Chapter 51: Are You Starting to Care About Me?

This silent change terrified Su Yushan. From the beginning, she knew very well that she was just one of Hongli's many maids. He had many women around him, and there would be many more new women in the future. He could not be devoted to any one of them. Since it was an unchangeable fact, she could only accept it.

Such a mindset is dangerous, Su Yushan secretly warned herself. She could be grateful for his care, but she must never fall in love with him. Once she started to care about him, her days would become unbearable. Only by letting go and not caring about him could she find peace.

Before she knew it, it started to rain outside. The wind and rain grew stronger and louder, falling into her ears like drumbeats striking the walls of her heart, making her increasingly anxious.

Disturbed, she covered her head with the quilt, trying to hypnotize herself to fall asleep quickly and not to focus too much on Hongli.

However, after resting for an hour in the afternoon, it was too early for her to fall asleep. Su Yushan felt quite annoyed and simply took out a book to read. However, the words did not resonate with her, and she found it difficult to calm down. It wasn't until her eyelids became sore that she slowly closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

In a half-dream, half-awake state, I vaguely heard footsteps. The footsteps were light and slow. Who could it be?

As she vaguely recalled the bizarre scenes from her dream, Su Yushan felt a chill run down her spine. Could it be that the Song family was bothering her again?

Su Yushan was once a staunch materialist, but after experiencing a strange time travel, she truly realized that anything is possible in this world, including ghosts.

The more she thought about it, the more frightened she became, and she gasped, her breathing rapid, "Who? Who is it?"

Nervous, she immediately sat up, wrapped herself in the quilt, and subconsciously leaned against the wall inside the tent, as if she could only feel safe when she was next to the wall.

In the dim light, her eyes were large and bright. Su Yushan stared at the doorway in terror. She didn't even have the courage to lift the curtain, fearing that a terrifying ghost face would appear if she did.

The cotton curtain was then lifted, and a pair of black boots slowly emerged from behind the screen. The person laughed and said, "Who else could it be? Besides me, who else would dare to enter your room at night?"

Hearing the familiar voice, Su Yushan's heart, which had been hanging in her throat, finally settled down. She patted her chest and let out a long sigh of relief. "So it was you. I thought I was having another nightmare, and that it was the Song family coming to find me again."

As they were talking, Hongli approached, raised his hand and lifted half of the curtain. Seeing that she was still in shock, he turned around and went to the table to pour her a cup of tea.

Taking the teacup, Su Yushan drank half of it in one gulp. The warm tea soothed her dry throat and slowly flowed down into her stomach, which calmed her down a little.

Upon closer inspection, she realized something was amiss. "Weren't you at Sister Lan's place? How did you end up here?"

Speaking of this, he himself found it unbelievable. He sat down by the tent and chuckled to himself, "Originally, I planned to stay, but when I was having dinner with her, I was distracted. I kept thinking about what you would eat tonight, whether you would be able to sleep without me, and whether you would have nightmares again. The more I thought about it, the more uneasy I felt, so I made an excuse that I had something to do and that I was supposed to go back to my study, but somehow I ended up here with you."

So he really cared about her feelings? Touched by the words, Su Yushan felt a lump in her throat and couldn't help but loosen the quilt, lean closer to him, hug his waist, and bury her face in his chest.

She held him tightly, without saying a word. Hongli had never seen her so proactive before, and he was somewhat flattered. After a long while, he finally reacted, raising his arm to embrace her back.

"What happened? Did you suffer some injustice?"

Shaking her head, Su Yushan had so much to say, but after thinking for a long time, she couldn't utter a single word, and choked out, "..."

"I'm fine."

Hongli was puzzled and reached out to straighten her, but she kept her eyelashes lowered. So he took the opportunity to lift her chin with his finger, and in the dim candlelight, he could clearly see that her eyes were red.

"Why are your eyes red if nothing's wrong? You're definitely hiding something from me!"

He pressed her for answers, but Su Yushan didn't know how to express her chaotic feelings. After a long silence, she whispered, "Don't be so good to me in the future."

Her voice was low and husky, and he thought he had misheard. After pondering it for a while, Hongli chuckled, "What kind of logic is this? You don't want me to be nice to you, do you prefer me to be fierce to you?"

During the time she had a rash on her face, he stayed with her almost every day. From the time she fell ill to her recovery, his companionship and encouragement gave her tremendous motivation. Su Yushan was grateful but also felt apprehensive.

"Habit is a terrible thing. I'm afraid I'll get used to your care for me, and if one day you find someone new, I'm afraid I'll become the next Kim Min-jung."

So is she saying he's fallen for someone else and is heartless and ungrateful?

Hongli was displeased, but still felt it necessary to explain to her clearly, "When we don't know someone, what attracts us to them first is their appearance. It is undeniable that I was initially attracted to Jin Minjing's appearance, but after getting to know her, I found that she was too spoiled and could not even distinguish between right and wrong. So she gradually lost her attraction to me."

But you are different. After getting to know you, I discovered that we have a lot in common. You always bring me surprises. Many of your ideas and arguments make me think deeply. The connection between our souls is the most precious thing and will not change easily.

After all, Kim Min-jung is also my woman. I have no intention of badmouthing her in front of you; I just want you to understand that my feelings for you are not as superficial as you think.
