Hongli told Su Yushan about his idea, and Su Yushan thought it was feasible, so she stopped interfering and let Hongli make the arrangements.
The next day, when Hongli met Su Jiafeng in the palace, he told her about the matter.
Su Jiafeng felt a dilemma. "But I promised Chen Gang that I would take care of his sister and brother. They have only been here for a few days. It doesn't seem appropriate for me to kick them out now."
"While morality is important, family ties are even stronger. You only think about fulfilling your promise to Chen Gang, but have you considered what promises you made to your wife?" The couple had been married for six years, and before their marriage, they had had their share of disagreements, which Hongli vaguely remembered.
"You promised her in front of me and your sister that you would treat her well, but now you're hurting her for someone else's sister. You know she doesn't like Miss Chen, yet you still insist on keeping her here. This isn't about morality; it's about being foolish!"
Mentioning the past, Su Jiafeng's heart skipped a beat. He had been living a happy and fulfilling life all these years and had almost forgotten that he and He Yuning had gone through many twists and turns before they finally got together.
He Yuning could have had better options back then, but she chose him. Now that life is getting better and better, the two of them have had this conflict. Is Yuning being unreasonable, or is he being too stubborn and ignoring her feelings?
Just as he was lost in his memories, he suddenly heard Fourth Master say again: "Of course, if you really like that Miss Chen and want to keep her by your side, then pretend I didn't say anything."
Su Jiafeng quickly clarified, "Brother-in-law, you've misunderstood. I don't like Miss Chen!"
"If you don't like it, then do as I say and send the person away. If you can't even handle this small family matter, how can I expect you to work in the Ministry of War?"
The implication was that if he didn't comply, he could forget about getting a promotion!
With Fourth Master getting involved, the significance of this matter changed.
After returning home, Su Jiafeng found Miss Chen and discussed with her the idea of sending her younger brother to school.
With gratitude in her heart, Miss Chen smiled gently, her moon-shaped eyes curving slightly. "Thank you so much, Brother Su, for taking care of Mo'er's schooling. Your kindness to my siblings and me is as great as a mountain, and I have no way to repay you."
"Please don't say that. I'm so sorry for your brother's passing. It's only right that I take care of you siblings." Every time Chen Gang was mentioned, Su Jiafeng felt guilty. After a moment's hesitation, she continued:
"You know how to make clothes, so your embroidery skills must be quite good, right?"
Miss Chen lowered her eyes slightly and smiled shyly, "I don't have any special skills, except for my embroidery. But my sister doesn't seem to like me very much. She won't let me make clothes for you, so I didn't dare to continue."
“My brother-in-law’s family has just opened an embroidery workshop and they need embroiderers. You can give it a try. They provide food and lodging and the pay is good.”
Upon hearing this, Miss Chen's smile froze, and her moon-shaped eyes glistened. "Brother Su, are you planning to send me away?"
“I didn’t mean that, don’t misunderstand. I was just thinking that you might get bored at home after Mo’er starts school, so I’m helping you find something to do to pass the time.”
This was an excuse that Su Jiafeng had thought about for a long time, but Miss Chen didn't seem willing to be an embroiderer.
"Don't you own a restaurant? How about I go work there? I can do washing dishes or serving food."
Su Jiafeng gave an awkward smile, "The restaurant is not mine, it belongs to my father-in-law, and it belongs to Yun Ning."
"Sister Ning definitely doesn't want me to help; she doesn't like me."
Seeing Miss Chen lower her eyes, seemingly very disappointed, Su Jiafeng chuckled and explained:
"Restaurants are a mixed bag, not suitable for you. You should go to the embroidery workshop instead! It's quiet there, and the work is easy."
With her red lips pressed tightly together, Miss Chen hesitated for a long while before softly saying, "Since it's such a mixed bag, how can you let my sister stay there? There are often rich young men coming and going there. Aren't you...aren't you worried about something happening?"
Su Jiafeng smiled indifferently, "Yun Ning has a strong personality. She grew up in a restaurant and knows some martial arts. No one dares to bully her. Besides, she only has me in her heart and doesn't look at other men."
The couple had always had a good relationship, so Su Jiafeng would not suspect Yun Ning.
With a soft "Oh," Miss Chen sniffed and said with reddened eyes, "Brother Su, is it because my sister doesn't want me to stay here that you sent me to the embroidery shop?"
There were some things that Su Jiafeng couldn't say directly, fearing it would hurt her pride, so she could only say them tactfully:
“You are seventeen years old, the age to get married. If you continue to live here, people will gossip and it will affect your reputation.”
“I don’t care about those things, Brother Su. My elder brother is gone. Now you are family to us siblings. If you hadn’t arrived in time to save me from danger that day, I would have been killed by those bad guys long ago!”
I have no way to repay your kindness, except to stay by your side and serve you.
These were rather serious words. Su Jiafeng chuckled dryly and politely declined, saying, "I have maids at home, you don't need to serve me. Yizhen, you are a good girl, I will find you a good family when the time is right."
He seemed to have misunderstood something. If she didn't explain it clearly today, she feared she might really leave. After hesitating for a while, Chen Yizhen finally mustered up her courage and said to him:
“Brother Su, you still don’t understand what I mean. I don’t want to find a good family. You are the best in my heart. I know that my status is low and I am not good enough for you. I don’t dare to hope for too much. I just want to be a concubine to serve you and my sister.”
Su Jiafeng had always thought that she had no ulterior motives and was only grateful to him. It wasn't until he heard these words that he realized that Yun Ning and her sister were right. She really had some thoughts she shouldn't have had!
