to leave!

Su Jiafeng was unaware of what was happening behind him. When pressed for answers, he thought seriously for a moment and said solemnly, "The matter between Yun Ning and me is a bit complicated and cannot be explained in a few words. In short, I have decided to be with her. There is no possibility between us. I'm sorry."

Xin'er was still in a daze when she arrived here full of expectations, only to find this was the result.

At this moment, she was filled with remorse, regretting that she had left. If she had stayed, Su Jiafeng would definitely have married her, and she wouldn't have had to watch him marry someone else.

The courage she had finally mustered vanished in an instant. Xin'er wept bitterly, her heart aching uncontrollably. She truly couldn't understand why things had turned out this way. Why was fate playing such a cruel trick on her? Was this her retribution?

Seeing Xin'er in tears, Su Jiafeng felt even more guilty, but she still had to say, "Didn't you just say that the sachet was evidence? Could you please help my sister identify Princess Jin?"

At this moment, Xin'er was heartbroken and had no heart to care about those other people's business. "I came back for you, but you have changed your mind. So why should I bother with those disputes?"

"Do you intend to hide like this for the rest of your life? As long as Princess Jin is brought to justice, you will live in constant fear of being assassinated. Only by punishing her can you live a peaceful life."
