Chapter 177 Watching the Show

The wolves seemed to have a well-organized division of labor, each one eyeing the already battered brown bear with fierce glints in their eyes.

Chen Jian leaned close to me, watching the situation down the mountain, and gritted his teeth: "Brother Sihai, I'm afraid this brown bear can't beat these wolves, right?"

Wang Ping nodded in agreement: "Two fists can't fight four palms, let alone there are probably more than a dozen wolves inside. This brown bear probably won't survive today. But I think it's better if we ignore them. If we anger these beasts and they rush up the mountain, we'll be in big trouble."

I nodded: "Wang Ping is right. Let's observe the situation first. If they really fight to the death, we can get such good hides and meat without losing a single soldier. Isn't Chen Jian still clamoring for smoked meat? In a bit, you go down and subdue that brown bear, then kill it. I'll kill it for you and then get you some jars to marinate, okay?"

Chen Jian looked at me and curled his lip: "Brother Sihai, don't joke with me. That brown bear's paws are so big. If I go down there, I'm afraid he'll kill me with one swipe. Besides, he's got a lot of wolves with him. I don't dare to go."

Wang Ping quickly patted my shoulder and whispered that he would go and tell everyone on the mountaintop to return to their houses to avoid making any noise that might attract the attention of the wild animals below.

I nodded and let Wang Ping make the arrangements, while Chen Jian and I kept our guns drawn, watching the group of wild beasts down the mountain with predatory eyes.

That brown bear was very brave; despite being surrounded by so many wolves, it remained calm and composed.

A gray wolf attacked him from behind, but the brown bear reacted with exceptional speed, slapping the wolf to the ground with a single paw.

The gray wolf let out a mournful howl, then limped away to the other side.

Unfortunately, there were simply too many wolves, and they coordinated extremely well. After one wolf was injured and ran to the other side, the remaining wolf quickly surrounded it.

At first, the brown bear could fight them for a while, but gradually, he became exhausted. Then, another wolf with white fur on its forehead saw the brown bear baring its long teeth and immediately pounced on the brown bear's face.

What he did was extremely dangerous. After all, brown bears are incredibly strong. Although this wolf was also very brave, if the brown bear were to strike him with its paw, he would be either killed or seriously injured.

But to everyone's surprise, the wolf pounced straight at the brown bear's face. The brown bear seemed to have not expected the wolf to be so impatient and did not react in time. It was knocked back by the wolf's attack. Then, the surrounding pack of wolves rushed forward and began to tear at its legs and neck.

The brown bear tried to struggle again, but it was already exhausted. Soon I smelled a faint smell of blood.

Chen Jian frowned and said, "These things are really too fierce. I think this brown bear is doomed. If the two of us don't act soon, we'll be devoured by these wolves. And look, only these two wolves are injured. If we don't drive these wolves away quickly, we'll be left with nothing."

I knew Chen Jian was anxious, but in the current situation, with just the two of us and one gun each, even if we attracted the attention of the wolves, what chance did we have of winning?

"Let's wait a little longer. I think this brown bear should still have a chance to struggle a bit more."

No sooner had I spoken than the brown bear rose from the ground once more, grabbed a wolf, and bit down on its neck. Blood splattered almost instantly, and the wolf's head fell to the ground, rolling away with a gurgling sound.

The wolves, who were originally very brave, all took a few steps back when they saw this scene.

Chen Jian whispered, "Oh my, you were right. I think these wolves are scared. So, this brown bear shouldn't die, right?"

"It's not over yet, who can say for sure? You just need to lie here and watch carefully."

We continued to observe for another half hour, during which the brown bear's constant struggles were not a sign of resignation.

After all, if he were to give up now, he would surely die.

The wolves, initially agitated, gradually calmed down. They spread out and surrounded the brown bear, but stopped attacking, seemingly waiting for something.

The brown bear dared not make any rash moves, carefully observing the surrounding movements, and occasionally letting out a roar to scare the wolves.

The stalemate lasted for more than half an hour when the wolf that had grown white fur suddenly let out a low growl, followed by the two wolves behind the brown bear launching a swift attack.

But the brown bear had already come to its senses by now. Hearing the commotion, it quickly turned around. In that instant, the white-furred wolf behind it bared its teeth and jumped. Then, all the other wolves swarmed forward again and knocked the brown bear to the ground.

I think this brown bear is beyond saving this time.

Sure enough, after the brown bear was pounced on and bitten by the wolves for a while, it stopped moving.

Chen Jian gritted his teeth and said, "Hey, Sihai, how much longer are we going to wait? If we keep waiting like this, all these hides will be wasted."

I nodded: "The time should be ripe now. It seems that the white-furred wolf is the leader of this pack. If we can kill him, the pack will be leaderless and they will panic. You hide, and I'll see if I can kill him!"

I immediately pulled out my gun and took aim.

Fortunately, we have a high vantage point, which is ideal for sniping. The guns we got from those foreigners this time are all new models, and their accuracy is much better than the ones we found on the ghost ship.

I loaded the bullet, lay there carefully watching the pack of wolves, and then pulled the trigger.

The white-furred wolf was standing on the brown bear, swaggering and tearing at its flesh.

I was able to fire a single shot, hitting him squarely in the brain and heart. The wolf didn't even have time to struggle before blood splattered everywhere and he collapsed to the ground.

At the same time, the wolf pack collapsed instantly. They howled and scattered far away, then stood still, looking around in terror.

I immediately grabbed Chen Jian and we lay down on the mountaintop, not daring to move or even breathe.

Another half hour passed, and just as Chen Jian and I looked up, intending to see what the situation was like down the mountain.

Suddenly, Chen Jian exclaimed "Ouch!" I looked up and saw that the pack of wolves was standing down the mountain, and all of them were looking at us!
