The doctor's words, "pregnant," left Su Yushan speechless for a long time. Her watery eyes were filled with fear. They had been together for a year, and she had never gotten pregnant. Now that she was gone, she was pregnant.
What should she do? This child wasn't part of her plans for the rest of her life!
Seeing her astonished expression, seemingly unaware of her pregnancy, Liu was surprised but didn't ask further in front of the doctor. She only said to the doctor:
"Since you are pregnant, could you prescribe some medicine that won't harm the fetus?"
Nodding, the doctor replied, "The medicine for catching a cold used on pregnant women is different from that used on ordinary people. You should have informed them in advance."
Mrs. Liu said with a forced smile, "I only realized it when the pregnancy was still in its early stages!"
Looking the woman up and down, the doctor asked in surprise, "Sister Liu, don't you only have one daughter? And who is this...?"
Su Yushan was still in a daze and didn't reply. Liu was worried about what others would say, so she casually said, "This is a distant relative of mine. We haven't visited each other for many years, and he only recently had time to come and see me."
The doctor asked casually without delving into the details, and then wrote a prescription, asking Qinghe to go and get the medicine.
After seeing the doctor off, Qinghe didn't immediately go to get the medicine. Instead, she turned around and stared intently at her, her eyes filled with doubt.
"First you said you were traveling and having fun, then you said your family suffered a disaster and you're now pregnant. Who are you? You say your name is Xiaoyu, but I'm afraid even that's a fake name. Tell me honestly, what happened to your family? Who is your husband? Why are you pregnant and traveling alone?"
Su Yushan was still reeling from the sudden news when she was suddenly questioned. Feeling guilty and nervous, she didn't know how to respond for a moment.
Seeing this, Liu scoffed, "Qinghe, don't be so fierce, let's talk this out."
Qinghe had his reasons for being so wary: "Mother, her background is unknown. What if she is the family member of a wanted criminal? If we take her in, we could very well get into trouble!"
"Don't talk nonsense. It's not easy for a woman to be stranded alone. She must have some kind of hardship, right?" Liu was kind-hearted and always thought the best of things, so she comforted her with kind words.
Yunfang also advised, "Sister Yu'er, we are just concerned about you, that's why we asked. Don't be afraid. If you're willing, just tell us. If it's really inconvenient, then forget it."
Qinghe, leaning against the table, snorted coldly, "She has been lying all along. When has she ever told you a single truth?"
His teasing made Su Yushan feel even worse. She felt like she was lying all the time and was very annoying. Her eyes became more and more sore, and tears streamed down her face.
The beautiful woman's tears were like pear blossoms in the rain, utterly pitiful. Qinghe had never seen such a sight before and was somewhat at a loss, but she still insisted that she was not wrong.
"Why are you crying? Does crying give you the right to be upset? Everything I said is true, I'm not framing you. My mother and Yunfang have been so good to you, yet you've been hiding things from them. Have you ever thought about how they feel?"
Yunfang was busy trying to persuade him, but he kept making sarcastic remarks, which made Yunfang glare at him angrily. "You're usually so quiet, why are you talking so much today? The tea is getting cold, drink more."
"What kind of tea do you want? Go get the medicine!" Liu pushed him backward. Qinghe couldn't disobey Aunt Liu's wishes, so he had no choice but to take the prescription and get the medicine.
After he left, Su Yushan cried for a long time. The Liu mother and daughter took turns comforting her, and she felt a little better. After calming down, Su Yushan decided to give them an explanation.
Admittedly, they did treat her very well, but after only knowing her for three or four days, she couldn't possibly open her heart to them and tell them everything. After all, you can't judge a book by its cover, and no one could be sure that they wouldn't betray her out of fear.
But if she didn't say anything, it would seem like she was letting them down, so Su Yushan gave an ambiguous answer, "Actually... I don't have a husband, I'm just a concubine of a young master. He has other wives and concubines in his family. They are scheming against each other and always trying to harm me. I have been harmed several times. To save my life, I had no choice but to escape."
Upon hearing this, Yunfang was filled with righteous indignation, "That's outrageous! Where is your man? Did he know? Didn't he stand up for you?"
Su Yushan never wanted to slander Hongli; she only spoke the facts. "He knew, and he had wanted to help me, but that concubine was pregnant, and he couldn't touch her. He could only make me swallow my anger. I couldn't bear it any longer, fearing that I would be harmed again, so I decided to leave."
Upon hearing this, Madam Liu felt pity and sighed, "Alas! Men from wealthy families are all sentimental. He is good to you, but he is also good to others. Your life must be really stifling. Well then! Now that you have come out, let's not talk about those sad things. Now that you are pregnant, you can't travel far anymore. Stay here and take good care of your pregnancy."
"I...I don't want this child." She had already decided to sever all ties with Hongli, but now she was pregnant with his child. If she gave birth to the child, she would be reminded of him every time she saw the child, wouldn't that mean she would be miserable for the rest of her life?
Old Mrs. Liu couldn't stand such words. "Silly girl, don't talk nonsense. It's a blessing from heaven that this child is in your womb. It's your destiny. You must cherish it and protect the child well."
"I've already left him. How can I, a woman, raise a child?" She wanted to continue her journey, to get even further away from the capital. But if she became pregnant, it would likely delay her for a long time.
Liu comforted her, saying, "It doesn't matter if you don't know how to raise a child, I have experience! I only had one son, but he died on the battlefield, and our Liu family line will end. After Yunfang gets married, this old woman will be even more lonely and helpless."
Upon hearing this, Yunfang immediately objected, "Mother, please don't think like that. Even if I get married, I will still be filial to you."
