Chapter 20

The country road was silent except for the sound of pebbles being stepped on by foot.

He Xianqiu was on Ji Chenzhou's back, looking at the scenery along the way. The path was only about one meter wide, surrounded by dense grass and short trees.

After walking for about a few minutes, He Xianqiu saw the educated youth point in the distance. She signaled Ji Chenzhou to put her down, and she walked the remaining few hundred meters by herself.

Ji Chenzhou put her down and asked her worriedly, "Are you sure you can walk by yourself?"

He Xianqiu hesitated for a few seconds, took a few steps, then turned back and said confidently: "Okay, Xiaoji, wait for me here for a while."

Ji Chenzhou nodded, then watched He Xianqiu limping towards the educated youth point.

He Xianqiu walked from the back of the educated youth site to the gate, then stopped to rest for a few seconds, and then limped into the dormitory.

There was no one in the dormitory, and no one knew where the other educated youth had gone. He Xianqiu changed his clothes, took out two bags of White Rabbit candies from the box, wrapped them in a cloth bag, and then left the educated youth site.

After walking a few hundred meters, she saw Ji Chenzhou and waved her hand, her eyes smiling into crescents.

Ji Chenzhou saw her and walked over quickly, then said to He Xianqiu: "You must be tired after walking for a while. The old man said you can't walk for a long time."

As he spoke, Ji Chenzhou bent down and motioned He Xianqiu to come up.

He Xianqiu was indeed a little tired after walking for a while. It was indeed a bit troublesome to drag one foot while walking, and her injured foot was a little sore.

Then she lay on Ji Chenzhou's back without any hesitation and smiled: "Okay."

Ji Chenzhou raised the corner of his mouth and then stood up carefully.

He Xianqiu lay on Ji Chenzhou's back, feeling the other's thick and warm back.

Some distance away from Grandpa Zhong's house, He Xianqiu hummed a song out of boredom. Her voice was clear, pleasant and melodious.

Then He Xianqiu remembered that she had taken a bag of White Rabbit candies, so she opened a little hole, took out a candy and opened it, then said to Ji Chenzhou with a smile: "Student Ji, I took some White Rabbit candies, but you don't have hands now, so I'll open it for you and you can eat it when you open your mouth."

As he spoke, He Xianqiu handed the candy to Ji Chenzhou's mouth. Ji Chenzhou paused for a few seconds, opened his mouth, and gently bit the candy.

White Rabbit Milk Candy is very sweet, with a thick milky flavor.

Ji Chenzhou had never eaten White Rabbit milk candy. He had only seen his mother secretly giving the candy to his brothers and sisters. When he saw it, her mother scolded him to get out. When he grew up and had some money, he was reluctant to use it to buy the White Rabbit candy that he had always wanted to eat as a child. He just wanted to save the money and escape from this home as soon as possible.

With a smile in his eyes, he said to He Xianqiu tenderly, "Thank you, He Zhiqing."

He Xianqiu smiled and said, "You're welcome."

After that, the two of them didn't talk. He Xianqiu continued to hum the song, while Ji Chenzhou ate candy and listened to the unknown song hummed by the other party. He narrowed his eyes and thought to himself that He Zhiqing's humming was really beautiful.

The two didn't speak, but the atmosphere was very warm.

He Xianqiu hummed all the way to Grandpa Zhong's house. He smelled the fragrance of chicken at the door. He Xianqiu's eyes lit up. Is this stir-fried chicken?

Mr. Zhong looked up and saw the two people standing at the door and said, "The chicken soup tastes too bland and it doesn't taste good, so I killed the chicken and made stir-fried chicken."

He Xianqiu nodded and said, "Grandpa Zhong, the chicken you fried is really delicious."

Mr. Zhong said proudly: "That's right. After all, you have cooked for my wife for decades."

Then he said sadly: "I don't know how the old woman is doing now."

It has been almost eight years since she was framed by her colleagues and was afraid that her family would be implicated, so he divorced her, severed the father-son relationship, and was sent to the countryside.

He Xianqiu was silent. As a person sent to the countryside for forced labor, he was spat at by villagers and even tortured to death.

He Xianqiu didn't know how to comfort Mr. Zhong, and nothing he said could make Mr. Zhong stop being sad.

Mr. Zhong calmed himself down, then said to He Xianqiu and Ji Chenzhou, "Okay, let's eat."

After the oldest man, Mr. Zhong, started eating, He Xianqiu and Ji Chenzhou started eating.

When He Xianqiu put the chicken into his mouth, his eyes lit up. The chicken was tender and delicious, with juice in the meat, fresh and tasty.

She curled her eyes in satisfaction and praised, "Grandpa Zhong, your cooking is so delicious."

Ji Chenzhou nodded: "The old man really cooks very well."

Mr. Zhong smiled and said, "If you like it, eat more."

He Xianqiu nodded and picked up his chopsticks: "Okay."

The three of them sat together and had a great time.

After they were full, He Xianqiu had to clean up the dishes. She felt embarrassed for not doing anything and just eating and drinking.

Ji Chenzhou stopped her: "I'll do it."

"Just let Xiao Ji come, let's take a rest," said Mr. Zhong.

Seeing her lame condition, He Xianqiu could only nod his head. What if she went there and only caused more trouble?

Afterwards, Ji Chenzhou cleaned up the dishes and went to wash them, leaving only He Xianqiu and Old Man Zhong in the room.

Mr. Zhong asked, "How did you and Xiao Ji know each other?"

He Xianqiu thought for a moment and said, "One time when I went to the commune, I asked him to help me carry the pot, and then it was cooked."

Mr. Zhong was very surprised when he heard this. Ji Chenzhou would help a girl carry things? Although this boy has a good heart, he is not the kind of person who would help others carry things.

But Mr. Zhong just thought secretly, and praised Ji Chenzhou on the surface: "Little Ji is really a good kid. Before I met him, I couldn't even eat meat in the brigade. I could only eat wild vegetables and cultivated vegetables, which made my mouth taste so bland."

"Xiao Ji is really good. He helped me a lot," said He Xianqiu.

Ji Chenzhou is really a good person. It’s really wrong to think that she was afraid of him and almost distanced herself from him because she knew he was a villain.

But fortunately she didn't do that, otherwise she would have lost a good friend like Xiao Ji.

After getting along with each other, He Xianqiu has regarded Ji Chenzhou as her friend. She hopes that he can also get rid of the plot and live a happy life.

After that, the two chatted about some other topics. He Xianqiu listened to Mr. Zhong talking about the past with great interest.

Mr. Zhong's family was sent abroad to study, and he was promoted from an intern to the dean. He is a doctor who combines Chinese and Western medicine, and knows both herbal remedies and Western medicine. He was framed in the hospital and under pressure from his superiors, but he fought hard to the end and slapped the faces of those who looked down on him.

He Xianqiu listened attentively. Seeing that she was listening with great interest, Mr. Zhong became more and more excited as well. He was quite happy that someone liked to listen to his story. When he told Ji Chenzhou about it before, the other party would listen but was very perfunctory.

He was nothing like He Xianqiu, who listened attentively and looked at him with admiration and worship.

After a while, when Ji Chenzhou came back from washing the dishes, he heard Mr. Zhong talking to He Xianqiu about his past.

Ji Chenzhou had heard the old man say this several times and had memorized everything he said. As long as he got excited, he would talk nonstop.

However, since Mr. Zhong was talking excitedly, Ji Chenzhou did not disturb him and just listened quietly beside him.

He Xianqiu was indeed very interested in things in the past, so she listened to Grandpa Zhong very carefully. She used to love listening to her grandmother talk about things in the past, and was very curious about the 1970s and 1980s.

However, he never expected that He Xianqiu would travel into the same generation and become a member of the seventies.

After Mr. Zhong finished speaking, He Xianqiu looked at the time. Since it was already five o'clock, she had to go back to the educated youth point.

She took the White Rabbit milk candies out of the bag, gave the unopened pack to Mr. Zhong, and handed the remaining pack to Ji Chenzhou.

She smiled and said, "I have a lot of candies in my dormitory. I can't even finish them all, so I brought them over for you. As the saying goes, seven White Rabbit candies are equal to a cup of milk, so candies are pretty good."

Mr. Zhong looked at the big bag of White Rabbit candy and declined: "You can keep it. I am too old to need it."

"Yes, you keep it and don't give it to me." Ji Chenzhou put the White Rabbit milk candy back into He Xianqiu's hand.

He Xianqiu put the candy back in his hand, then took a step back and said to the two of them, "I still have a lot of candies, I can't even finish them all, just take them."

He Xianqiu refused to take it. There was no reason for her to take back what she had given away.

The two of them looked at her determined attitude and could only accept it helplessly.

Seeing that it was getting late, He Xianqiu said, "It's past five o'clock. I'll go back to the educated youth camp first. I'll come to Grandpa Zhong's place next time."

When Ji Chenzhou heard this, he quickly said, "Let me carry you back through the small path."

Mr. Zhong nodded and said, "Let's go back. There are no lights in the countryside at night. We can still see the road if we go back now."

Afterwards, He Xianqiu and Ji Chenzhou said goodbye to Mr. Zhong and left.

He Xianqiu was still carried on Ji Chenzhou's back. She said to Ji Chenzhou, "Thank you, little Ji."

She was really embarrassed. Ji Chenzhou had been carrying her around all day.

Ji Chenzhou shook his head and said softly, "No need."

On the country road, only He Xianqiu and Ji Chenzhou were exceptionally quiet, but with Ji Chenzhou around, He Xianqiu felt particularly at ease.

Soon, they arrived at the educated youth point, and He Xianqiu heard the laughter and joy coming from the educated youth point.

Ji Chenzhou put her down, then took out the bubble from his waist pocket and gave it to her.

He Xianqiu took some prickly ash and put it into the cloth bag, then waved to Ji Chenzhou: "See you next time, little Ji, it's fun to be with you."

Ji Chenzhou raised the corner of his mouth and responded: "See you next time."

Afterwards, He Xianqiu nodded, turned and walked towards the educated youth point.

Ji Chenzhou looked at He Xianqiu's back and realized that he could no longer see him. Then he turned around and went home through the small path.

He Xianqiu returned to the educated youth camp. Other educated youth saw her and said a few words to her. When they saw her limping, they asked, "What happened to you?"

He Xianqiu explained: "I went to the village for a stroll and fell down."

She could only lie and say that she fell in the village, and she didn't dare to tell the truth that she fell while going up the mountain.

After all, someone has to accompany you when going up the mountain. Otherwise, it would be strange for her to go up the mountain alone when she is unfamiliar with the place.

In order to avoid unnecessary trouble, He Xianqiu decided not to tell the truth.
