Chapter 85 Hongli's Schemes

“How can we verify something like this? Unless…” Just thinking about that scenario made Su Yushan feel uncomfortable, and her delicate brows furrowed. “Ugh! No, that’s too immoral!”

After a moment of surprise, Hongli understood what she meant, and shook his head with a chuckle, "I meant to have the nanny verify it, not to have a man. What are you thinking?"

"Ah? It was a misunderstanding!" Su Yushan smiled awkwardly. After thinking it over carefully, she still felt it was inappropriate. Even if she found a nanny, it would be too much to do such a thing to a young lady. Although she disliked Xin'er, she did not want to humiliate her like this. Only the two of them knew whether this matter was true or false.

After much deliberation, Su Yushan finally shook her head. "What good would it do to verify it? Even if it proves that Xin'er and he didn't have a marital relationship, Jiafeng will still find other excuses. He's determined to protect her, and no matter how much I try to stop him, it's pointless. I'll only gain his resentment, and that won't do me any good."

"Then let's just ignore him and play the long game. Maybe one day he'll suddenly see the light?" Knowing she was upset, Hongli stopped discussing these troublesome matters and took her to the waterside pavilion in the back garden to relax.

It must be admitted that the scenery of the sky and water has a magical power. Whenever I am in it, looking at the shimmering green water and feeling the breeze under the sunlight, my troubled heart will gradually return to peace.

Without waiting for her to speak, Hongli turned his head to look at her, but saw that her cherry lips were tightly pursed and her gaze was distant, and he didn't know what she was thinking.

Recalling the whole incident, Hongli lost all confidence and asked in a low voice, "Do you think I'm useless because I couldn't even catch the murderer?"

Su Yushan turned her head upon hearing this and met his self-reproachful gaze. Her heart softened, and she could no longer bear to blame him.

"I suddenly felt that maybe I shouldn't care so much. After all, there is no absolute fairness in this world. Not everyone's grievances can be redressed, and not every evil person will receive the punishment they deserve. I tried my best, and you investigated diligently, so who should I blame? God? Asking about fate is futile!"

If she had said a few words to him, perhaps he would have felt better. The more she pretended to be relieved and comforted him, the more guilty he felt. Hongli couldn't help but reach out and pull her into his arms, sighing softly:

“I can’t bear to see you suffer even the slightest grievance, yet things always seem to go wrong and you get hurt. Kim Min-jung is certainly despicable, but I’m also at fault for not trusting you and breaking your heart. I promise you, this is the last time. From now on, no matter what happens, I will stand by your side and trust you unconditionally.”

These words sounded familiar; she seemed to have heard them many times before. "I'm afraid that you'll say nice things now, but when something really happens, you'll get angry and forget your promises."

Slowly lowering his arm, Hongli released her, gazed into her eyes, gently stroked her cheek with his thumb, and said softly, "Things don't happen more than three times. I won't make the same mistake again."

He had indeed worked hard these past few days. Every day, after finishing his duties in court, he still had to help her with these trivial matters. Su Yushan was grateful and didn't want to hold it against him anymore, so she nodded in agreement.

I hope there won't be any more misunderstandings between us.

Prayers are always beautiful, but changes are always unexpected. No one can predict the future. Take it one step at a time. If you think too much, you will only add to your troubles.

Su Jiafeng was unaware that Hongli was playing the long game; he thought that the Fourth Prince would only agree to release Xin'er because of his sister.

When he brought the man back to the mansion, Master Zheng and Madam Zheng were completely bewildered and asked him what had happened.

Su Jiafeng didn't shy away from the topic and said in front of everyone that this was his fiancée. Master Zheng was completely bewildered, thinking to himself that Jiafeng had never been engaged, so where did this fiancée come from?

Surprised, he called Su Mingfeng over and asked her what had happened.

Upon learning that her younger brother had brought a girl home, Su Mingfeng rushed over, only to discover that her so-called fiancée was actually Xin'er!

Su Mingfeng flew into a rage, summoned her younger brother, and scolded him for his lack of self-control, giving him a thorough reprimand. Su Jiafeng didn't argue back, only uttering one sentence.

"Fourth Master and Sister have already agreed."

"How could that be?" Su Mingfeng didn't believe Yu Shan would agree to let Xin'er be with Jia Feng. Su Jia Feng then told his brother the same excuse.

Although Su Mingfeng disliked Xin'er, he was a conservative man after all. When he learned that his younger brother had already consummated his marriage with Xin'er, he could no longer stop him, but he also did not want to pay attention to his brother anymore. He just shook his head and sighed, mocking his brother for being foolish. Then he angrily turned his hand and left, no longer caring about him.

After her brother left, Su Jiafeng returned to the room and brought Xin'er a cup of water to soothe her throat.

After a moment of silence, he still felt he should explain things to her.

"I was being presumptuous today. I had no other choice at the time, and in my haste, I made up that excuse, which damaged your reputation. Please forgive me."

Xin'er was indeed thirsty. She finished the entire glass of water, placed the porcelain cup on the small table beside her, looked up at him, and said softly:

"You're doing this for my own good, so how could I blame you? Please don't blame yourself."

She was relieved that he didn't blame her, and smiled gently at her, "You can stay here and recover. I will protect you and won't let anyone hurt you again."

From the time she could remember, she had lived a life of hardship. Later, she was sold into servitude and gained the favor of Jin Minjing, which made her life a little better. But she was just a maid after all. Her master would reward her when he was happy, and beat and scold her when he was unhappy. No one treated her sincerely. Su Jiafeng, however, was so sincere to her. Even though he knew she had used him, he did not hold it against her and still did his best to help her. How could she not be moved by such deep affection?
