“Hang…” Yes, that was the word. Xiao Shaoyao turned pale with fright and pushed Wu Yanxin hard. “Our window is very high. How did that shadow get up there?”
"I'm telling you, you're seeing things, aren't you?" Wu Yanxin yawned, finally opening her eyes to look out the window.
Seeing the shadow, she had the same thought as Xiao Shaoyao before: "Who's outside? What's all the commotion about in the middle of the night?"
The only response they received was the whistling wind, while the shadow remained unmoved.
Wu Yanxin's heart tightened; something about this scene was definitely not right.
There wasn't even a breeze before they went to sleep. If it weren't for the fact that the temperature drops after nightfall in the countryside, they wouldn't have been able to fall asleep so easily.
"I told you, something really wasn't right. If this person was standing below and the shadow was cast on him, it couldn't possibly hang that high. And look at his legs..."
Standing there suspended in mid-air, Xiao Shaoyao no longer had the courage to continue speaking. She hugged Wu Yanxin tightly, "What do we do now? I'm scared..."
Wu Yanxin, “…” I’m scared too…
Suddenly, Li Mingli screamed from next door, accompanied by Wang Yayun's cries, "Help...help..."
Then there was a commotion, which sounded like the men got up.
The shadow outside the window disappeared at that moment, and Wu Yanxin and the others breathed a sigh of relief, but they didn't dare to stay in the room any longer and quickly opened the door and ran out.
When everyone gathered together again, they discovered that they weren't the only ones who had noticed this anomaly; Li Mingli and her neighbors had experienced the same thing.
The different people saw a shadow that looked like a child, as if it was missing an arm or a leg.
The two sides were shocked and several women quickly looked at Xiao Tongke and his group.
Xiao Tongke and the others shook their heads at the same time. They were sleeping soundly and hadn't noticed anything unusual. They only came out after hearing their screams.
The women were terrified. While one person might be mistaken, all four of them saw it.
The four of them huddled together, their eyes warily scanning their surroundings.
"So they weren't wrong after all." Xiao Tongke and the others were starting to believe it.
Although the women are a bit pampered in their daily lives, their moral character is impeccable, and it's impossible for them to fabricate such stories out of thin air.
Besides, everyone is exhausted late at night, so there's no point in doing this fake stuff. It would only tire us out.
They had heard adults say it privately, but since the publicity had been so good for so many years, no one believed it.
Li An swallowed hard. "I remember when we first arrived, the villagers said that this place wasn't very clean..."
Although it wasn't stated explicitly, more than one person said this.
Everyone felt a little uneasy, and looking at the pitch-black surroundings, the chirping of insects seemed particularly clear.
"I dare not live in this house anymore," Li Mingli said, closing her eyes. She was determined not to go into the room again today.
The others shared the same thought, which gave the men a headache; they couldn't just sit there until dawn.
Besides, the flashlights they had wouldn't last until dawn, but they were too afraid to go out into the village to ask for help. In the end, they could only hide in the kitchen, light the stove fire, and boil some water in the pot, feeling that this was the only way to get rid of the chill.
But in this sweltering heat, sitting around the fire was an indescribable experience. Eventually, several men couldn't resist and started to doze off by the door.
Hua Xiangyun saw them all looking listless early in the morning, unaware of how difficult their night had been.
"What's wrong with you guys? Didn't you sleep well?" Hua Xiangyun asked, puzzled. They were all young people, and usually they would be full of energy again after a good night's sleep. It was obvious that they had stayed up all night and exhausted their energy.
Wu Yanxin quickly leaned close to her ear and briefly recounted what had happened the night before. "It was absolutely terrifying. What am I going to do now? I'm too scared to live in that house anymore."
Hua Xiangyun immediately realized the crux of the problem: the Ren family couldn't wait to come down the mountain.
But she couldn't scare her friend like that, so she patted her shoulder and used her spiritual energy to dispel her fear, saying, "Don't scare yourself, it might just be someone's prank."
“A prank?” Wu Yanxin quickly shook her head in denial. “It shouldn’t be that. After all, the shadow was suspended in mid-air, which doesn’t make any sense.”
"It's probably the effect of light and shadow," Hua Xiangyun thought to herself, already trying to figure out how to cover this up. Ren Jiahun really knew how to cause her trouble; this mess was really difficult to clean up.
After hearing Hua Xiangyun's words, everyone had their own doubts. If there was something evil, how come they only discovered it today after living here for so long without noticing it?
Everyone decided to investigate thoroughly when they got back. If it was someone else in the village playing a prank, then they would have to take it seriously.
It's alright for the men to just wander into their yard, but I'm worried about the safety of the women.
The men felt a chill run down their spines; this explained why the discovery was made by the women.
Seeing that they were being guided in this direction, Hua Xiangyun secretly breathed a sigh of relief. This was good, as everyone would be more vigilant in the future and nip any danger in the bud.
While at work, Hua Xiangyun used the excuse of going to the toilet to go to the back mountain and find Ren Jiahun.
As soon as they saw Hua Xiangyun approaching, Ren Guangyi and the others felt a little guilty. Last night, they had gone back to their old ways and it was quite fun to scare people, but when they returned to the mountain, they regretted it immensely.
Hua Xiangyun is a Xuan Master; when she wants to deal with them, she won't reason with them at all, especially since they were in the wrong first.
“Master, please calm down,” Ren Jinpeng, as the patriarch, had no choice but to step forward. “Yesterday, they missed their homes and went back for a stroll, but they didn’t expect to disturb the guests staying there.”
Ren Jinpeng was reminding Hua Xiangyun that the house originally belonged to them, and the others were just staying there temporarily.
Hua Xiangyun said, "We agreed before that we were just staying here and that I would help you maintain the house. Now you've caused this trouble. Aren't you putting us in a difficult position?"
“What’s so difficult about that? Just leave if you’re not staying.” Seeing that Hua Xiangyun didn’t seem angry, Ren Guangyi became bolder. “Our house has been empty for so many years and it doesn’t look that bad. There’s no need to find someone to look after the house.”
Ren Jinpeng pulled his grandson behind him and said, "Master, it's my fault for not teaching him properly. I will definitely give him a good talking to later."
Now that the damage has been done and time cannot be turned back, perhaps we should just let nature take its course.
Hua Xiangyun smiled at Ren Jinpeng, his little scheme completely exposed. "So that's what you were planning, which is why you let them go down the mountain."
Ren Jinpeng led his children and grandchildren back, saying, "Master, you misunderstand. We are just souls, so we'll stay wherever we are."
But that courtyard, after all, holds memories of my grandchildren's childhood, and I always want to go back and take a look..."
