Seeing Xiao Qiang's anxious expression, I quickly and gently comforted her.
"Don't worry, I'll go check on them right away. They'll both be fine."
Xiao Qiang nodded: "Then you should be careful too."
Wang Ping, who was standing nearby, immediately looked at me when he saw me about to go into the woods.
"Sihai, I'll go with you. It'll be good if there are two of us to help each other out."
I nodded, and Wang Ping and I immediately grabbed our weapons and went down the mountain into the woods.
The woods were quiet now, and I had no way of knowing where Xu Wei and Liu Jiaojiao were.
I dared not make a sound, because I didn't know what environment Xu Wei and the other girl were in, or if there were any wild animals around them.
Many wild animals become more agitated when they make a loud noise. If that's the case, I will regret it for the rest of my life if Liu Jiaojiao and Xu Wei get hurt.
Wang Ping followed closely behind me, keeping a watchful eye on our surroundings. Fortunately, we didn't hear any screams even after we were quite a distance into the woods, which put my mind at ease.
Wang Ping tugged at me and carefully pointed to the woods on his left.
"I think there was a shadow flash by over there just now. Shall we go check it out?"
I nodded and carefully followed Wang Ping in the direction he had indicated.
But to our surprise, just as we took a step, a series of rustling sounds came from the branches of the trees above.
I was startled and immediately stopped. I looked carefully at the baby's head, but I couldn't find anything.
Wang Ping frowned as he looked at me: "I don't think Liu Jiaojiao and the others would climb trees even if they wanted to hide. The trees here don't even have a single extra branch. How could two girls possibly climb up there? Is there something up in the trees?"
I immediately thought of lynxes. I still feel lingering fear about the time Xiao Qiang and I fought a lynx in the woods.
If I hadn't single-handedly killed that lynx, Xiao Qiang and I would probably be either dead or seriously injured.
Liu Jiaojiao and Xu Wei are both delicate and frail; if they were to encounter a lynx, the consequences would be unimaginable.
"You wait here, I'll go in and take a look. If there's really danger inside, and we both go in, then we'll both perish inside."
When Wang Ping heard me say that, he immediately shook his head: "No, if we're going to die, we have to die together. Otherwise, if you die there alone, how am I supposed to explain it to Secretary Xiao when I get back?"
Seeing that Wang Ping couldn't be persuaded by me, I could only grit my teeth and say, "Then be careful, you're very tight."
Wang Ping nodded, and I immediately gripped the long-barreled shotgun and continued walking inside.
But with each step we took, we heard some noises coming from the trees, which made me feel very uneasy.
I wasn't sure what was up in the tree, and I didn't dare look up.
All sorts of unexpected things can happen in this forest, but I can't accept any of them.
Just after Wang Ping and I walked a few more steps inside, I suddenly saw a basket woven from vines.
I wove this basket back then, and Xu Wei wrapped it with many strips of cloth to prevent it from rubbing against our hands.
I recognized the basket at a glance, and Wang Ping behind me also noticed it, immediately tugging at me nervously.
"They should be around here, right?"
I stared quietly at the basket, not daring to move, and looked around, but I couldn't find Xu Wei or Liu Jiaojiao anywhere.
Just then, a loud commotion erupted from the trees above us, as if something was hiding in the trees, constantly watching us.
My heart clenched, and I could only hold my breath and remain vigilant.
My long-barreled shotgun is already loaded, so I can protect myself immediately if I encounter any danger.
But because Wang Ping was behind me, I had to ensure the safety of both of us.
I took two more steps forward and suddenly saw Liu Jiaojiao and Xu Wei hiding under a large rock.
Xu Wei and the others also saw me, and their eyes showed fear.
I waved to Xu Wei and was about to carefully walk towards him when another loud gunshot rang out from the woods.
I was startled and immediately came to my senses, looking in the direction from which the gunshot had come, raising my long-barreled shotgun in time.
It was only then that I noticed a dark shadow crouching on the tree trunk.
Before I could even see clearly, the black shadow had already leaped from one tree to another.
Meanwhile, Wang Ping took the opportunity to rush to Xu Wei and Liu Jiaojiao's side, and I quickly backed away to the big rock.
Xu Wei grabbed me immediately, her voice almost trembling.
"Brother Sihai, there's something in here! And he's holding a gun, he's been chasing me and Jiaojiao. We were so panicked that we were forced to come here."
She doesn't need to say that.
I had already seen it, but I wasn't sure what it was. But it was so small and huddled up in the tree, all furry, it was obviously an animal.
Liu Jiaojiao remained relatively calm, sniffing as she looked at the rest of us.
"That thing can shoot, but judging from its size, it shouldn't be a person. I suspect it might be a monkey?"
Hearing Liu Jiaojiao say that, I suddenly looked at this little girl with new respect.
When she lived with us, she rarely spoke, but worked very hard and was very kind.
This time, however, she felt much more relaxed being with Chen Jian.
Wang Ping listened to Liu Jiaojiao's words and nodded: "I think Liu Jiaojiao is right. Maybe it really is a monkey. What kind of animals have appeared in this forest? It's hard to say."
It wouldn't be surprising if there really was a monkey, but the problem is that this monkey has a gun.
We don't know if this thing fires indiscriminately or with a specific purpose.
If it's done with a specific purpose, then we're in a pretty bad situation.
I was well aware of Wang Ping's concerns.
But now, regardless of whether he has ulterior motives or not, I must capture this monkey and take the gun back from him, otherwise the gun will always be a hidden danger in his hands.
I can't accept the feeling of lying in bed sleeping while constantly having to be wary of the window, afraid that a dark gun barrel will suddenly appear and blow my head off.
Fortunately, he wasn't a person, which relieved us, and the whole thing turned out to be a false alarm.
