At this moment, Xun Rongchun ran up to them, panting, "I ran into my aunt at the village entrance. She told me to hurry up and call you back. She has already taken the doctor back."
"What else did your aunt say?" Regardless, the Xun brothers still felt more at ease going back to see her.
Hua Baoguo didn't stop him. He knew he would find out about this sooner or later, and it was time to let his two brothers-in-law know, otherwise his savings account would become a hot potato.
It was a collective job, so even though Xun Liangtian and the others were leaving, they still left their wives and children on the land, telling them to hurry up and clear this piece of land they were responsible for.
"Baoguo, why did Mother faint?" Xun Liangcai asked as he walked. It wasn't that he didn't want to run, but there was a thin layer of ice on the ridge, and falling into the ground would waste even more time.
"You'll find out when we get back. I can't really say anything about this." Hua Baoguo lowered his head, it seemed the Yue family wouldn't be getting any peace this year.
After searching for a long time, Liangfen finally found the village doctor and happened to run into her nephew. She gave him some instructions and hurried home.
"Besides fainting, your mother also had some convulsions. Does she have any other symptoms?" Xun Hanmin asked as he walked, carrying his medical kit. "If the situation is serious, we'll have to take her to town. I don't have any medicine here."
"I don't know either," Xun Liangfen said as she ran to her door, only to find it locked from the inside.
"Why is no one home?" Xun Hanmin was dumbfounded. Wasn't there a sick person at home? Why was the door closed?
Xun Liangfen saw that the door was bolted from the inside, so she quickly knocked on the door, "Father, Baoguo, I've brought the doctor, please open the door quickly."
Just as she kept knocking on the door, it opened from the inside. Xun Xingshun glared at Xun Liangfen before saying to Xun Hanmin, "Hanmin, it's alright now, he's recovered. I'm sorry to have troubled you with this trip."
"It's good that you're alright," Xun Hanmin said, though he was curious, he didn't ask any more questions. "If you feel unwell again, go to the hospital for a check-up as soon as possible. You know, I only treat headaches, hot feet, and sprains."
Xun Xingshun blocked the doorway. "Thank you for the reminder, but I have something to do at home today. I won't invite you in."
When Xun Hanmin saw the village chief blocking the doorway, he knew he was no longer popular, so he said a few words and left.
Not long after he left, Xun Liangtian and Xun Liangcai arrived at his home.
"Father, is Mother alright? Didn't my little sister say Mother fainted?" Xun Liangtian asked loudly as soon as he entered the door.
Gu Yu, who had been hiding silently in the main room, finally found someone to rely on and burst into tears, "Eldest brother, second brother, you're finally back! If you hadn't come back, your father would have driven me to my death."
These shameless words made Xun Xingshun clench his fists.
"Alright, stop wailing. Since all the children are here, let's close the door and talk things out." Hua Xingshun closed the door again and led everyone into the main room.
He said to Hua Baoguo, "Baoguo, can I borrow the things I gave you before?"
Hua Guo hurriedly took out his savings book and banknotes, and Xun Xingshun spread everything out on the table. "Look, this is all what your mother saved. What do you two brothers want to say?"
Xun Liangtian and Xun Liangcai glanced at them and their expressions changed drastically. "Where did all these come from?"
They all knew how much savings the family had. Considering the family's expenses over the years, plus the cost of building the house, it was already a miracle they hadn't suffered a famine.
Where did such a large sum of money come from? Their family is a poor peasant family with impeccable revolutionary credentials.
After learning the whole story, the Xun brothers squatted there with shame on their faces.
Xun Liangfen looked at the numbers on her bankbook and could hardly believe it.
Over the years, she thought all her efforts were to help her family, but she never expected that her mother would keep them all.
"Little sister, how could you be so silly? You haven't even said a word all these years."
No sooner had Xun Liangtian finished speaking than Xun Xingshun snorted and said, "That depends on what your mother said to her."
Xun Liangfen was a little sad. "Mother told me not to go around making a fuss, so that Father and Brother wouldn't look bad."
Gu Yu felt that her support had arrived. "Who am I doing all this for? Isn't it for you two brothers and our family's children?"
They're all grown up now, and they'll be getting married and building houses soon. With the meager subsidies your dad gets as village head, can you afford it?"
"If you put it that way, then everyone else in the village should just give up on living." Xun Xingshun saw that her eyes were somewhat unfriendly. He really hadn't beaten her enough, otherwise she wouldn't dare to be so unreasonable.
He carefully sorted through the money and banknotes, saying, "These are all the money your mother managed to save by taking all of your sister's wages. Now it's time to return them to their rightful owner."
He was informing them, not discussing it with them. After speaking, he handed the money to Hua Baoguo in front of everyone, saying, "Go back and calculate it carefully with Liangfen. If it's less than expected, I'll make up the difference later."
“There’s too much,” Gu Yu stared at the bankbook in Hua Baoguo’s hand, wishing she could snatch it back immediately and hide it at the bottom of her own trunk. “This isn’t all his; most of what we’ve saved up over the years is in there.”
Xun Xingshun said, "Don't worry about that. Baoguo and the others won't covet your little bit of stuff. Besides, don't you know what our living conditions are like at home? How much money can you possibly save?"
Xun Liangtian also stared at the document in Hua Baoguo's hand, feeling very reluctant. Both of his sons were of marriageable age, and if they had this money, everything would be solved.
However, he quickly came to his senses and lowered his head to stare at the tips of his shoes. If he hadn't been discovered, he could have borrowed them, but that was impossible now.
As for what his mother said, that a large portion of the family's money was in there, he simply didn't believe it. He wasn't in charge of the household, but that didn't mean he couldn't count.
Besides, thanks to their in-laws' help, their lives are much better than others in the village; they can't afford to be greedy...
As for Xun Liangcai, he was shocked from beginning to end. He really didn't know his mother was so bold. Just thinking about how warmly Uncle Hua and the others treated him every time he went there made his face burn.
Xun Xingshun was fairly satisfied with his two sons' performance. It was fine for them to have their own little schemes, but they had to have boundaries.
Gu Yu's face turned pale, her heart raced, and she suddenly clutched her chest, closed her eyes, and fell backward.
Xun Liangcai was close to her and immediately stood up to help her, but he forgot that he was currently having a run of bad luck and was kicking on flat ground. He lost his balance and fell heavily onto Gu Yu.
The heavy thud made everyone instinctively shrink their necks, feeling a sharp pain.
Gu Yu, who was on the verge of fainting, cried out in pain, "It's broken, it's broken..."
Xun Liangcai was flustered and just as he was about to stand up, he lost his balance and fell heavily again, landing right on top of Gu Yu.
Hua Baoguo, who witnessed all of this from the side, gasped in shock. He felt as if he could really hear the sound of bones breaking.
