Chapter 300: Ice Fishing at the Start

We originally thought there might still be water flowing in this freshwater stream, but to our surprise, when Chen Jian and I arrived at this body of water, we found that it had already been covered with thick ice. It seems that the temperature here is much colder than we imagined.

Chen Jian, also wearing a wolf skin, walked along the road with his neck hunched and his teeth bared.

"Brother Hai, it's so cold! If we two can't find any fish, won't we freeze to death here?"

I rolled my eyes at Chen Jian: "How can you be so spineless? Your sister-in-law wants to drink fish soup, so I can't just not come, can I? Besides, Liu Jiaojiao is still breastfeeding her baby and needs to supplement her nutrition. There's no fruit available now, so drinking some fish soup isn't unreasonable. Why are you talking so much nonsense?"

Chen Jian is a doting father to his daughter, and he has always been good to Liu Jiaojiao. He nodded when he heard me say that.

"Yeah, it's already pitiful enough that there's no fruit, so drinking some fish soup isn't too much to ask. But how are we going to catch them? This ice is so thick, do you think the fish will jump out if we break it?"

To be honest, I have no fishing experience, especially not in winter.

But I had already confidently assured Wang Xiaoxiao that it would be quite embarrassing to go back empty-handed.

Moreover, this time the two of us brought all the tools we could muster; there's always a way to overcome difficulties.

"When we come back with this stick and the rope, didn't we also bring two wires? And the shellfish meat we got in the camp, use a knife to cut it into small strips and hang it on the wire. Although the wire isn't as good as a fishhook, I think it should still be useful. If we still can't catch any fish, then the two of us can weave some vine nets here in the county town and then break the ice. These fish are lacking oxygen down there, I think that should make them easier to catch."

Upon hearing my words, Chen Jian immediately broke out in a sweat: "Brother Sihai, don't tell me you don't know either."

I was a little embarrassed, but I still kicked him: "Stop talking nonsense and get to work."

Chen Jian then hunched his neck and carefully picked up a large rock from the side, smashing a hole in the thick ice.

Water floated on the surface, and there was even a faint mist. The sky was getting darker and darker. Chen Jian and I lit a few bonfires around us. After the bonfires lit up, the temperature around us began to rise, and Chen Jian and I were no longer as cold as we had been at the beginning.

We carefully cut all the shellfish meat into small pieces, and then sharpened the wire on a stone before hanging it on the rope.

He then placed two pieces of shellfish meat at the tip of the wire, and then cast them into the small hole like a fishing rod.

Nobody knows if this will actually catch any fish, but we have to try anyway, because I really want Wang Xiaoxiao to get what she wants.

To our surprise, Chen Jian and I sat there dumbfounded for over an hour, but the wooden pole didn't react. Chen Jian was getting hungry, so he put the pot of soup that Xiao Qiang had given us on the fire. The soup's delicious aroma quickly filled the air after it was heated. Chen Jian went to the side, grabbed a wooden fork, whittled it into a wooden spoon with a knife, scooped up a mouthful, drank it, and sighed.

"Sigh, actually, if there weren't those dangers here, living on this deserted island would be quite nice. There would be no backstabbing and scheming like in the city, and no worries about daily necessities. It would be quite comfortable here."

Actually, I agree with Chen Jian's sentiments, but staying on this deserted island isn't a solution. After all, we have our loved ones in the city, and I can't just keep living here in fear with these women. If we really have the chance, we'll have to go back.

After sitting for another half hour, Chen Jian and I finished the whole pot of soup.

Fortunately, the water from this freshwater stream was drinkable. Chen Jian went to the side and smashed another hole, cleaned the soup pot, and boiled another pot of water.

But the fishing rod couldn't catch anything. It was getting late, and I was really worried about not being able to go back soon. After all, ever since we arrived on this deserted island, every time we went out, it was with a large group of people.

There's a campfire here, and its light is very conspicuous. If there are any ill-intentioned indigenous people or Xiao He and his group in the woods, things will only get more complicated.

"No, we can't keep going like this. It's like Jiang Taigong fishing, only those who are willing will take the bait. I think we should think of another way."

Chen Jian hunched his shoulders, feeling drowsy after drinking his fill of soup.

Hearing this, he immediately frowned and said, "Brother Sihai, if it doesn't work, let's try again tomorrow. Why do we have to catch fish tonight? Besides, your wife won't miss one more night, will she?"

I glared at him and said, "What? We've already promised them, are we going to let them get their hopes up for nothing? Get up, stop slacking off. I see there are a lot of thin vines over there. Pick some that are more resilient and we'll weave a few fish baskets together."

Chen Jian, though being bossed around by me, still had no choice but to get up and run to the tree. He kept muttering to himself, "It's so late at night, and I'm not only coming here to get chilled, but I'm also messing around here. I can't stand it."

I was just about to tell Chen Jian to shut up and stop talking nonsense when the wooden trunk, which had been completely still, suddenly trembled. Although the surrounding light wasn't very bright, I still noticed the tremor.

My heart leaped with joy. Could it be that a fish had actually taken the bait?

He quickly reached out and pulled on the wooden pole, and sure enough, he felt something. The rope tied to the base of the pole was taut. If nothing went wrong, he was sure to catch a big fish.

But I don't dare to reel in the line right away, because this rod is nothing compared to a fishing rod. Plus, I'm not sure if the thin rope at the bottom is strong enough. Most importantly, I'm even more unsure whether the wire hook can actually hit the target on the first strike.

So we had to carefully reel in the rod.

Chen Jian was still muttering to himself, but I didn't have time to pay attention to him. After retracting the pole halfway, I suddenly lifted it and saw a long white thing hanging on it. I flung my hand away in surprise, and the thing fell directly onto the snow.

Startled, Chen Jian let out a scream, but then he excitedly shouted, "Brother Sihai is a big fish!"
