Chapter 59: Purchasing Furniture and Exchanging Things

The car was driving on a flat dirt road. The trees planted on both sides were of different heights. They were completely wild and there was no trace of human interference.

The road scenery is not as good as that of later generations, but it has a wild beauty.

This is how plants should be, allowed to grow freely in an unconstrained environment, rather than being cut into uniform shapes.

The same is true for people.

"Let's find some wild fruit trees and plant them at home so we can enjoy the coolness in the summer."

Like a big tree that provides shade at home.

"Okay, let's go up the mountain to look for it this afternoon."

Uncle Niu lives at the end of the village. As soon as the jeep drove into the village, it attracted the attention of adults and children.

The adults looked at the familiar jeep and knew that it was someone coming from the nearby housing estate. They usually walked here, but today they changed their means of transportation and looked around curiously.

The children chased after the jeep until it stopped.

Lin Jingshu got out of the car and saw them hiding behind the tree, and waved at them with a smile.

A few brave children ran over, stopped one meter away from her, and looked at her curiously.

"Hello."

Lin Jingshu half-knelt down and greeted them, "Do you know if anyone has eggs or vegetable seeds? I'd like to exchange some."

The bare yard at home was cleaned up by the two of them while Gu Chengze was at home and they planted some vegetables. Just buying vegetables from the supply and marketing cooperative was not a long-term solution. Such a big yard had to be put to use.

"I have one at home."

"I have one at home, too."

Whenever someone came to exchange something, the food at home would get better, and the children would raise their hands happily and rush to show off in front of her.

"My family is the best in the village. Theirs are not as good as mine."

"You're talking nonsense. My family's the best."

Seeing the children about to quarrel, Lin Jingshu quickly stopped them and gave them a gentle look, "How about this, everyone go home and bring five eggs. I'll see if they look good, and then we can exchange them. Is that okay?"

"good."

The children agreed readily and ran home one by one without waiting for Lin Jingshu to speak.

Lin Jingshu looked at their backs and shouted, "Run slower, I'm not in a hurry."

The children disappeared in the blink of an eye, and it was not known whether they heard her words.

Uncle Niu heard the noise and came out. Seeing Gu Chengze and his wife coming, he quickly invited them in.

"Uncle Niu, we want to ask you to make some more odd pieces of furniture."

Gu Chengze explained his purpose.

"Okay, okay. Just tell me what you want. I can't guarantee anything else, but I'm fine with carpentry."

Uncle Niu patted his chest to reassure them.

Lin Jingshu told Uncle Niu a few things she wanted to make.

Uncle Niu nodded after hearing this and said, "Big items like desks and bookshelves can be completed in about three days. Small items like low stools are easier to make."

"Do you have anything ready to take away?"

Since I drove here, I can't go back empty-handed. Besides, I might need the bench when entertaining guests at home, so I'd better take away whatever I can.

"Yes, but the tung oil hasn't dried yet. It will take at least two hours."

"It's okay, we'll wait."

Uncle Niu asked his wife to pour a pot of cold tea for the guests to heat up while he took the time to get busy.

People in the family compound often come to him to ask him to make things. There are not many people as polite and generous as Gu Chengze, so he has to work hard to retain this "big customer".

Uncle Niu was too busy to chat with them, so Aunt Niu sat aside and acted as a diplomat.

Aunt Niu was a kind person, with eyes that curved when she smiled. She told Lin Jingshu about the acquaintance between Gu Chengze and Uncle Niu.

"At that time, my old man went up the mountain to look for suitable wood. He happened to be caught in a rainstorm and fell off the cliff. Fortunately, Comrade Gu passed by and brought people to bring him back. Otherwise, his old bones would have died there."

"You're welcome, Auntie. This is what I should do."

Aunt Niu smiled and shook her head. Although she said that, when the danger really comes, others may not lend a helping hand.

In this age of self-preservation, people are afraid of being blackmailed and having no place to cry. Gu Chengze did not hesitate to lend a helping hand, and the old man survived. The doctor said that if he had gone half an hour later, he would not have been able to be saved.

Therefore, they were extremely grateful to Gu Chengze. Last time, he asked someone to make furniture for them and he agreed not to charge any money. The other party agreed very well, but when the person left and they were packing up, they saw some money left under the bowl.

Aunt Niu pulled Lin Jingshu over and praised her. Even though Gu Chengze usually had a stern face, he couldn't help blushing.

"Beautiful sister, here I come!"

Lin Jingshu heard the sound and went out to see a little girl sweating profusely while holding a basket in her hands, looking at her with bright eyes.

After Xiaoyu ran back home, she hurried out holding the eggs. Her parents, who were unaware of the situation, thought she was playing around with the eggs and chased after her.

"Mom, I'm going to exchange things with someone."

Xiaoyu's mother stopped walking when she cried out. She scratched her head and muttered in surprise, "Why did you just exchange the things and run away like a thief?"

Xiaoyu ran the fastest. The other children were either a step slower or were found by their parents by twisting their ears.

"Mom, what I said is true. How come you don't even believe your own son?"

Tiedan said with a grin.

Tiedan's mother twisted his ear and said, "How come I didn't know someone was here to exchange things? Were you cheated by the peddler?"

Tiedan was so angry that he puffed up his cheeks and didn't say a word. His mother was busy weaving mats at home and didn't even leave the house. How could she know that someone came to exchange things?

"Tiedan, you're late. The beautiful sister has already chosen my eggs."
