During the twelfth lunar month, the days when the snow melts are especially cold. The north wind blows the snow off the branches, and the rustling sound of the wind makes one's heart tremble. Fortunately, there is an underfloor heating system in the house, so it is still warm.
Su Yushan's pregnant belly is becoming more and more prominent. She has to use a soft pillow to lean against when sitting in a chair, otherwise her back will hurt.
She was delighted when her younger sister came to visit, but upon hearing her sister's words, she suddenly felt worried.
"How could this be? The couple hadn't seen each other for two years and had finally reunited. Shouldn't they be inseparable? Why are they arguing?"
Anxious Yu Chan shook her head and sighed, "When Second Brother came back, he wasn't alone. He also brought a girl and a child. According to him, he met a brother surnamed Chen on the battlefield. That man took good care of him and eventually sacrificed his life to save him."
Before he died, the man entrusted his younger siblings to him, asking him to take care of them.
To fulfill his promise, the second brother made a detour to the town where the Chen family lived on his way back to Beijing, and brought Miss Chen and her siblings to the capital.
Upon hearing this, Su Yushan guessed a possibility and her heart tightened. "Could it be that Jiafeng had something happen with that Miss Chen?"
Yu Chan wasn't sure about the matter either. "Second Brother said their relationship was completely innocent, but Second Sister-in-law saw them embracing that day. When she confronted him, Second Brother explained that Miss Chen was planning to make him clothes and was taking his measurements when she accidentally twisted her ankle. He simply helped her up without actually hugging her."
Su Yushan frowned slightly, a suspicion rising in her mind. "What a coincidence? Miss Chen sprained her ankle as soon as Yun Ning arrived?"
Yunfang, standing to the side, chuckled and said, "It seems that this Miss Chen is also a pure lotus flower!"
Yu Chan wasn't present at the time; she only pieced together the story from her second sister-in-law's account and her second brother's explanation. She didn't know whether the young lady Chen had genuinely sprained her ankle or had done it on purpose.
"My second sister-in-law couldn't stand that Miss Chen. She wouldn't allow her to make clothes for my second brother, nor would she allow her to live here. But my second brother said that she was the relative of his savior, and he had to take care of her. He wouldn't let Miss Chen move out. My second sister-in-law had a fiery temper and couldn't stand being wronged. In a fit of anger, she took her son and went back to her parents' home!"
Although Jiafeng is Yushan's younger brother, she is on Yunning's side in this matter.
"That silly boy Jiafeng, how can he not know how to avoid suspicion? He even brought that girl back to his own courtyard to stay. Isn't he just deliberately making things difficult for Yunning?"
Su Yushan really wanted to go there herself, but she was already seven or eight months pregnant, and it had snowed a couple of days ago, so there was still snow on the road and it was inconvenient for her to go out. So she asked someone to invite her younger brother and sister-in-law over, so that the whole family could sit down together and resolve the matter.
Su Jiafeng arrived quickly after being invited by his sister. He thought Yun Ning had come to Prince Bao's mansion to complain about him, but upon entering, he discovered that Yun Ning was not there.
The servants did go to invite her, but He Yunning declined, citing the restaurant's busy business.
It was afternoon, and the guests were gradually leaving. There wasn't much to do at the restaurant, so He Yunning's words were clearly an excuse.
"My sister-in-law isn't coming; she's probably still angry with Jia Feng," Su Yushan glanced at her brother and grumbled in a low voice.
"Now that you've earned military merit, even your temper has grown! You've even learned to hold grudges against your own wife!"
Su Jiafeng was indignant and couldn't help but argue, "It was clearly her who was angry with me. I had just returned from Junggar, hoping to reunite with my family and finally live a peaceful life, but she was being unreasonable and suspicious of me."
"If another man wanted to make clothes for Yun Ning, could you turn a blind eye?"
Su Yushan's question left Su Jiafeng speechless. He didn't answer, but only explained:
“Miss Chen didn’t mean anything by it. She just wanted to repay my kindness to her and her brother. She doesn’t know anything else, except how to sew clothes. Sister, there’s really nothing between us…”
"Perhaps you don't care about her, but what about her feelings for you?" Although Su Yushan had never met Miss Chen, judging from her demeanor, it was difficult to form a good impression of her.
"A young woman, knowing you have a wife, still takes the initiative to make clothes for you and even takes your measurements herself, without any hesitation. Haven't you ever thought about what she's thinking?"
“Miss Chen comes from the countryside. She is simple-minded and doesn’t understand many rules.”
The word "simple" doesn't apply to everyone. "What's wrong with the countryside? Even if people in the countryside are uneducated, they should still know the proper boundaries between men and women. Stop bringing up her background; that's not a reason for her to overstep her bounds!"
Su Jiafeng was speechless after being refuted by her sister, and stopped arguing. She then changed the subject.
"Making clothes was a breach of etiquette by Miss Chen. Yun Ning was unhappy, and I explained it to her, but she wouldn't let it go and insisted that I kick her out."
Those two siblings are Chen Gang's family! Chen Gang risked his life to save me; if I drive his relatives away, how heartbroken he would be if he knew in the afterlife!
"So what do you plan to do? Let Miss Chen stay at your house indefinitely? If she were honest and well-behaved, that would be fine, but judging from her behavior, she has a lot on her mind! If you let her stay any longer, something bad will happen sooner or later."
"I have no feelings for her, I won't do anything inappropriate, sister, you should trust me!" Su Jiafeng insisted that she had no romantic feelings for Miss Chen, but even so, Su Yushan was still uneasy.
“I believe you, but I don’t believe Miss Chen! Besides, it’s obvious that Yun Ning doesn’t like her. If you had considered Yun Ning’s feelings, you should have sent Miss Chen away, and Yun Ning would naturally stop thinking nonsense.”
Su Jiafeng disagreed, saying, "There's a bully in her hometown who's always been trying to harass her. She can't go back to that place. Now that she and her brother have just arrived in the capital, if I kick them out, how will they find a place to live? I can't do something so immoral!"
Hearing her brother's high-sounding words, Su Yushan's anger flared up. She could even imagine how furious Yun Ning must be upon hearing Jia Feng's explanation.
