Chapter Thirty-Eight: You're So Good to Me

"Let's do it discreetly. How will we know if it won't work if we don't try?" Su Yushan pleaded repeatedly, and Chang Yue finally gave in and agreed to give it a try.

The mansion's storeroom contained paper, brushes, and paints for painting. Changyue went to the storeroom to retrieve the painting supplies as instructed by her master.

It had been a long time since Su Yushan had painted, so she was inevitably rusty. In addition, the brushes used in ancient painting were different from those used in modern painting, so she had to practice and adapt to the new brushes first.

This is a major plan; she needs to carefully plan what to paint in order to get a good price.

When Hongli came over, he saw her painting, but he didn't think much of it, assuming that she was just relaxing and cultivating her mind.

Su Yushan had intended to finish the painting of the trumpet creeper, but unexpectedly, Hongli had someone bring fruit. Upon seeing the large, yellow fruit, her eyes lit up, and she exclaimed in surprise.

"Hey! A pomelo!"

Seeing this, Hongli was quite surprised. "This is a tribute item, which is usually only available to members of the imperial family. How can you recognize it?"

So pomelos were such a rare treat in ancient times? Realizing she had misspoke, Su Yushan was filled with regret and could only continue the charade, making up an excuse:

"Although it is a tribute item, as you know, some high-ranking officials have the means to buy it with a lot of money. I have never eaten it, but I have been fortunate enough to see it. I vaguely remember that it was called pomelo."

Her explanation was reasonable, and Hongli no longer doubted anything. He then had the pomelo peeled open, saying, "This is a Guanxi honey pomelo. It is large and difficult to transport, so not many were sent to the palace. I only got this one."

The eunuch carefully opened it and found twelve segments of fruit. Hongli kept half of it in Tingfeng Pavilion and then ordered the other half to be distributed to the other maids.

It was truly a rare treat to be able to eat pomelos in ancient times. Savoring the juicy flesh, Su Yushan squinted her beautiful eyes with delight, "Mmm---So delicious!"

Hongli only used one petal before washing his hands. Su Yushan, puzzled, asked, "It's delicious, why didn't you eat more?"

“I get to eat this every year, but you haven’t. You deserve to have a taste.”

He left the remaining four petals to her. Su Yushan's heart stirred slightly at this. In modern times, this would be a very common and unremarkable item, but this was ancient times. Even princes could only have one, yet he had given her so many. Grateful, she smiled sweetly.

"Thank you so much, Fourth Master! You're so kind to me!"
