Chapter 73 Incorrigible

At the hospital.

Gu Laoda and Gu Laoer wanted to take care of Gu Dashan in place of Yang Dongmei and Jiang Jinxiu so that the two women could go back and rest, but they refused.

They could have gone home at night and come to the hospital during the day.

However, Yang Dongmei complained that it was too much of a hassle.

Besides, going back and forth would be a waste of time, and she just wanted to spend more time with her man.

She wanted to spend a few more days with her husband before going back.

After all, for the past ten years, she has been busy taking care of the children and has not been able to spend much time with him. The nurses at the hospital have been helping to look after him.

Now that the children have all grown up and started their own families, only the youngest, Gu Xilan, is still in school, so she doesn't have as many worries anymore.

Jiang Jinxiu, however, could not go back; her plans were not yet complete.

If she goes back, then she can no longer give Gu Dashan the spiritual spring water.

She didn't believe what she was seeing today was an illusion.

She preferred to believe that Gu Dashan was truly conscious and that it was only a matter of time before he woke up.

His sacred spring water is useful.

After school in the afternoon, Gu Xilan's first priority was to play with Xiao Hei.

Since Xiao Hei came to the Gu family, Gu Xilan has enjoyed playing with it for a while every day. Before, Chengzi would also play with it.

After Chengzi left with Jiang Jinxiu, Gu Xilan preferred to stick close to Xiao Hei.

Every time I come home from school, the first thing I do is take Xiao Hei out for a walk.

But when she got home from school today, she looked everywhere for Xiao Hei but couldn't find him.

Seeing that only her sister-in-law was home, she asked, "Sister-in-law, have you seen Xiao Hei today?"

Upon hearing this, Yang Zhaodi's face paled. She recalled the events of the day; after her brother Yang Wei and the others left, she hadn't seen Xiao Hei again. Could it be…

She dared not think any further.

"I guess... I guess he went up the mountain and didn't come back," Yang Zhaodi stammered in reply.

Gu Xilan didn't pay much attention to it.

Sometimes Xiao Hei goes hunting in the mountains and comes back late, so she just waits for him.

But to her surprise, she waited until dark, and even after her older brothers returned, Xiao Hei still hadn't come back.

She grew anxious: "Big brother, second brother, Xiao Hei hasn't come back yet. Could something have happened to him? Shall we go out and look for him?"

Over time, they had come to regard Xiao Hei as part of the family. Although Xiao Hei was nominally from the third son's family, it didn't stop them from liking it.

The group of people who had just stepped into the house were about to go out again.

"Ah Liang, where are you all going?" Yang Zhaodi called out to the group from inside the house.

Gu Xiliang looked at her and said, "Let's go find Xiao Hei."

"No need to go looking for it, doesn't Xiao Hei always come back on its own?" Yang Zhaodi said calmly, but her hands kept rubbing together to hide her inner unease.

“We’re worried about it not coming back so late. You stay home and watch over Pearl and the others. We’ll go look for it.” With that, she turned and left, not paying much attention to Yang Zhaodi’s expression.

Gu Lao Er also told Sun Xiaomeng to stay home and take care of Fangfang, not to let her go with them, since Fangfang was already tired and had fallen asleep, and needed someone to watch over her.

Gu Xilan walked beside her older brother and asked, "Brother, have you noticed that sister-in-law is acting strangely today?"

Old Master Gu chuckled sheepishly and patted her head: "What's so strange about it? She's still your sister-in-law."

Gu Laoda is a rough and unrefined man; he rarely pays attention to details.

"Oh dear, you're touching my head again. It's all your fault I'm not growing taller." Gu Xilan completely forgot her strange feelings after being teased by Gu Laoda.

"I'm not going with you, I'm going with my second brother." With that, she jogged and caught up with Gu Lao Er.

Gu Lao Er and Gu Xi Lan were in one group, while Gu Lao Da was in another group. They split up to find Xiao Hei.

The group searched and called out the little black dog's name, but there was no response.

Gu Xiliang, who was having dinner at home not far away, heard the shouts and came out to help look for Xiao Hei.

They searched for a long time but couldn't find it.

Gu Xilan wanted to go home to see if Xiao Hei had gone home first.

But before she even got into her house, someone called out to her.

It was Aunt Yu, who lived not far from their home.

"Xiao Lan, what are you looking for? The whole village can hear your voices," Aunt Yu asked curiously.

"Aunt Yu, have you seen the black dog that's looking for my third sister-in-law?"

“I didn’t see any, but I had a stomachache on my way to work today and took a day off. When I came back, I saw a lot of people at your house. I heard dogs barking at that time, but then I didn’t hear anything. Your sister-in-law seems to know those people. You can ask your sister-in-law.”

"Thank you, Aunt Yu. I'll go ask." Gu Xilan thanked her and then turned to go inside to find her sister-in-law.

She found it strange; they had guests over today, but her sister-in-law hadn't mentioned it.

Isn't she usually quite talkative?

Although the family has separated, they still live under the same roof, so they know everything that happens to them.

"Sister-in-law, are we having guests over today?"

"No, why are you suddenly asking this?" Yang Zhaodi quickly denied.

Gu Xilan stared at her intently: "Then, sister-in-law, when was the last time you saw Xiao Hei today?"

Before Yang Zhaodi could say anything, Gu Laoda returned and asked, "Honey, did anyone come to our house today?"

"No, I went out after you left, I wasn't home," Yang Zhaodi replied guiltily, avoiding looking at Gu Xiliang.

Gu Xilan, watching from the side, increasingly felt that her sister-in-law was hiding something.
